Description
UNITED STATEv ATENT QFFIGE.
JOSEPH E. OUTRIDGE, OF' NEWPORT, ENGLAND.
IMPROVED STEAM-VALVE DEVICES.
Speeiiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 93,22l, dated August 3, 1869; patented in England August 1, 1868.
To all whom lt may concern:
Beit known that I, JosEPH EDLYN OUT- RIDGE, of Newport, in the Isle of Wight, England, have invented or discovered certain Improvements in Equilibrium Slide-Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, true, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexedthat is to say:
My invention relates to a peculiar construction and arrangement of mechanism, whereby the pressure of steam and vacuum is removed from slidevalves, and their free working obtained without friction upon their faces.
I accomplish this by attaching to the ordinary valve-box of a steam-engine an apparatus consisting of one or more castings, each casting containing ports or passages for the inlet and outlet of the steam. The faces of the castings which contain the ports or passages are opposite to each other, and may be iixed parallel to each other. Between these faces I place aslide, which has an aperture. in it whereby the communication from passage to passage is perfectly free.
When I employY a double slide I place blades of brass or other metal upon lthe part or parts of the slide exposed to the steam, to prevent a passage between the two slides or parts.
, I provide for any necessary pressure upon the valve by means of a lever affixed to the slide-rod. That part of the rod which holds the valve being fiat, will keep the valve or valves to their faces.
In some cases I employ two or more valves composed ot' castings andl slides constructed upon the same principle, the number ofthe valves being regulated by the size of the steam-chest or va1ve-box, and being fitted as above explained.
My inventioncan be applied to any kind of engine where slide-valves are necessary or expedient.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a top view of a valve constructed accordingV to my invention, thejtop cover of the valvebox being removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the valve applied to an ordinary steam cylinder.
Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the casting constructed as hereinbefore described. t is the cylinder; b, the valvebox; c, the casting, and d, the slide, which is single. e
f are the two ports communicating between the valve-box and the front and back of the cylinder, respectively.
The casting o has two opposite faces, as shown, and is provided with a port or passage, g, in each face to communicate with the port e, and a port or passage, h. in each face, to communicate with the port f. The casting is also formed with a central exhaust opening or port, l', corresponding with a similar opening, h, in the slide el. w l
l is thesteam-supply pipe, and m the exhaust. In the forward movement of the valve the slide el passes the ports h to the port f, and thence to the back end of the cylinder. The opening h of the slide, also, in the forward movement uncovers the ports g in theY or otherwise, the flat part of the slide -rod keeps the slides to their faces.
Fig. 5 is a perspectivel view, and Fig. 6 a
transverse section, showing a slide made double, or in two parts, as hereinbefore referred to, band rl of brass or other metal being placed around the slide, to prevent steam passing between the two parts.
Figs. 7 and 8 show one of my cast-ings made with wedge shaped faces, or faces in- .clined to one another, to receive a wedgeshaped valve or valves.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is-
l. The valve-seat o, ports g h t', valve d, the valve-rod and weight-levers w, constructed and arranged relatively to the ports ef m of the cylinder a, substantially as described.
2.In combination therewith, the band h, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I, the said JOSEPH ED- LYN OUTRIDGE, have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1869.
' J. E. OUTRIDGE.
