APPLICATION FILED 00T. 2s, 190s.
FREDERICK A. STAHL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SYRINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. *7, 1909.
Application led October 23, 1908. Serial No. 459,114.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. STAI-1L, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to syringes and particularly to a piston head and valve for a syringe having a tubular piston rod provided with an inlet at its upper end to receive a liquid and an outlet at the lower end to discharge the liquid into the piston barrel, from which it is discharged through the combined inlet and outlet thereof.
It has for its object to provide a piston head and valve for a syringe of this character adapting it to also receive a liquid directly into its barrel and discharge it therefrom through the combined inlet and outlet thereof, and means adapting its piston rod to slide easily and preventing it from swelling.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side View of the syringe. Fig. 2 a longitudinal, vertical, sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 a fragmentary vertical sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the piston rod and piston head and valve thereon. Fig. 4 an edge view, on an enlarged scale of the piston head and valve of the piston rod, and Fig. 5 a central vertical sectional view, on the same scale as Fig. 4, of the piston head and valve of the piston rod.
In all the flgures of the drawings illustrating my invention, like reference characters designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the tubular piston rod barrel, which is open at its upper end and provided at its lower end with a reduced portion forming a neck 2 and having a combined inlet and outlet 3 communicating with the interior of the piston rod barrel and a flange 4. A nozzle 5, of rubber or other elastic material, is removably secured on the lower end of the piston rod barrel, said nozzle having a centrally located circular cavity 6 receiving the flange 4, a centrally located circular hole 7, of less diameter than the cavity 6, communicating therewith from the top of the nozzle and receiving the neck 2, and a centrally located combined inlet and outlet 8 communicating with the cavity 6 from the bottom of the nozzle. A stopper 9 is removably located in the combined inlet and outlet 8 of the nozzle and provides means for controlling it and also controlling the combined inlet and outlet 3 of the piston rod barrel. The tubular piston rod 1() is reciprocally located in the piston rod barrel, the upper end of said piston rod being open and extending out of the upper end of the piston rod barrel, thereby affording an opportunity for grasping it between the fingers and a cap 11 having an air hole, is screwed thereon and the lower end of said piston rod is provided with a reduced portion forming a neck 12 and having an outlet 13 and a flange 14. A piston head 15, of rubber or other elastic material is removably secured on the lower end of the piston rod, said piston head having a centrally located circular cavity 16, receiving the flange 14, and a centrally located hole 17 intersecting the cavity 16 from the top of the piston head, the upper port-ion of said hole receiving the neck 12 and the lower portion thereof registering with the outlet 13 and being controlled by an integral flap valve 18 normally closing it, said valve being formed by slitting the piston head so as to intersect the lower portion of the hole 17.
rIhe working surface of the piston head is covered with cloth 20 or other suitable nonelastic material, providing a smooth surface be employed for forming the piston heathand then inserting the rubber into the mold in a partially compressed state and fully compressing it, thus practically making the cloth an integral part of the piston head.
For sanitary reasons, the piston rod and its-barrel are preferably made of glass, but may be made of hard rubber or any other suitable material desired. p
The operation is as follows: The parts of the syringe being in the position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, the cap 11 of the piston rod is removed and after liquid has been poured into the piston rod the cap is replaced, the piston rod is pulled upwardly and the suction created thereby in the lower end of the piston rod barrel opens the valve 18 allowing liquid to pass from said piston rod into the piston rod barrel, the amount of liquid passing into the piston rod barrel depending upon the distance the piston rod is drawn upwardly, the stopper 9 is then removed and the piston rod pressed downwardly, which has the eliect of closing the valve 18 and forcing the liquid out of the piston rod barrel.
Assuming the part-s of the syringe to be in the position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawings, if it is desired to draw liquid directly into and discharge it from the piston rod barrel, the stopper 9 is removed and the nozzle is inserted into liquid, the piston rod is then pulled upwardly and the suction created thereby in the lower end of the piston rod barrel 1 draws liquid therein, and to discharge the liquid the piston rod is pushed down again.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details and arrangement of parts shown and described, but reserve the right to all modifications within the scope of my invention.
I/Vhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a syringe having a tubular barrel open at one end and provided with a combined inlet and outlet at the other end and a tubular piston rod in said barrel provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end, of a piston head of elastic material on the outlet endv` of said piston rod bearing against the pistonv rod barrel and serving as a packing, said piston head being provided with a valve controlling the outlet of the piston rod, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a syringe having a tubular barrel open at one end and provided with a combined inletv and outlet at the other end and a tubular piston rod in said barrel provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end, of a head of elastic material on the outlet end of said piston rod having a valve integral therewith controlling said piston rod outlet, substantially as described.
3. A piston head of elastic material for hollow piston rods of barrel syringes adapted to be placed over and surround the outlet end of the piston rod and bear against the piston rod barrel and serve as a packing, said piston head being provided with a valve controlling the outlet of the piston rod, substantially as described.
4. A piston head of elastic material, for hollow piston rods of syringes, adapted to be placed over the piston rod outlet and having a valve integral therewith controlling said piston rod outlet, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a syringe having a tubular barrel open at one end and provided with a combined inlet and outlet at theother end, a stopper for said combined inlet and outlet, and a tubular piston rod in said barrel provided with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end, of a piston head of elastic material on the outlet end of said piston rod having a valve integral therewith controlling said piston rod loutlet, substantially as described.
lIn testimony whereof I have signed my name m the presence of two subscribing Wltnesses.
FREDERICK A. STAHL.
