Before commencing a detailed description of the invention as herein illustrated, it will be stated, in order to convey a clearer idea of the scope thereof, that such parts of the improved device as are indicated by letters of the alphabet thruout the present specification and accompanyingdrawing, appertain strictly speaking, to known species of electric lampsockets and fixtures therefor.' On the other hand, those parts of the device which are designated by numerals may be deemed to be features novel in themselves when considered as elements of the new combinations contribut'ed by the invention. It is to be understood that no claim is made to any of the known parts aforesaid as possessed of actual originality, save thru their association with the various elements of the improved device, as
it is by this correlation that there are presented a number of combinations serving to accomplish several new and useful purposes.
Having now particular reference to Fig. I of the annexed drawing, the letter A denotes the side-wall of a cast or stamped shell forming a part of `a familiar type of an electric fixture, in this case a ceiling canopy of rather shallow depth, to be used in instances where headroom is restricted. The means for holding this canopy with its basal portion inverted to the ceiling, indicated by a dot-anddash line B, has not been illustrated, as any- `one of the ordinary iitments therefor, well known in the electric fixture art, may be employed. Circumferentially of theV shell A, intermediate its upper and lower peripheries, the same may be assumed to be formed with any amaropriatenumber of lamp-socket receiving openings, one whereof is indicated at C. In the sides thereof each of these openings is provided with not lessthan one lateral extension orvnotch 11 for a purpose that will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
At E ris represented one of the standard types of short, straight-bodied lamp-sockets to the inner extremity whereof is removably affixed a cap F thru the agency of-the usual snap-locking arrangement Fl. The leadwires connected to socket E, are designated b y the reference letter G. Instead of the outer or lampreceiving end of said. socket terminating in a cylindrically shaped edge coextensive with the body of the metallic casing-E1 which ,in conformitywith common practice contains or envelops theinterior, conductive and non-conductive parts of the socket, this end of the casing is in the present embodiment of the invention, provided with a flange-like, continuous orvcircumferential abutment 13. The flange in question may be conveniently'formed integral with the mouth or open extremity of said casing El by turning over or flanging its edge at substantially right angles to the body thereof. A portion of the electric bulb or lamp entered into the said socket is depicted by dot-and-dash lines at H. On the side of flange 13 turned away from the lamp or facing inwardly towards the fixture A, there is struck up a lug or protuberance 15 designed to find lodgement in recess 11 'hereinabove referred to, said lug serving to locate the lamp-socket in a predetermined position relative tothe canopy fixture, i. e. prevent its said flange 13 from being rotated relative to the opening C.
Adjacent to the retaining abutment 1?), the body of the casingldl1 is furnished with screw threads 17 for a certain distance inwardly thereof. These threads as well as the snaplocks F1 at the opposite end of the said casing. are so proportioned that they will pass freely thru the aforementioned openingl C. A member 19 preferably in the nature of a sleeved flange, angular in cross-section, and constituting what may be termed a nut or thi rnble because formed internally thereof with threads corresponding to'those on the socket casing, is mounted on the latter as shown; this member 19 being thereby adapted for helical or spiral adjustment on casing E to coact with the interior wall surface of the fixture to apply a stress onto the socket E, sufficient to draw or pull up the same firmly into its assigned position. In order to afford a gripv for a Spanner to tighten or loosen member 19, ears 21 are provided on the upper or free side thereof, which ears are engageable by the implement just before referred to. `'letween the inner side of the fixture A and the apposed outwardly turned face of the flanged portion of said member 15), there may be interposed awasher 22?. composed of libre` rubber or soft metal, capable. at such times as pressure is exerted thcrcagainst by the said member, of yieldably conforming to the curvatures and irregularities occuring in the xtures boundary walls. vWhile not specifically illustrated, it will be comprehended that a similar washer for the same purpose, can be placed intermcdiately of the abutment 13 and the outer wall surface of the ccilin fixture A.
From what has been stated with respect to both of the structure depicted in Figs. l andlll, it can easily be seen. that but a frw minutes of time will be required to place and lock the type of socket represented in these views in its assigned position. The meniber employed to anchor the socket to its seat, is not only out of sight, but tampering therewith from the exterior of the fixture is impossible unless the latter in its entiretyis taken down or ofi1 the wall or ceiling to ywhich it is affixed. Still the erector of such fixtures is able to tell at a glance by looking from the outside thereof, whether the flange locator is in position for proper coaction With its receiving` recess.
