PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY C. LENDERMAN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.`
SLIDE-VALVE. f i
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,419,`dated December 27, 1904.
` Application filed August 12, 1904:. Serial No. 220,546.
To @ZZ whom it may c07wrn/.-y Y f Be it known that I, HENRY C. LENDERMAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Port-" land, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain vnew and useful Improvements in Slide-Valves; andvI do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the slide-valves used for distributing steam to the-cylinders of steam-engines; and it consists in the novel construction `and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a steam-chest and 'a slidevalve constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the face of the slidevalve.
A is a portion of a steam-cylinder, and Z2' represents its steam-supply ports at the ends thereof.
B represents the exhaust-cavities, and 4Gis the steam-inlet cavity, which receives the steam from a suitable supply-pipe.v
D is the slide-valve, which is of the typeV shown in the patent to C. M. Giddings, dated March 17, 1885, No. 314,120. This slidevalve is provided with a cover 2, two curved diaphragms 3, having steam-supply ports L in them, and exhaust-chambers 5 at the inner faces of the diaphragme. The diaphragme are arranged near the ends of the valve, and E is a steam-space lbetween them. Ports or passages for steam e extend over the diaphragms to the face of the valve. F is the steam-chest, in which the 'said slide-valve works, and f is the valve-rod by means ofwhich the said valve is reciprocated in the steam-chest. ters the steam-cavity C under the valve, and the steam-space E and the ports e are always filled with steam at the full working pressure. The steam is admitted to the ends of The steam from the boiler ensuitablev nut and operating to regulate the pressure of the spring and also to guide the valvespindle. t The valve I is arranged in a valvecasing e, which is provided with a suitable seat for the valve. This valve I is a relief-valve which admits steam lfrom the space 6 behind the valve to the steam-space E inside the valve when the pressure in the said space exceeds that in the steam-space E. The valve I is normally held to its seat by the pressure of the steam inside the steam-spaceE. The two Valve-casings depend from the said valvecover between the said diaphragme of the valve and travel back and forth with the said valve. l
What I claim is' 1. The combination, with a steam-chest, and a slide-valve working therein and provided with an internal steam-space anddiaphragms at its end portions which form steam-ports and exhaust-chambers; of two valves G and I which open in opposite directions, said valves being suspended from the cover 2 of the said slide-valve inthe steam-space between its said diaphragms and operating to maintain the lsteam-pressure in the said /steam-space of the valve and in the steam-chest behind the valve at a prearranged ratio.
2. The combination, with a steam-chest, and a slide-valve working therein and provided with an internal steam-space and diaphragme at its end portions which form steam-ports and exhaust-chambers; of a valve carried by the said valve and operating to admit steam from the steam-chest to the said steam-space inside the valve whenever the pressure in the steam-chest exceedsthat in the said steamspace, and a second valve also carried by the IOO said slide-valve and provided With an adjustable spring` and means for adjustingr the pressure of the said spring and operating to admit steam from the said steam-space inside the valve to the said steam-chest when the pressure in the said steam-space exceeds that in the said steam-chest by a prearranged amount.
3. The eombination,\vith a steam-chest, and a slide-valve Working' therein and provided With an internal steam-space and distributingports; of two Valves G and I which open in g
