JOHN Gf. NOREN, VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
BAG.
` Specification of ietters'latent.
Patentedsept. '7, 1909.
Application filed September 14, 1908. Serial No. 453,016.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Gr. NOREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valparaiso, in the county of Porter and the State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to puzzle bags, pocket purses, and the like, and more particularly to ak device of VVVthis character in which the opening or mouth is hidden from view so as to prevent fraudulent use or entrance to same.` Y l It is an object ofthe invention to provide a device of this character which can be easily manipulated by one familiar'with its operation.
It is further an object to produce an article which while being of simple, cheap and durable construction will alsobe capable of use as a mail pouch, saddle bag or other like receptacle when enlarged on the same principle, at the same time proving more advantageous and serviceable than other devices of this character.
IVith the foregoing and other objects vin view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing 'the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a yfront view of the device in the preferred form; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same in a closed position, taken on the line of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view showing the same open; Fig. 4t is a detail view of the bottom and end forming portion of the purse; Fig. 5 is a view of the portion forming the central slitted part, the lower part of the same and also showing the hand gripping loops applied thereto; Fig. 6 is a view of an inside perforated lower portion made in duplicate; Fig. 7 is a view of a lower part, perforated to act in conjunction witli the part shown in Figs. 5 and 6; Fig. 8 is a view in duplicate of the upper side forming portions; and Fig. 9 is a detail view in part showing the manner of securing the bottom portion to the slotted portion shown in Fig. 5.
In the drawings, A, indicates the top of the purse which comprises two pieces of malreduced portion slitted'at E and a lower Vportion G, the same width as the fporti'on B, said upper terial B, shown in Fig. v8, scalloped as at C, and inclosing an intermediate portion D, F rg. 5. The portion D, l'comprises "an upper to form ribs F,
portion 'being' pro- -vided with hand gripping loops H, if desired. Corresponding to the lower portion G, is a part I, Fig. 7, having its upper end reduced and provided with perforations K, said parts being secured by stitching, their union, being accomplished by the bottom forming strip L, having reduced ends M, adapted to be folded and secured to the ribs N, to the eXtreme sides of the ribbed portion as is more clearly shown in Fig. 9. Secured to the inner faces of the lower ends of each of the parts B, are the segmental parts O having perfo-rations P.
In securing the parts together, the same are stitched around the edges thereof as indicated in dash lines in the several figures of the drawing and by reason of the poi-- tion D, at the ribs being reduced in width the same is left free to slide between the laced part R, formed by passing cord or the like through the perforations K, and P, and the slits E.
In stitching the same as described the lower ends of the parts B, having the parts O secured thereto are left to project below the ribs to conceal the same from view and be free to be lifted in order to open the purse.
Itwill thus be seen that I have provided a device which, while especially adapted as a purse in the manner stated, will be capable of many other uses, in the same form, proving at the same time to be more efficient in operation, than other devices of this character.
That I claim is:
1. In a receptacle, an upper portion comprising front and back pieces, an intermediate portion secured at its upper end with the front and back pieces having their edges in alinement, the upper part of said intermediate portion being provided with s lits form-l ing ribs, a piece forming the oppositeside of the receptacle part having perforations in its upper reduced end, pieces in duplicate secured to the inner lower faces of said front and back pieces, having similar perforations,
l lacing for said perforations and slits allowing movement of the ribs therethrough, and a strip secured between said receptacle forming parts, said strip having reduced ends, said reduced ends being folded'andsecured to the outermost ribs of the intermediate portion and adapted to move therewith.
2. In a purse, an upper portion comprisingscalloped front and back pieces, an intermediate portion secured at its upperen to said front and back pieces, ate portion beingprovided with a series of slits forming ribs, and being enlarged below the seid ribs, the upper edge of the enlargement being in alinement with the lower ends of the slits, a bottom portion similar to the lower portion vof said intermediate portion, said bottom portion being provided with said intermediperfor-ations along its upper edge, reinforcing strips secured to the inner sides of said front and back pieces at their lower ends, said reinforcing pieces being provided with perforations along their upper edges, lacing for said perforations passing through the slits aforesaid, and a strip secured between the bottom portions and provided with re duced ends adapted to be secured to the outermost ribs to move therewith through the lacing in opening and closing the purse.
JOHN Gr. NOREN. Vitnesses:
JOHN T. DONALDSON, CARL C. CHUM.
