METAL-RIPPING TOOL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Ripping Tools, of which the following is a specification.
It frequently happens in electrical, and other,work that the metal pipe used as a conduit for containing the conductors, must be open to give access to the interior for the purpose of repairs, or for other reasons. The opening up of the pipe by the usual method of chiseling out sections is laborious and expensive.
The object of my said invention is to provide a tool by which this work can be readily and rapidly accomplished and at comparatively small expense, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a section of metal pipe as it appears when being ripped open by the use of one of my said tools, Fig. 2 a top or plan view of the tool, a portion of its handle being broken away, and, Fig. 3 a side elevation thereof.
In said drawings the portion marked A represents the pipe and B the tool. The pipe shown is intended to be of metal such as steel, wrought iron, or copper, or any metal that can be cut and rolled. It may be a conduit for electric wires, or used for any other purpose.
The tool B consists of a handle having a jaw b on its forward end bent downwardly as shown in Fig. 3, and having its top face formed with sharp edges and with transverse serrations, or teeth, the points of which are adapted to engage the strip of metal to be ripped out and also lend a cutting action to the edge of the jaw. It is of a width substantially equal to the opening it is desired to make in the pipe. Two other jaws b and b are rigidly bolted one to each side of the shank of the tool by means of bolts 6 and b and are so arranged in relation to the jaw b that a sufhcient space will be afforded between the jaw b on one side and the jaws l) and b on the other to permit them to embrace the thickness of the metal. Their faces are likewise serrated, or formed with teeth, the points of Specification of Letters Patent.

which project toward the rear of the jaw, or at an angle to engage the metal on each side of the'opening and hold against the strain of the work. The faces of said jaws b and b are also somewhat rounded to form a wider opening between the aws at their outer ends, and also afford a curved bearing for said jaws upon the surface of the pipe, to permit them to roll slightly on said pipe during the operation.
In operation, the end of the pipe is inserted between the jaws of the tool as indicated in Fig. 1, and the operator by raising the handle upwardly starts to rip out a section a of the pipe which, by reason of the rolling motion of the tool, operates to curl or roll said section up over the head of the tool, out of the way, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the pipe is to be opened at a point between its ends it will be necessary to chisel an opening sufiicient to insert the point of the jaw 7) before the operation with the tool can be started.
By the use of said tool any pipe of ordinary size, made of such material as can be out, can be readily and quickly opened with comparatively little labor and expense. Metal articles other than pipes can likewise be ripped by its use, if desired, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A metal-ripping tool comprising a handle having a single rigid jaw formed with a serrated face with cutting edges and two rigid jaws arranged a distance from and opposed to said single aw and in planes each side of, and approximately parallel with, the edges of said. single jaw, said opposed jaws being also formed with serrated faces, substantially as set forth.
2. A metal-ripping tool comprising a handle carrying a single rigid jaw with a face of approximately the width of the opening it is desired to make in the metal and formed with transverse engaging and cutting serrations in its face, and two rigid aws with their faces opposed to the face of said single jaw and formed with transverse serrations formed to extend at an angle to hold against the strain of the work, substantially as set forth.
3. A metal-ripping tool comprising a han dle having a single rigid ripping jaw of a l width approximately corresponding to the width of the opening to be made in the metal and two rigid jaws arranged one on each side of said single jaw with their faces opposed to the face of said single jaw, said faces being formed with serrations formed to hold against the strain of the work, substantially as set forth.
4. A metal-ripping tool comprising a handle having a single rigid ripping and two rigid jaws with their faces opposed to and a distance from said single j aw and arranged on each side thereof, said faces being curved and formed with holding surfaces formed to hold against the strain of the work, substantially as set forth.
5. A metal ripping tool comprising a ma dle having a rigid ripping jaw and rigid jaws with their faces opposed to and a distance from said ripping jaw and arranged on each side thereof with their faces formed with holding surfaces adapted to hold the work 3 stantially as set forth.
