snm-GUARD.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application led April 16, 1908. Serial No. 427,477.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DEAN, of
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shin-Guards, &c., of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to guards or pads which are used by players in foot ball and other games to protect parts of the body, such as the Shins and knees.
Devices of this character usually comprise inner and outer members connected to form a pocket in which padding or cushioning material is placed. Heretofore the said members have been permanently connected to form a permanently closed pocket, no provision being made for varying the amount of padding material. y
This invention has for its object to enable a shin guard, or other like device, used by players in `foot-ball and other games, to be padded to any extent required or desired by the user. Ordinarily a shin guard is composed of layers of cloth connected at inter vals by parallel lines 4or stitching to form longitudinal pockets, in which are inserted flexible stiffening rods of rattan or other like material, the layers of cloth forming the inner side of the guard being usually provided with a permanent padding, whichis a permanent part of the device. A shin guard constructed in accordance with my invention, is formed as a pocket, the outer side or member of which contains the stitfening rods, while the inner member is more flexible, a space being provided between the two members, into which padding material may be inserted by the user, and from which ,it may be removed, the two members of the pocket being separably connected, either en-` tirely around their edges, or along a Sullicient extent of the edges to permit the insertion and removal of padding material.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, and representing my invention embodied in a shin guard, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the guard.
Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
he same characters of reference indicate the same parts in all the gures.
In the drawings a and l) represent the two vgeneral parts or members of my improved shin guard, these parts forming the sides'of an intermediatespace c, adapted to detachably hold padding material. The outer part a, as here shown, is composed of cloth layers 5 5 united at intervals by parallel lines '6 of stitches to form longitudinal pockets for the reception of stieningstrips 7. The inner part b is or may be composed of outer and inner cloth layers 8 and 9, between which isl permanently conined, suitable padding material 10, or, if desired, the said padding material may be omitted. The Acloth layers of each part are preferably united at the margins of the parts by binding strips 12 of leather or other suitable material stitched to thecloth layers.
13 13 represent eyelets inserted in the marginal portions of the parts a and Z), each part being preferably provided with eyelets eX- tending along each of its edges, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the two parts may be connected by a lacing cord 14 extending around the entire margin of the device, and separably connecting the two parts, although, if desired, the parts a and b may be permanently connected along portionsV of the margins, the eyelets and the connecting cord being applied to the remaining portions, the obj ect beino to permit the user of the pad'to insert suita le padding material in the space c, and conline said material therein, the inserted padding material being removable at the pleasure of the user. When the padding material has been inserted, it is confined by tying the ends of the cord, as indicated at 15.
16 16 represent the usual straps which are employed to secure the guard to the wearers leg.
I claim:
A shin guard or pad composed of an outer part provided with longitudinal stiliening tinnons pocket'y extending from end to end of the guard, and adapted to recelve n cuslnon bnc-lung all parte of the Sllfemng rods.
rods:7 and an inner part of exble construetion, the Said parte: being independent of each other, and provided with marginal eyelets, and e laping cord engaged with said ln testimony whereof l have nllxed my 5 eyelets, and adaped to detao'hably connect sgnal'nre, in presence of two Witnesses.
