Description

Dec. 6, 1966 M. G. MEHILOS ATTACHMENTS FOR SINKS Filed March 30, 1964 FlG.l.
United States Patent Ofiice 3,289,218 Patented Dec. 6, 1966 3,289,218 ATTACHMENTS FOR SINKS Michael G. Mehilos, 2353 Central, Alton, llll. Filed Mar. 30, 1964, Ser. No. 355,553 (Ilaims. (Cl. 4-206) This invention relates to improvements in attachments for sinks. More particularly, this invention relates to improvements in drink disposers.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an improved drink disposer.
In restaurants, taverns, and other places where potables are served, the problem of disposing of the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses exists. Because laws, ordinances and regulations relating to health frequently require restaurants, taverns and other places to maintain an antiseptic solution in one basin of their sinks and to maintain rinsing water in the other two basins of their sinks, and because most sinks do not have more than three basins, many restaurants, taverns and other places do not have a convenient way of disposing of the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses. The attendants in many restaurants, taverns, and other places empty the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses into buckets or other receptacles, and then periodically empty 'thOSe buckets or other receptacles. However, the use of buckets or other receptacles is far from ideal, because the liquids poured into those buckets or receptacles can emit odors which can pervade the adjacent areas. Further, because the buckets or receptacles are usually set below the levels of the tops of the sinks, and because it would be tiring for the attendants to recurrently bend down and pour the contents of the incompletelyemptied glasses into those buckets or receptacles, attendants have been known to tilt the open ends of the drinking glasses downwardly toward the buckets or receptacles and try to guide the contents of those drinking glasses into those buckets or receptacles. Further, at times when the level of activity is high, attendants have been known to fail to empty the buckets or receptacles promptly, and have thus let those buckets or receptacles overflow. As a result, the portions of the floors adjacent the buckets or receptacles frequently are wet, slippery and unsightly. Consequently, it would be desirable to provide a device which would make the use of buckets or other receptacles unnecessary, and which could direct the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses into the drain facilities of restaurants, taverns, and other places. The present invention provides such a device; and it is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a device which can direct the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses into the drain :facilities of restaurants, taverns, and other places.
The device, which is provided by the present invention to direct the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses into the drain facilities of restaurants, taverns, and other places, constitutes a sink stopper and drink disposer. That sink stopper and drink disposer can be mounted within either of the basins which contain the rinsing water, and it will isolate that rinsing water from the contents of the incompletely-emptied drinking glasses. That sink sopper and drink disposer has a large funnellike upper portion which is readily accessible to the attendant, which is large enough to receive the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses even though those drinking glasses contain ice cubes, and which is large enough to receive the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses even though the attendant may be erratic in aiming the contents of those incompletely-emptied drinking glasses toward that portion. As a result, the sink stopper and drink disposer provided by the present invention can simply and directly guide the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses into the drain facilities of restaurants, taverns, and other places. It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a sink stopper and drink disposer which has a large funnellike upper portion into which the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses can be directed.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention should become apparent from an examination of the drawing and accompanying description.
In the drawing and accompanying description, a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown and described, but it is to be understood that the drawing and accompanying description are for the purpose of illustration only and do not limit the invention and that the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing,
FIG. 1 is a broken, sectional view through a basin of a sink, and it shows one embodiment of sink stopper and drink disposer that is made in accordance with the principles and teachings of the present invention,
FIG. 2 is a bottom view of part of the sink stopper and drink disposer of FIG. 1 and FIG. 3 is a sectional View through the sink stopper and drink disposer of FIG. 1, and it is taken along the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 generally denotes one of the basins of a sink of the type which is customarily used in restaurants, taverns, and other places. That basin has a drain opening 12, which will be suitably connected to the drain or sewer facilities of the restaurant, tavern, or other place; and that drain opening will usually be spaced just an inch or so from the rear wall of that basin. The basin 10 and the drain opening 12 are of standard and usual construction and are not, per se, part of the present invention.
The numeral 14- generally denotes one embodiment of sink stopper and drink disposer that is made in accordance with the principles and teachings of the present in vention. That sink stopper and drink disposer has a large funnel-like upper portion, and it has a tubular discharge end 16. A flange 18, in the form of a flat plate, is secured to the discharge end 16 at a point above the bottom of that discharge end; and that flange projects horizontally outwardly from that discharge end. An external helical screw thread 25 is formed on the discharge end 16 below the flange 18; and a frusto-conical base 22, in the form of an internally-threaded sleeve, is threaded onto that screw thread. The outer surface of the base 22 is dimensioned to fit snugly within the upper part of the drain opening 12 of the basin l0; and the engagement between that base and that drain opening is intended to be sufliciently intimate to prevent leakage of water between that base and that drain opening.
A deflector 24 is secured to the upper edge of the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14-; and that deflector extends downwardly and inwardly from that upper edge. That deflector is an annulus of generally frusto-conical configuration, and the small diameter portion of that deflector is at the bottom thereof. A number of openings 26 are provided in the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14; and those openings are close to the upper edge of that portion. As shown by FIG. 1, the openings 26 are located above the level of the bottom edge of the deflector 24; and those openings are large enough to permit water to flow freely through them. The sink stopper and drink disposer 14 can be made of metal, plastic, hard rubber, or the like.
As indicated particularly by FIG. 1, the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 is almost as tall as the basin 10. This is important because it enables the basin 10 to be kept substantially filled with clean rinsing water; and it also is important in permitting that sink stopper and drink disposer to be made large enough to accommodate a large number of ice cubes.
The frusto-conical base 22 of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 can be disposed within the drain opening 12 of the basin 10 and can coact with that drain opening to provide a liquid-tight closure for that basin.
That base and the flange 18 maintain that sink stopper and drink disposer in upright position.
Once the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 has been mounted within the basin 10, that basin can be filled with clean, rinsing water; and the setting of the faucet for that basin can then be adjusted to permit additional water to pass into that basin to keep the rinsing water clean, despite the fact that the said water is to be used for rinsing glasses. The supplying of water to the basin 10 on a continuous basis will not cause that basin to overflow, because the excess water will pass inwardly through the openings 26 and then pass downwardly through the funnel-like upper portion and the discharge end 16 to the drain for the sink. In this way, a continuing supply of fresh Water can be added to the basin 10, and the excess water can be passed directly to the drain for the sink.
The diameter of the discharge end 20 is large enough to permit liquid to drain freely from the sink stopper and drink disposer 14; but that diameter is small enough to enable that discharge end to intercept and hold ice cubes and pieces of fruit. Those pieces of fruit can, from time to time, be lifted out of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 and placed in a suitable container for garbage.
Where desired, a screen 28 can be removably set within the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14. That screen has an annular frame 30; and that frame is generally frusto-conical in configuration, but it has the upper edge thereof curved outwardly and downwardly, as shown by FIG. 1. The upper edge of the frame 30 of the screen 28 will overlie the upper edge of the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14, and will prevent accidental separation of that screen from that sink stopper and drink disposer. The interstices of the screen 28 will be large enough to permit liquid to drain freely from that screen but will be small enough to enable that screen to intercept and hold ice cubes and pieces of fruit. Those pieces of fruit can, from time to time, be removed by lifting out and emptying the screen 28. That screen is particularly useful in restaurants, taverns, and other places where a large volume of potables is served.
In using the sink stopper and drink disposer 14, the attendant can easily direct the contents of incompletelyemptied drinking glasses into the funnel-like upper portion of that sink stopper and drink disposer; and that funnel-like upper portion is large enough to enable it to continue to receive the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses even though those glasses contain ice cubes. Further, that funnel-like upper portion is large enough to receive the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses even though the attendant may be erratic in aiming the contents of those incompletely-emptied drinking glasses toward that funnel-1ike upper portion. The contents of the incompletely-emptied drinking glasses will pass downwardly through the funnel-like upper portion and then will pass downwardly through the discharge end 16 into the drain. The deflector 24 will keep the contents of incompletely-emptied drinking glasses from reaching, and passing through, the openings 26'even if those contents are directed toward those openings. As a result, there is virtually no possibility of the contents of the incompletelyemptied drinking glasses getting into the clean, rinsing water in the basin 10. Instead, those contents will be guided downwardly through the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 and then permitted to fall from the discharge end 16 into the drain facilities of the restaurant, tavern, or other place.
The frusto-conical base 22 and the flange 18 coact to fixedly hold the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 in upright position even though the center of mass of that sink stopper and drink disposer is displaced to one side of the drain opening 12. This is important because it enables that sink stopper and drink disposer to be made so large that an attendant cannot miss it, as he is emptying the incompletely-emptied drinking glasses. Further, it enables that sink stopper and drink disposer to have a funnel-like upper portion which is so large that it will not fill up in use. While ice cubes can tend to accumulate within the funnel-like upper portion of the sink stopper and drink disposer 14, the warmth of the rinsing water which surrounds and directly contacts the exterior of that funnel-like upper portion will tend to warm that funnellike upper portion and thereby tend to melt those ice cubes. Further, the rinse water that flows inwardly through the openings 26 will directly engage, and thereby help melt, some of those ice cubes.
While a generally conical, funnel-like, upper portion is shown in the drawing, the side of that upper portion which confronts the rear of the basin 10 can be flattened. Where that is done, that funnel-like upper portion will be able to accommodate even more ice cubes.
The screw thread 20 on the exterior of the discharge end 16 is desirable because it permits bases 22 of different sizes and shapes to be used. Consequently, the sink stopper and drink disposer 14 can be adapted for use with drain openings of different sizes and shapes by merely selecting a base 22 of the required size and shape.
If desired, an external shoulder could be provided on the discharge end 16 above the level of the flange 18. With such a shoulder, the flange 18 could be formed as a removable washer and could be held solidly against that shoulder by the tightening of the base 22 on the screw thread 211. Also, if desired, a resilient disc could be held in abutting relation with the under face of the flange 18, as by interposing that disc between that flange and the base 22.
Whereas the drawing and accompanying description have shown and described one preferred embodiment of the present invention, it should be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the form of the invention without affecting the scope thereof.
