Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1909. Serial No. 480,774.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED C. FUNK and THOMAS E. TURNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention rel-ates to hay presses of the rebounding plunger type, and 1n particular to the form of press inwhich the presser head is actuated by means of a draw bar connecting it with the power transmitting means.
It consists of means connected with the draw bar and operative in a manner to sustain the latter against excessive vibration during the operation of the machine; the object of our invention being to improve the construction of the mechanism indicated for the purpose of making it stronger and more eflicient in its operation. This result is attained by means of the mechanism illustrated in the drawing, in which Figure l is a. top plan view of part of a hay press embodying our invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail drawing representing a plan view of the swinging draw bar support; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 2 along the line A-B. j

1 designates a part ofthe bed frame of the machine, 2 the draw bar, 3 a power transmitting arm having one end of the draw bar connected therewith, the opposite end of said bar being connected with the presser head operating means 3 4 a power transmittin lever pivoted to the frame eccentric to said arm and having rollers 5 adapted to contact with the arm during a part of the rotative movement of the lever in a manner to. move the arm to actuate the draw bar in a directhe arm 3 is moved rapidly in an opposite direction, and when thelim'it of such movement is reached, contacts with a buffer spring mechanism 7 in a manner to cushion the force of its return.
The above described mechanism is all of a well-known form and in extensive use, and such use has disclosed a defect in the operation of the machine, the removal of which is the primary object ofour invention.
When the presser head rebounds and the draw bar is thrown rapidly toward the power transmitting means, the end connected with arm 3 moves in both a lateral and longitudinal direction, which movement causes a destructive vibration of the bar in the absence of some means for controlling such vibration. The means we have pr0- vided include a laterally projecting strap 8 secured to the upper side of the bed frame by means of bolts 9,-and having its outer end forming a clevis 10 adapted to receive in a pivotal manner one end of a radius bar 11, the opposite end of the bar being pivotally connected with the draw bar by means of clips 12 clamped to the bar by means of bolts 13. The bar swings from side to side of its pivotal connection with the strap when the machine is in operation and effectually controls the vibration of the draw bar.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A hay press including, in combination, a power transmitting arm, presser head operating means, a draw bar having one end connected with said presser head operating means and its opposite end with said power transmitting arm, a bed frame, a strap secured to said bed frame and projecting later ally therefrom, a radius bar having one end pivotally connected with the projecting end of said strap and its opposite end pivotally connected with said draw bar intermediate its ends by means of clips clamped to said draw bar, said radius bar being adapted to swing from side to side of its pivotal connection with said strap in a manner to pre vent an excessive vibration of said draw bar.
