To all whom. 'it may concern:
Be it known, that I, HARRYK. RAYMOND, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of (f)hio, have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Inner Tubes of- Pneumatic Tires, specification.
My invention pertains to improvements in pneumatic tires, and relates more specilically to the construction of the inner inflatable' tube.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a tire, the outer casing being shown in section and the inner tube in elevation; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the inner tube in its deflated condition; Fig. 8 a longitudinal sec-v tional view of the abutting and overlapping ends of the inner tube; Fi 4 a transverse sectional view, taken on the ine 4 4 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 5 a' longitudinal sectional view, showing a modification of the invention.
lhe tube forming the basis of the present invention' is of the overlapping-end type, such, for instance, as those shown in United States Letters Patentto Morgan & Wright,
Nos. V502,047 and 502,048,Vv dated July 25,A
1893, wherein the member of which the tube is formed is closed4 for a distance from each end, the closed portions overlapping the main body of the tube when the same 1s positioned within the outer casing and the tube inated.
The main object 'of the present invention is to provide, a fastening device or devices for the overlapping endsI lof the tube, so as to hold said'ends in their proper relation to each other-'and to the .body of the tube and thus prevent the tube from becoming twisted when placed within the outer casing.
In the dra\vings,fl4`igs. l to 4 inclusive, l indicates the main body of the inner tube, the ends 2. and 3' of which are flattened and pernmnently closed by vnlcanizing together the opposite portions of the tube which are l brought into contact with each other. The flattened portion 9, is provided with an eyelet 4l; thronglrwhich a valve-stein 5 is passed when the partsnre to be positioned within the inner easing.
` In order to strcngthellthe end 9. ofthe tube, :L strip of canvas or similar textile of which the following is a.
material, 6, will be secured to said portion prior to passing the eyelet al. therethrough, said strip, as will be seen upon reference to Figs. l and 3, underlying the pointwhere the edges of the outer casing come together', thus preventing the flattened end from being pinched by the outer casing when the same is drawn together inthe act of securing it u )on the rimoifwheel. The opposite flattene end 3 is provided with a buttonhole or opening 7 said hole being reinforced by a piece of canvas 8, vulcanized or otherwise secured upon the outer face .of said flattened portion. A button preferably hav-` ing a iiexible head 9 and preferably a .lexible shank-10, is secured to the bodyof the tube at a point opposite the button-hole, when the tube isl in its normal position,`or
in other words, when the valve-stem 5 is passed through the eyelet, and the length .of
the tube'is equal or approximately equal to the dimensions lof the outer tube or casing inv which it is to be placed. The shank V10 is preferably formed with a base-piece llof ru ber, said, base piece being solutioned or vulcanized to the body of the tube so that it becomes in eilect an integral-portion thereing flexible, and the end 3 beinglikewise flexible, the parts readily conform to the casing when the tube is inflated.
The present-type of tube is particularly useful in motor cycles, the chief fadvantage being that in order 'to insert a newtube the `v wheel does not have to be removed from the frame, as is the case where a complete annular tube is inserted inthe outer casing.
In inserting tubes of the character herein set forth, in which one end of the lap is free, considerable diiiiculty has been exn perienced in keeping the tube str. ight and preventing it from twisting, as must -be done in order to give efficient service. The
yprovision of the button or some' similar fastening device for the ordinarily free end of the lap makesI it easier to insert the lapped portions of the tube land aids in securing the desired result.
By the employment of a flexible fasteningy for the overlapping end'of the inner tube which bears against the inner portion of the casing next adjacent to the tread thereof, no lump or projection will be formed upon the casing or 'the tread thereof when the tire is iniiated. In other words, the exible yor yielding fastening device conforms tojthe struction is lshown in' Fig.- 5, .the buttons andy allied parts -being'o the same formas those shown 1n the other ii ures and having, consequently, the same re erence numerals.
Havlng thus described my invention, what I claim is:

An inner tube for infiatable tires, comprising a hollow body having closed ends, said ends being adapted to overlap each other and. the body vportion of the tubeya valve-stem extending from the body .and adapted to pass through-an opening formed in the adjacent end of the tube; and means for securing the opposite end to 4the bodyjof the tube. i f i 2.
