BURIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed Hay 23, 1908. Serial No. 434,507.
Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Vaults, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to burial vaults, and my invention aims to provide a novel vault constructed of a plurality of interlocking sections adapted to be sealed or connected together to provide a vermin andwaterproof vault having durable and lasting ualifications. To this end, l have devise a vault that can be easily made of composite slabs or sections, said slabs or sections being made either of glazed sewer clay, re clay, cement i vault, as best shown m F1g.3 of the drawings.
or a similar material. The slabs or sections are made of such a size as to be easily handled and connected together-to provide a vault capable of with external pressure.
The detail constructionentering'into my invention will be presently described and then specically pointed out in the appended claim.
ln the drawings -Figure 1 is a longitudi nal sectional view of a vault constructed in accordance with my invention, FigQ is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
- My vault consists of a bottom orbase, side walls, end walls, and an arched roof or cover. The bottom or-base comprises three slabs or sections 1, 2 and 3, the lower transverse edges 'of the section 1 having flanges 4 overlapped by flanges, carried by the adjoining transverse upper edges of the slabs or sections 2 and 3. These lap joints are made secure by cement 6 or similar sealing material. The Slabs 1, 2 and 3 have their lower longitudinal edges provided with flanges 7, while the outer transverse edges oi' the slabs or sections 2 and 3 are provided with flanges 8.
Secured upon the longitudinal flanges 7 of `the bottom or base are side walls, each wall comprising two slab's or sections 9 4having interlocking tongue and groove jointing edges 10 secured Vtogether by cement or a similar material 11. Cement 12 is also employed for securing the lower edges of the side walls to the base orbottom of the vault. The flanges 8 of the base or bottom sup'- standing considerable port end walls 13, the vertical edges of said walls being protected with lianges 14 adapted to fit in grooves 15 provided therefor at the outer ends of the sectionsQ of the side walls; cement or similar material 16 being employed to retain the end walls in engagement with the side walls` The end walls of the vault are of a greater height than the side walls, and have their upper ends rounded to assist in supporting an arched roof or cover.
The arched roof or cover comprises three arch-shaped sections or slabs 17, 18 and 19, these slabs or sections having lap joints secured by cement similar to the lap ioints of the bottom or base of the vault. The longitudinal edges of the roof or cover are provided with depending flanges 20 adapted to lit against the inner upper edges of the side walls, when the roof or cover rests upon the The slabs or sections 17 and 19 of the roof or cover are also flanged, as at 21 to engage the inner upper edges of the Vend walls, and after the vault has received the coflin or casket, the reef or cover can be secured to the vault at its adjoining edges by cementvor a similar material.
It is apparent from the foregoing description that l have devised a burial vault consisting of comparatively few parts rigidly connected together to provide a durable vault that will exclude all matter and protect the contents thereof ad inynitam.
Wvhilein the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated a preferred form of construction embodying the invention, I' desire it to be understood that the elements therein may be varied er changed as to the shape, proportion and exact manner of assemblage, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is :e
A vault embodying a bottom, side walls, end walls, and an arched cover, said bottom comprising flanged sections having lap jointed confronting edges, said sections having their outer lower vedges flanged, said side walls comprising sections adapted to rest` upon the longitudinal flanges of said bottom, said s1de wall sections having therebetween los tongue and grooved jointed edges to 'interlock the side wall sections together, said side wall sections having their vertical confrontlng edges grooved, end walls mounted upon the end anges of said bottom and having I the inner upper edges oi the said side Weils Vertical flanges for engaging in the grooves and the said end Wells, and cement for seof said side Wall sections whereby the end curing the tongue sections together and for sections are locked to the side Well sections, i securing the bottom, side walls, end Wallsv i 5 said end Wall sections being ofv a" reater Iand cover together. y hei ht than said side Wall sections andy aving In testimony whereof I affix my signature their upper ends rounded, said arched cover in the presence of two Witnesses. comprising sections edaptedto rest upon JOHN'DAVID lFOWLER. said side walls and said end Walls, said cover A Witnesses:
Cil
10 sections having lap jointed edges, depending FUI. CROSBIE,
flanges carried by said sections for. engaging DANIELA. CLARK.
