Application filed Hatch 19, 180? Serial No. ear r12.
. trio Lamps, or" wnich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shade holders for incandescent electric lamps, (BSpQClZIllY for tungsten and the like high-etliciency lamps,
where the shade holder is in the form of a more or less orinunental canopy or cover inclosing the socket and neck of the lamp.
The main object of my invention is to so construct such a shade holder that it can. be made inexpensively and yet permit of great variety of ornamentatimn' that the shade may be easily put in place and as easily removed and yet be securely held in place in the holder, and that the socket may be conveniently wired or its interior exan'iined when the shat e holder is in place. l ob ect of my invention is to so (tiled of to rely loc the lamp and prevent its wrongful removal.
in the accompanying lrawingsl igur It is a front elevation with parts in section, showing" tie door of the shade holder open; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; 3 is outside View drawn to a srnall, scale of a modification;
A, F 1, indicates a threaded pipe end onto which nipple s of the socket S may be 'rewed. he lamp 1% may be screwed or oth rwise held the soclzet as usual. The s holder is in the form oi: a casing int-losing the lamp socket and neck of the lamp and supported on the cap of the socket and :omprises a cap C and a body portion lhthe latter divided Vertically into two or n'iorc rtions. The cap has a central opening A its passage therethrough of the nipa lock nut it on the threaded pipe may la used to clamp the shade holder and the s l in any desired position rotarily.
in sent instance l have shown the l ody on of the shade holder as made in three set ions, (Z, (Z d of substantially equal size. act, it convenience of inflilllftltk tnrc retp: it. tlic three parts may be made identically alike, stamped or pressed up in the same dies. Each s ction may be made the shade holder that it may ne at the top with a reverse flange 5 to embrace, fit over and engage the annular flange e of the cap C. Each section hasatone edge an offset portion 6 to lap and fit over the adjacent edge of the next section. The two sections (5 and may be soldered or brazed or otherwise secured together where this overlap occurs while the sections (Z and d are hinged together at 7 and 8, Fig. 1, so that the section I] may act a door to the casing formed by the other two sections. While the door is closed as shown in Fig. 2, its oltsct edge will overlap the edge of sec-. tions (Z and I provide a looking or latching means to kcepthc door closed. In Figs. 1 and 2. l have shown the locking means a consisting of a spring blade 9 secured at- 15 to the insideoi the section (I and having at its other end a catch 11 to snap into a hole 12 in the edge of the door' section d. This spring may carry a push button 13, projecting through a hole in the section d so that by pressing on this push button the door section (Z will be unlatehed and be free to he turned back upon its hinges as shown in I ig. l. tlther forms of looking or latching means may he provided. The lower open end of this three-part canopy D is made with a reversed lug D to receive and engage the flanged neck 6 of the shade E. When the door section of the canopy or shade holder is thrown back as shown in Fig. 1, the flanged neck of the shade may be pushed from the front sidewise into the flanges l) of the sections (Z (P, the metal haying sntlicient elasticity to let the Walls spring outwardly to permit the-shade neck to be entered into the holder. On closing the door (1, its flanged lower end will also engage the neck of the shade, and etlicient-ly hold the. later in place. The described provision of a hinged door section in this casing iriclosing the socket, the cap of which supports the shade holder, facilitates the wiring of the socket, as will be readily understood. I may also avail myself of this shade holder as a means oi locking the lamp in its socket, so as to prevent theft of the lamp. For this purpose there may be, formed on or attached to the inner face of each section (I, d, diet the shade holder a projecting finger 10, of ,suilicient length to enter the usual annular groove 16 in the base of the lamp B. In this case the door (I of the shade holder may be secured bya latch or Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 31, 1969.
ioek, which can only he opened by h y he inserted through a keyhole M: iii the see in, Fig. 3.
When the holder is used i 01. e key soolte; the edge of the door (Z or of the ediecent section (1 or both are recessed one to allow of the free passage of the key stein K, indicated in Fig. 3, and the construction do scribed enables-me io'ermnge the key socket in any desired position rotarily.
I claim as my invention- 1. A la n socket shade holder, comprising a casing a apted to be supported from the cap of the socket and to inclose the lotion and having a hinged door section with a fi lhe lower ends of the casing and door section to engage the shade and means to/Leetachnbly fasten the door section in closed pe sition.
2. A lamp socket shade holder, commising a casing to be supported from the can; of Q-he socket and i0 inclose ihe letter and made in sections hinged together with flanged lower ends to engage ihe shade and. means to de- ,tnchably fasten the sections togel'heir.
3. A lamp Socket shade holder, comprising a casing to be supported from the cap of? the socket and to inciose the lal'ter and made in three vertical sections two of which ni'e pen manently secured logether, the third section being hinged at one side to one section ,1 it on the other side to the :2, bhe eeveml sections having ed lower ende to engage the shade.
L, Ale. socket shedeholdencomprisin eep one three vertical sections, two 0. "which are permanently secured to the cap end to each e ther While the third is hinged to one of ihe seceions and adapted to be detechahiy fastened "in the other, the sevemi sections having lower to eng'ege the shede 5. A hemp sochei; easing with e hin 'ed door section adopted ho inolose the see at and lamp hose means on the easing and door section to en age die lam baee and a lock for the door eeeiioi'i openo lie by a key.
o. The eoinbineiion of o loinp'eocke with a and means no clamp the letter on ti I the socket and easing having a section with means at the lower .1 ged e ends of he casing door section to engage 1,
he ehnde and means to detachably fasten he door secion in closed position in iestnnony Whereoi 1 have signed my name to this sgz-eoifieation, in the presence of two subscribing \i'iineeses.
