JAMES M. DOWNHAM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SASI-I-CORD HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. DOWNHAM, a c tizen of the United States, residing at Qh cago, in the county of Cook and State of l lhnois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and ac curate description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sash cord holders or the like and more particularly that class of holder adapted to secure the sash cord to the window sash in such a way that the cord may be conveniently and quickly attached to or detached from the window sash if clesired, without removing the sash from the window frame and thereby requiring considerable time and labor as well as possibly defacing the frame or window when removing the sash.
My invention has for its objects the production of an etlicient and more simple, convenient and satisfactory device of the kind described and is such a device as is applicable to the general style of window frame and sash without requiring a remodeling of the same.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts. Figure l is a View in elevation of a portion of a window sash and frame with my preferred form of device applied to the same, Fig. 9. is a view in elevation of one edge of the sash taken substantially on line 22, Fig. 1 showing my device positioned on the sash. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the body of the device, Fig. 4, is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, Fig. 6 is a partial sectional View showing the preferred manner of securing a rope sash cord to the device, Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line 77 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a tape sash cord, showing the preferred method of securing the tape of the device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the win dow frame provided with one or more sashes 2 with window glass 3, the sash being re- Specification of Letters Patent.

tained in the frame by means of suitable stops 4t and 5 or their equivalent. The sash is connected by means of the sash cord 8 or the equivalent, to a balancing or window weight 19, the sash cord extending through the frame in the usual or in any preferred .way and suitably connected to the weight 19 which may be arranged in the frame in the usual manner. My device is adapted to con nect or secure the sash and sash cord 8 together in such a way that the cord may be detached from the sash when desired and the same cord or a new one attached thereto, at any time without removing the sash from its frame.
As shown, my device comprises the body part 7 preferably made in the shape shown and inserted or set in a recess in the edge of the sash 2, preferably proximate to the upper edge or end of the same. The body part 7 may be secured to the sash by means of screws 99 or their equivalents, if desired. The body part in the preferred construction is provided with an extended portion 10 adapted to extend to the face of the window sash preferably on the inner side thereof and Within the body as shown, which preferably registers with the usual groove 6 in the window sash.
A screw or bolt 13 or the equivalent for the purpose preferably extends from without the sash, as shown from the face of the extension 10, into the chamber 11 and is adapted to engage the sash cord 8 in any suitable or convenient way. As shown the sash cord 8 is preferably provided with a link 12 adapted to enter the chamber 11 and be engaged by the screw or bolt 13. When it is desired to detach the sash cord from the sash, the screw 13 is removed after which the cord may be drawn up through the slot or groove 6 in the sash. To again connect sash cord, I mean to include a chain, rope,
tape or their equivalents for the purpose.
As shown in Flg. 6 when a rope is employed a fastening member 14, 1s preferably secured to the end of the rope. The fastening member shown in the drawings coinprises a piece of metal rolled in the form of a tube and provided with teeth or points 15, and depressions 16 adapted to engage the rope and secure the fastening member thereto. The fastening member 14 is provided with openings 17 therethrough adapted to permit the engagement of the link 12 therewith. It might also be noted that the fasening member 14 keeps the rope from unraveling.
In the form shown in Fig. 8 wherein the sash cord comprises a tape 8 of any suitable material, the tape is bent over back as shown with a band 18 wrapped around, whereby the link 12 is securely attached thereto.
The body part may bemade of any suitable material and it should be noted that in the preferred construction shown the body part is adapted for use on either side of the window frame by simply reversing the same.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the form, design or combination of parts shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or combinations shown.
W hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described a substantially cylindrical body part adapted to be positioned within the sash and provided with an extended portion to the face thereof,
cord adapted to extend within said opening and a cord engaging member extending from the exterior of the sash into said opening and arranged to operatively engage said cord.
3. In a device of the kind described, a sub stantially cylindrical body part adapted to be positioned in the sash edge and provided with an extended portion extending substantially flush with the face of the sash, said body part provided with an opening therein.
in combination with the sash cord provided with a link thereon adapted to extend within said opening and a screw extending from the exterior of the sash into said opening and engaging said link. f In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. j
