Description
NITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE B. DYEB, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
INIPROVED GAS-CARBURETOR.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. DYER, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gas Garburetors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawingsis a representation of a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the volute form of gas passage. Fig. 4 is a similar section showing a rectangular form of gas-passage.
My invention relates to ameans for increasing the brilliancy of the flame of the ordinary carbureted hydrogen gas and it consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, whereby the gas is held in contact with naphtha or other bituminous substance in a self-supplying apparatus for a considerable length of time rlhe letter A of the drawings designates a canister or box, of suitable metal, made airtight. This box is divided by partitions parallel to the bottom into two or more compartments of the same or nearly the same capacity, with exception of the upper compartment, B, which, forming a reservoir for the bituminous liquid, may be made larger than the others.
In the apparatus shown in the drawings there are, besides the reservoir B, four compartments, lettered, respectively, commencing at top, O D E F. Each of the compartments C D E F is, by the introduction of either a long plate, curved in the form of a volute, f, or a series of plane plates,f j', as shown, respectively, in Figs. 3 and 4, or in any similar manner, formed into a long narrow passage. Compartments C D E are connected each by a separate pipe, as c d' e', with the reservoir B.
'Ihe reservoir B is filled with bituminous liquid through t-he opening having a screwcap, a, in the top of the canister. By the stopcock in the pipe c communication is made with the compartment G. Gas being introduced by the pipe G, enters the bottom compartment, and, passing through the pipe b', forces down the liquid, which first ills the compartment C until its surface is level with the top of the small projecting tube h, when it overflows into the next compartment, which is also partially filled, and then vthe liquid overflows through the tube 7c into compartment E, thence through m into compartment F, which it fills until its surface is above the lower 'opening ofthe pipe b', when, as no more gas can pass up into the reservoir, the ilow is stopped. We now have, as it were, a bath of bituminous liquid in each compartment. Gas entering compartment F at G is caused to pass through the long passage and over the bitumen to the opening m, through which it is conducted into compartment E, and passes in like manner through the long passage in this compartment, and is admitted by the tube k into compartment D, passing over the naphtha or bitumen in the passage of this compartment,
and up through tube h into one end of the pasy sage in compartment D, is conducted over 'the liquid to the other end of the passage, and passes out bythe pipe N, ready for use.
rIhe height of the fluid in thereservoir is ascertained by mean's of a glasstube gage, S, communicating at top and bottom with the reservoir B. When the use of gas is limited, so that it does not pass very rapidly through the passages, the use of one or two of the upper compartments may be dispensed with byl shutting oft' the liquid from them by means of the stopcocks in their supply-pipes, as in c and d', and opening the stop-cock in the pipe e', communicating with the compartment next below. rIhe liquid may be removed from the reservoir or any compartment by taking out the screw-stopper o, w, fr, y, or z.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The carburetor herein described,having reservoir B, compartments O D E F, arranged as passages for gas, perpendicular plates f f, tubes h k m, pipes with stop-cocks c d e', pipes b N G, opening and screw cap c, openings and screw-Stoppers v w xyz, and gage S, constructed and arranged substantially as specied.
It testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. B. DYER.
