The invention consists in the novel construction and arran ement of its parts as hereinafter. describe delineated in the aceompanyng drawings, and particularly pointed'out in that portion of this instrulncnt wherein patentablenovelt iszclaimed Vfor certain distnctiveand pecu ia'r features of the device, it beiugunderstood that within the scope of what is' hereinafter thus claimed divemehangesinthe form proporf tions, size and minor details of the. structure may be made'without departing from the spirit` or s'acri'eing any ofthe advantages of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference, are employed to, 'de nyote corres' ending parts throughoutt'fi' several res ofV the drawings. i
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows m invention 1n `verticeI transverse section'. ig. 2 is a top plan thereof, p'arts structure. A
In carrying out my invention, I provide, pr1mar1ly,a housing,comprising a base plate 1 from which rises a socket 2 circular in outllne and |inwardly spaced from'the periphery of the base plate 1, the said base plate' 1 preferably being square in outline. Within the periphery of the socket 2 the base plate 1 carries on its up r face a ball race3. I

of the cap 9 is threaded as denoted byt'e numeral 10, and the soc et 2 in its turn is threaded to en a e th edge of the cap'. The 'ca'p 9 is rovi e with a central aperture 21, designe to receive the standard 7, andabout 11. he capis'provided upon its lower face with a ball race 17, arranged to register with 'the ball race 6 in the up Jer Aballs 18 bein disposed in the several ball races between tie cap 9 and the head land between the head '4 and the baseplate 1. I further provide a collar 12 arrange/dto inclosc the standard 7, and disposed between said standard Tand the cap 9, the collar 12 bein supported 4stan ard." The upper terminal of this collar 1-2 is outwardly turned and downwardly fbent to form a flange 13, arranged to inclose 4 the flange 11, whici risesfroin the upper face ofthe cap. stand from the -baseplate 1 and the socket 2, the said ear being provided with an aperture 15 to receivethe end of an electric wire, the said wire being retained in place by a set screw 16 or like device mounted in the ear 14.. vAs herenbefore pointed out, the base plate in its preferred form is s uare, and near each of its corners is dispose .an aperture 19 whereby the device may be bolted to the top of acar, thesaid apertures 19 determiin the four corners of a square, so that any si e of the base plate 1 may be placed forward. Thefu'nder face of the cap 9 is beveled upwardtoward' the aperture 21, as denoted by the numeral 20, 'By this con; struction a chamber isfforrned between the upon' shoulder 8 of the' A suitable ear 14 may be arranged to out-- edo@ this a )erture'21 rises from the cap 9 a flange face of thehead cap 9 and .the head 4, and it is designed that this chamber shall be filled with a suitable lubricant to a point approximating the line A-B, of Fig.- 1. v
ln practical operation, the cap 9 is rotated downward to hold the halls 1S in place in the several ball races, and it will he seen that when the device is so assembled, the balls serve not only to receive the weight'rf the structure, which may be eai'ried by the standard 7, but: serve as well to receive the lateral thrust of the icad 4. By this constructon'the head 4 is prevented from coniing in contact at its edge with the socket 2. lhe collar 12 serves to protect the interior of the device from the elements and from any dust or dirt whichfotherwise mightfind its' way thereinto. The cap 9 being threaded into the socket 2 is adaptedv to adjust, to a. nicety, the pressure upon the balls'IB, and to take up any wear in the balls or the ball races. l
It is to be understood that the trolley pole may be mounted upon the up er terminal of the standard 7 in any suitab e manner, and it will be seen that when so mounted the saine will he anti-frictionally supported and will remain free to turn in any direction under the slightest impulse.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as neiv, and desire toproteet, by Letters Patent, is:--
l. In a device of the class described .i
housing; a head journaled for rotation -n j l f .the head and betiveeiithe head and tltehousing, and being positioned to restrain the head the housing and being provided with a ci tral standard; a cap mounted in the top of the housing and having u central aperture to receive the standard, the cap having a [lange .upstanding about the central aperture; a collar disposed between the standard and the cap and having a depending Ilange to incluse the .flange of the cap. l
2. In a device of the class described, a housing; a head journaled for rotation in a ca mounted in the top of the housing v and iaving a central aperture to receive the standard, the cap having a flange upstandi-iig about the central aperture; a collar disposed between the standard and the cap and bein supported by the shoulder of the stan ard, the collar being provided with a depending fiange to inclose the llange of the cap.
3. Vlin a device of the class described, a housing having a circular ball race; a head journa ed for rotation in the housin r and spaced from the sides thereof, the sai head being provided with a central standard, the upper terminal of the'standard being reduced to form a shoulder, the said head bein provided upon it lower face with a bal race registering with the ball race in the housing, and having a ball race upon its upper face;
threaded into the top of the housing l a ca and being provided with a central aperture to receive the standard, the cap having an upstanding {iange disposed about the aperture and having in its lower face a. ball race registering with the ball race in the upper face of the head; a collar disposed between the standard and the cap and heilig supi ported by the shoulder of the standard, the Y collar being provided flange -to inelose the Harige of the cap; balls with a depending disposed in the races between the cap and against vertical and lateral movement.
In testimony that I claiin the foregping as my own, I have hereto .'itlixed luy signa- -tulc in the presi-nce of two witnesses.
