LAVATORY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 14, 1909.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909. Serial No. 472,308.
To (LZZUJll/OTIL it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER S. BOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lavatories, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to toilet apparatus, and has for its object to provide an improvement over the form of lavatory stand generally termed a Soinnoe.
An important object of this device is to provide a basin having one-half of the usual edge flange cut away in such a manner as to present trunnions spaced from the diametrical axis of the disposed within a circular opening 111 a table portion and be tipped by means of its flange to empty contents of the basin into a receptacle therebeneath without the necessity for lifting the basin.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specificatiom'and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views. Figure l is a front view of the device in closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in open position, Fig. 3 is a side view of the device, Fig. l. is a top view of the bowl, Fig. 5 is a side view of a modified form of the bowl.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a stand comprising four uprights 1O carrying three vertically spaced platforms numbered 11, 12, and 13 respectively, the first of which is carried at the summit of the uprights 10. The space between the two lower platforms 12 and 13 is inclosed on three sides by suitable walls, and the forward side is provided with a suitable closure 14 engaged to one of the uprights l0 and arranged to latch against the opposite one. A com partment is thus formed suitable to receive a receptacle as shown. The upper platform 11 is provided with a concentric circular opening 15, the purpose of which will be subsequently indicated.
Disposed within the opening 15, there is a rim, so that the device basin 20 similar in shape to the usual form of porcelain basin with the exception that the upper edge flange or lip portion 21 is entirely removed for slightly less than onehalf of its rim circumference as shown at 22, presenting shoulders or trunnions 23 formed at opposite sides of the basin. The flange or lip 21 of the usual type extends from trunnion to trunnion on the opposite side of the basin. It will l e noted that the point at which the trunnions are located is spaced beyond the center of the bowl oppositely of the flange 21, so that the tendency of the bowl will always be to remain in horizontal position to retain fluid. Disposed upon the platform 12, beneath the bowl, there is a receptacle 25 for receiving waste water after being used in the basin. It will be seen that the receptacle 25 is in position to receive fluid which may be emptied from the bowl when turned upon its trunnion. The dumping operation is accomplished by simply pressing down: 'dly upon the side of the bowl opposite the flange, and engaging the fingers beneath the flange 21 to lift that side of the basin. As shown a pitcher may be set within the bowl when not in use.
in Fig. 5, there is shown a modified form of the bowl, in which enlarged trunnions have been formed at the radial end portions of the flange.
that is claimed is In a discharging lavatory, the combination with a top portion having a circular opening, of a basin disposed within said opening and of smaller exterior diameter at the top of its side walls, said basin having an outwardly extending flange around its upper ed e, the ends of said flange on opposite sides of the basin extending to points somewhat beyond and equally distant from a line drawn diametrically of said basin and being rounded to form trunnions, said flange normally resting on said top at the edge of said circular opening to support the basin therein, whereby the basin may be tipped up :pon said trunnions to discharge its contents, and a waste receptacle in position to receive such discharge.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
