NEIL D. MUNN, OF DRESDEN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
STEAM-GENERATING BLACKSMITHS FORGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1908. Serial No. 460,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEIL D. MUNN, of the town of Dresden, county of Kent, Province of Ontario, Canada, blacksmith, have I invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Generating Blacksmiths Forges.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the heat generated in an ordinary blacksmiths forge may be rendered available to operate a small steam engine for general use in a blacksmiths shop, and I attain this object by the mechanism hereinafter fully described and then definitely claimed.
Figure 1 is a vertical side view of my device as applied to an ordinary blacksmiths forge. Fig. 2 is a front view of the boiler with the hood shown in Fig. I removed.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hot water twyer and fire pot. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line aa Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross section on line Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is lower guide ring shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 7 is upper guide half ring shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the various figures.
In Fig. 1 Y is a base piece for supporting the fire pot, boiler etc., which may be made of metal or of brick work or other material, as may be desired. U is the firepot shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 5. This fire pot is surrounded by the twyer iron surrounding the fire pot and forming water spaces W as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. This twyer iron is divided by partition (Z shown by the Figs. 3 and 5, which separates the entrance into the water space 7 of the pipe B and the pipe O hereafter referred to. G is a blow off valve communicating with the interior of the water space surrounding the fire pot. O is a housing formed below the twyer iron and fire pot with a hinged bottom P hinged at p to the housing. This carries a plunger rod P which passes through the half guide ring M shown in Fig. 7, and the guide ring M. The half ring is opposite the entrance of the air pipe L from the bellows, so that the air may pass more freely up through the top K of the plunger rod 39 and through the orifices is formed therein to the bottom of the fire pot. The top K with orifices is shown particu larly in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 shows the hinged door P closed and. holding the top K of the plunger rod up in position to support the fire in the fire pot.
hen it is desired to dump ashes and cinders the lever arm N shown in Fig. 5 is pulled down, as indicated, thus opening the door so as to allow the escape of the ashes etc. When pressure is removed from this lever arm the counterweight Z) on the extension arm reseats the hinged base door P and forces the top K of the plunger rod up into position in the base of the fire pot.
In Fig. 2 it is further seen that a boiler V preferably of the vertical type and widening toward its upper end is supported on the base pieces in proximity to the fire pot. This boiler is provided with flues F, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which carry the products of combustion from the fire pot up through the boiler and into the smoke pipe X. This boiler is provided with water gage R and steam gage S. A is a cold water feed pipe discharging into the bottom of the boiler while B is a pipe which carries the water from the boiler to the water space V below the fire pot. This water becomes intensely heated in passing around the water space to the partition (Z, and the heated water and steam is carried up through the pipe G discharging into the top of the boiler as indicated. D is av safety valve on this hot water pipe 0 while E is the steam feed pipe to the engine. H is a hood pivotally connected to the front of the boiler and is situated over the fire pot. It is held in position by a cross rod J I which is supported by the hooks J shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This hood H can either be removed altogether from the hook or it can be tilted up into position so that the hook it engages with the top of the boiler. It will thus be seen that the water which passes through the cold water feed pipe through the bottom of the boiler is conveyed thence down the pipe B to the water space formed between the twyer iron and the fire pot where the water becomes intensely heated. It is thence carried up the pipe O adjoining the partition (Z and the steam and hot water is discharged into the top of the boiler. This heated water circulates freely through the boiler and is further heated by means of the flues F which are formed in the boiler as indicated.
By means of these improvements it will be seen that I am able to supply power for a small engine to run other necessary mech- Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
anism connected with a blacksmith shop by utilizing the heat supplied by the ordinary blacksmiths forge.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a steam generating blacksmiths t'orge, the combination with the fire pot, of a twyer jacket surrounding the fire pot and forming a water space, a boiler provided with fines leading to the smoke pipe, a cold water inlet pipe at the bottom of the boiler, a pipe communicating between the bottom of the boiler and the water chamber in the twyer jacket, a hot water pipe leading from the water chamber in the twyer jacket to the top of the boiler, a partition formed in the twyer jacket between the pipe openings, and a steam feed pipe leading from the top of the boiler, substantially as specified.
2. In a steam generating blacksmiths forge, the combination with the fire pot, of a partitioned twyer jacket surrounding the fire pot and forming a water space, a blow off valve from the water space, a boiler provided with flues leading to the smoke pipe, a hood over the fire place pivotally connected to the front of the boiler, a cold water inlet pipe at the bottom of the boiler, a pipe communicating between the bottom of the boiler and the water chamber in the twyer acket, a hot water pipe leading from the water chamber in the twyer jacket to the top of the boiler, a partition formed in the twyer jacket between the pipe openings, a safety valve at the top of the hot water pipe, and
a steam feed pipe leading from the top of 35 the boiler, substantially as specified. Dresden, Ont. 24th October 1908.
