To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT Gnrnsnnon, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, county of limgs, and State of New York,

have invented certain new and useful improvements in Box-Strap Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a reel for holding a metallic tape used as a box fastener.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive reel in which the frame portion may be made from a single metallic strip, which is so formed as to provide a support or bearing integral with the metallic strip for a suitable roll, and which frame is so made that the sides thereof will serve as a retaining means for a roll of metal tape, and to guide the same as the tape is removed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a reel in which the frame may be stamped or formed from a single strip, and the means for supporting the roll made to serve also as the means for holding the ends of the frame together.

The invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line HL-IH of Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of the f 'ame, show ing the roll support or bearing, and means for holding the ends of the frame together.

The frame 10 is preferably made from a single metal strip which is bent, as at 11, and has the ends extending inwardly so as to form the sides 12 and 13. The side 13 comprises two members lt and 15, and has the ends thereof projecting inwardly far enough to overlap, and in each of the members 1% and 15 is an aperture 16, through which passes the ends of the members 17 forming a support and bearing 18 for a roll 19. This roll 19 may be of wood or of any suitable material, and is rotatably held on the support 18 between the members 12 and 13 of the frame, and the members 17 of said support are preferably formed integral with the side 12. As shown the members 17 are stamped or cut from the main frame on each side of a part 20, and said members are forced outward, and may be slightly or otherwise curved to form a suitable bearing surface for the roll 19, and the outer ends of said members are passed through the openings or apertures 16, and are bent, as at 21, so as to lie parallel with the members 1 1 and 15, to rigidly hold the parts together. By this means the frame may be made entirely from a single piece of metal strip, and the said strip bent so as to form sides which may be quickly and properly held together, at the same time having the fastening means serve as a bearing for the supporting roll.

The roll 19 may be provided with a slot 22 in which the end of the box-fastening tape 23 may be inserted. The tape 23 is adapted to be wound upon the roll 19 between the sides 12 and 13 of the frame 10, so that the latter will properly guide and hold the roll of tape between the sides in such a way that parts of the tape may be removed as desired. The frame 10 is ordinarily held against a suitable support so that the tape may be readily removed, and for this purpose each end is provided with an opening 2%, which extends through both sides 12 and 13, so that a nail may be driven through said openings, though other means may be employed whereby the said frame may be properly supported.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, efficient and inexpensive frame and reel is provided in which the frame may be made of a metal strip and entirely of one piece; that the frame may be held together by a part of the metal strip which also serves as a bearing for the roll that carries the metal roll of tape; and that the frame is so made that it will serve as an effective guide and retaining means for the roll of tape.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described, comprising a metallic frame made of a single strip having two sides adapted to form guides for a roll of material and having a bearing formed from one of the sides and comprising two members which project therefrom and serve to hold the other side substantially parallel thereto, and a roll 1'0- tatably held between the sides on said bearing.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a metallic frame made of a single strip having two sides adapted to form guides for a roll of material and having a bearing formed from one of the sides which projects therefrom and serves to hold the other side substantially parallel thereto.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a metallic frame having two sides adapted to form guides for a roll of material and having a bearing integral with and stamped from the material of one of the sides and comprising two members which project therefrom and serve to hold the other side substantially parallel thereto.

4-. A reel comprising a frame bent so as to form two opposed sides one of which comprises two members having overlapping ends and each provided with an aperture therein, a bearing having two members formed in tegral with one of the sides and projecting outward therefrom so as to extend through the apertures in the ends of the members of the other side and bent so as to hold the sides in their proper relative position, said frame having apertures at its ends whereby it may be held to a suitable support, and a roll serving to hold a metallic tape between the sides of the frame and rotatably held on the members of the bearin 5. A reel comprising a frame formed of a single metallic strip bent so as to form two opposed sides one of which comprises two members having overlapping ends, a bearing having two members formed integral with one of the sides and projecting outward I therefrom so as to engage the ends of the members of the other side and bent so as to hold the sides in their proper relative position, and a roll adapted to support a metallic tape between the sides of the frame and r0- tatably held on the members of the bearing.

A reel comprising a frame formed of a single metallic strip bent so as to form two opposed sides one of which comprises two members having overlapping ends and each provided with an aperture therein, a bearing having two members formed integral with one of the sides and projecting outward therefrom so as to extend through the apertures in the ends of the members of the other side and bent so as to hold the sides in their proper relative position, said frame having apertures at its ends whereby it may be held to a suitable support, and a roll adapted to support a metallic tape between the sides of the frame and rotatably held on the members of the bearing.

7. As an article of manufacture, a device or the character described comprising a meallic frame made of a single strip having two sides adapted to form guides for a roll of material and having a bearing integral with and stamped from the material of one of the sides and which projects therefrom and serves to hold the other side substantially parallel thereto.
