HARRY F. GALBRAITI-I ANZI) CHARLES l'. BLAUE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Be itknown that we, HARRY F. GAL- nnal'rn and CHARLEs F. BLACK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia inthe county of Philadelphia and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table- Mats, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the act' com an ing d rawin Tlills lrrlventlon relates to a table mat and as hereinafter set forth a foldin mat that can be used on highly polished ta le tops to revent the surface thereof from being in- ],ured byhot dishes, such as plates and receptacles.
' A further object of the icventionis to provide a folding table matin a manner as hereinafter set forth through which air can freely circulate for cooling purposes thereby preventing an particu ar part of the table top A further object of the invention is to proet forth with means forming communicating and intersecting air chambers or passages whereb there is insured a distribution of air throng out the mat.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. table mat in a manner ashereinafter set forth Whereb the mat is formed of a pluf rality of :foldab e and interlocking sections, said sections when folded forming a small and compact parcel which/'can be conveniersly handled or stored in a `small space.
1th the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement andcomhination of scribed and illustrated in the accompanymg drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding arts throughout the several views, and in w ich,
Fi ure 1 is a side elevation of a'table showing t e adaptation therewith of amat inaccordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan.` Fig. 3 is a to lan. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion ofptiie mat showin a plurality of sections thereof partly folde and, Fi 5 is an enlarged perspective viewr of oneof` t e sections of the mat disassembledl said section being broken away at one 'endg A. mat in accordance `with this invention 'hinged together.

To all whom it my concern be folded one upon the other when the mat is not in use and to be extended with respect to one another so as to provide a flat matconstituting a protective medium for a table top. By way of example, the mat is illustrated es circular so as to conform to the shape of, completelyT cover and protect the top of the circular table shown in ig. 1.
As before stated the 'mat is formed of a plurality of sections whichare foldahle with respect to each other and which are also Eachnof said sections with the except-ion of the ei'id' sections com rises a bottom plate 1 and `a to 'plate 2, the atter being' arranged overanc spaced from the plate 1 to form anelongated air space 5. To
rovldc for the formation of the air space 5 the plate 2 at one lon itudinal edge is forme with a depending ri 3 cutsaway at equidistant points throughout its length to provide openings 3 for a purpose to be hereinrovide short Each of t e latter has formed in gral therewith a laterally extending protu rance 3 constituting a ledge for a pur ose to be hereinafter 'referred to. The protu er'ances 3 are arranged in longitudinal aline'ment with respect to each other."
Formed. integral with and depending from late 2 at a point removed from its other ongitudinal edge is `a Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
rib 4 cut-away at various points throughout its length to provide openmgs 4 which reg- ,ister with the openings 3 of an adjoining. section. Theylower face of the rib 4 is in' alinementwith the lower'face of the lugs'3".V
providingof the ri'b4 in the manner as stated orms a seat 4Jv which is adapted to engage the ledges provided by thsvprotuberances 3 on an adjacent section. en the plates 1, 2, are in operative position with respect to each other the strips 10 are mounted upon the u per face of the plate 1 whereb the air cham ers 5 which` extend in the of the length of the plates are provided. The openings 3* and 4 constitute means for estabhshing communication' between the airpassages or channels 5. Each outer sec tion of the mat hasits inner side constructed similar to the inner side of an inner section, and each 4of said outer sections has its outer side provided with spaced grooved lugs 9 rotuberanees 3 and secured to the irection of liexible material indicate forming opcnin s 9". 4Each of the airpasf sages or channe s 5 is open at each end as at 5, The lower face of each of the plates l. and the outer face of each of the. lates 2 has secured thereto a l thin sheet o cork 7 .0r other cushioning material. The top plates of the sections are connected to the bottom plates by suitable adhesive substance that'4 is to-say, the cork'strips are 'provided with adhesive substance for'connecting the plates torethe. u f y he sections are hinged tovether -by strips il by the reference character 8, thestri s bein uponybothx sides of the mat and a tornate y disposed with respect, toeach other so that the-sem tions when desired', can be folded onen )on` the other. When the ,mat is entende to cover the table, the openings 3", 4* register, so that the bjr-passes 6 formed by the open ings 3, 4, will establish communication between `the spaces or channels 5 and form an'Y air. chamber throughout themat. 1
It isievident from the foregoing construction of table met; thatlif a hot plate or other dish be placed upon one portion 0i the mat, that the air between the plates 1 and V2 of the mat sections will revent these latter from becoming hot an ,that the heatfrom'the plate 2 upon which the` plate or receptacle rests will be.idisseminsited throughout the air chamber. i W Having, now described l our invention,
