Specification of Letters Patent Patented Aug. 31, 1909.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SHEFFIELD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sanitary ater-Closets, of which the following is a specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a swinging receptacle for receiving the excrement, with stationary heating means extending downward into the chamber of the receptacle for contact with its contents, to heat and sterilize the same, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawing:-Figure 1 represents the vertical section of a water closet seat provided with my improvement. l i g. 2 representsa side elevation of the same.

In the drawing, A represents the water eloseit, and B the floor upon which it is 10- cate 0 represents a semi-globular receptacle pivoted to the bracket I), extending downward from the floor, and E is an electrically o erated spring catch, by means of which the receptacle C, may be either held in its receiving position as shown in Fi l, or released for discharging the heated contents. The pipe F extends downward into the cavity of the receptacle C and is surrounded by the spirally coiled steam pipe G, which is permanently secured to the under side of the floor B. Steam or other heating fluid is caused to circulate through the coils of the pipe G to heat the excrement which has passed from the closet A to the receptacle C, and upon the proper heating of the said excrement the catch E maybe withdrawn to release the receptacle and cause the discharge of its contents. Upon the discharge of its contents the said receptacle may be returned to its receiving position as shown in Fig. 1, by means-of the hand lever H, and link I, or otherwise- I claim as my invention:

The combination of-a water closet, with a swinging receptacle for holding the excrement, means for holding the said receptacle in its receiving position, and a stationarily held heatin means extending downward into the liquid contents of said swinging receptacle for heating and sterilizing the same, and means for discharging the heated and sterilizedliquid contents, from the swinging receptacle.
