Specification ofLetters Patent.
Pa.te nted Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed. November 20, 1908. Serial No. 468,538.
To all whom it may concern;
to it known that. we, EDGAR RHODES, Wanner: Rnomcs, Jenn GEORGE Hms'r, thinner. PARKER, and JOHN MONTGOMERY 'lavnnzvon, residing, respectively, at Scholes, near Leeds, at Leeds, at,Kirkstall, near Leeds, at Pudsey, near Leeds, and at Leeds,
all in the county of York, England, and all subjects of the King of Great Britain, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Displaying Advertisements, and of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device, as hereinafter described, to be used as a sandwich board for displayinga number of advertisements in succession.
The device, according to this invention, consists of a casing in which are mounted two or more rollers carrying an endless belt or band provided with a number of advertisements to be displayed, which rollers are driven so as to cause the endless band to be traveled intermittently and thus display the advertisements in succession at the face or exhibition side of the casing, the desired periodic movement of the endless band being etfected by intermittently rotating one of the rollers through the medium of gear wheels driven by a coiled-spring, said spring being wound up through the medium of a ratchetwhecl mechanism actuated by the leg or walking-action of the person carrying the device, while a double-pawl or escapement' mechanism is provided for automatically releasing the spring by which the rotation of the gear wheels is effected.
Two or more of the above described casings may be carried by a single person, the leg-action of the latter being employed to actuate the/mechanism of all the devices simultaneously.
in order that our invention may be clearly understood, we will proceed to describe the same with reference to the example of construction shown in the accoi'npanying drawings, in which similar nun'ibers of refercncc indicate like parts in all the figures; wherein t Figures 1 :ind 2 are respectively a part sectional front elevation and a side elevation of a sandwich board device constructed ac- :ording to our invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are rcs 'iectively a. part sectional side elevation and a back elevation of, a portion of the same device, drawn to an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation, drawn to a reduced scale, showing two of the devices combined and fitted with a'single leg-operated lever adapted to actuate the two mechanisms sinnilta-neously.
In the drawings, and particularly with reference to Figs. 1 to 4, the! device consists of a rectangular vertical casing 1 having an aperture 2 formed in the front face thereof and being provided with upper and lower rollers 3-, 4 respectively mounted on shafts 5, 6, which rollers 3, 4 are geared togetlier by chains 7 passing around chainwheels 8 and carry an endless band 9 for the reception of a number of advertisements, the tension of the chains 7 and endless band roller shaft; 6 in spring-retained bearings 10.
Outside the casing 1 and on one end of the shaft 5 of the upper roller 3 is fixed a spur pinion 11 which gears with a spur wheel 12 loosely mounted on an independent shaft 13 carried by a fixed bracket 14, to which shaft 13 is attached the inner end of a coiled spring 15 situated within a box 16 attached to the loosely mounted spur wheel 12, to whichbox 1t; the other or outer end of the spring 15 is attached. The spur wheel 12 is provided with .a stop.17 which normally rests against or engages with a double-pawl 18 pivoted on a stud. '19 carried by the bracket 14, this double pawl 18 acting as an escapement while on the shaft 13 is fixed a ratchet-wheel 20 adapted to be rotated, so
'as to wind up the spring 15, by a pawl 21 carried on an arm 22 pivoted upon the shaft 13 through the medium of a rod 23 actuated by the leg orwalkmg-actlon of the person carrying the device, a stationary pawl 34 being provided for the purpose of preventing the backward rotation of the ratchet wheel 20 between the actuating strokes of the arm 22. This ratchet-wheel 20 is formed for a distance equal to the length of a single (it played in shown courtloinetl so to be carried a single pe son, the leg-action ot the y latter being employed to actuate the nleehanism of both devices siin! ltz neot. ly, through the nietliun'i' flonblerncled pivoted hellcrank lever whose lower entl is bifurcated so as to engage one of the person carrying he said device l tat we claim as our invention and desireto secure in! letters Patenti' 1 tl toe to be used as a sandwich board l e; olaying a niniber of advertisements in sueeeesion, eonsletinrg in a casing, rollers, an etulle banal pane 5 over said roller$ and proritletl with a plurality of atl .'ertiselitQlltS. aiulnieane ntlapterl fr he actuated by the walking movement of a person carrying, the (lhiice for intermittently shifting the euoless hand to cause the mlvertinenlents to snreession at the exhibition 1 the cash rant teed. as a santlwien bonrtl (mp1 the; a number o advertisements in some-"hon, eensistl 1 a n r i easi rollers, an endless 'bant'l pane e; ever sail rollers antl proriiletl with plurality advertisements, a gear wh el eoni'ieeterl to one of the roller at second gear Wheel meshing with the :jo esnid gear wheel a coiled sprin adapted to turn the said second gear wheel, *atehet wheel mechanism atlaptetl to be actuated by the walking movement of a person carrying' the device for Winding nnitl coiled spring and an escapenient ineehanisnn for automatically and periodically releasin the eoilecl spring so as to cause the endless hantl to be shifted intermittently 'oclit'ally ruleaninp; the spring); by whit-h the and an tlihplay the :lt'lY'UlllSOIHODl'S in sucrossion at the exhibition side of the easing.
