SHARPENIN G APPARATUS.
Specicatonof Letters Patent. Application led February 21, A19138.
Patented img. s., 190.9; serial No. 416,988. v
-Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL l. .OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Woburn, in the county of Middlesex `and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in whichthe followingdescription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings'- re resenting like parts. Y i
his invention relates to a novel shar Yening apparatus Vor attachment.v for use on elt knife splitting machines. i
The invention has for its object t provide pparatus with which the belt knife is maintained inefficient. condition. vFor this purpose, I employ a grind# ing or sharpeningstone or device for acting on the edge of the belt knife, and positively rotate saidf device by a driving member,
which intui'n is frictionally driven by the belt knife'.v i
The invention further consists in roviding a simple and efficient support for t Pro- vision is also made for permitting the driving Vlarities in the belt knife.
These and other features of this'invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts in section Aof an apparatus embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a detail in elevation'looking toward the left in Fig. 1. Fig 3a partial elevation and'section of a modication `to be referred to, and Fig. 4, a detail in plan of the a paratus shown in Fig. 8.
Re erring to Fig. 1, a represents the belt or band knife of a leather s litting machine, which may be of'any su'itab e or desired constructionandwhich is not herein shown, as it is unnecessary for a full understanding of the presentinvention, which relates more particularly t0 ap iaratus for sharpening the cutting edge of a knife a.
The apparatus referred to, consists essentially of a inding, whetting or other sharp'- ening `disk which may be of stone or metal and is ,secured to a shaft c by a key d or otherwise, said stone being designed to engage the side of the knife a, shown inthe `present instance as the underside, and having a central I cavity e for clearance.
The disk b may be referred ito as a whetstone, as in practice,'it
Sharpening Apparatus, of"
e sharpening device and its driving member.
will generally be used as a supplement to `the `ordinary grinding Wheels, not shown, but splitting which are common to belt-knife machines.
The present invention has for its object to positively rotate the whetstone b, so as to subie'ct one side of the cutting edge of the knife to the action of stone which is positivel drivenby a driving disk or member f, which is secured to the shaft c to rotate therewith by the key d or otherwise, and which is driven by`frictional Contact with theo posite side of the knife a. The driving dis or member f is pro-vided on its underside with a beveled surface g, which is engaged by the up er surface of the knife a, which lat'ter'is` inclined with relation to the contactingfsuris yieldingly held in engagement withtheupper surface of the knife by a helical s ring li., i
encircling the shaft c between the dis f and a nut .i on said shaft, and the whetstone may also be yieldingly engaged with the opposite side of the knife by the helical s ring encircling the shaft c between the w ietstone b and a nut k. The shaft c is mounted to turn in arms m, n, whichmay be separate from each other andpivoted between. the arms o, p, of a fork attached to a supporting rod r, which is provided at its lower end with screwthreads 10 adapted t0 engage a nut 12 located in a transverse slot 13 formed in the upper end of aphollow standard 14. pivoted arms m, n, may be secured to the orked arms o, p, in fixed relation thereto by thuinbenuts 16, 1 7 engaging the threaded end of the pivot pins 19, 20 for said arins. The arms m, n are capable of being turned after their clam ing nuts 16, 17 are loosened, so as to adjust t e whetstone l) and the driving disk f to the knife a, and while said arms The are thus loose, they are retained in engaffe- C ment with the ends of the shaft by a helical spring 21, which is attached to one arm asn, and toa rod 22 extended through the other arm m and provided with an adjusting nut 23. `The supporting rod 10 may be adjusted in its hollow standard 14 by the nut 12 and mayA then be firmly fastened in its adjusted position by the set screw '25. may be provided with turning points 26 attached to the nuts i, c, and which enter sockets'27 in the armsm, n, as shown in Fig. 1, or it maybe mounted to turn on centering .screws 30 as shown in Fig. 3, wherein said screws are shown as extended through the ,y side or snrfaeeolfl the knife, a rotatable shaft on which saidfstoneis mounted to rotate lfor the yoke. fed into the f in contact with one side or surface ofthe and` arranged on saidl shaft togngage the armsm, a, Whieh in `this case` are joined to?! gether y y y 33 extended substantially at righty angles. to`
in` the forni of a yoke having an arm the yoke at" its center. "The arm 33 `is `passed l between ears 34 on the head of the rod r and is secured 'thereto by the nut 35 which en gages the threaded end of the pivot pin 36 The threaded rod r is extend hollow standard 14, adjusted therein by the nut 12 and secured in its adjusted position vby the set screw 25.
In both Figs.' l and 3, the Whetstone t as shown bears against the underside of a collar or ange 37 on the shaft c and rests upon a collar 38 keyed to the said shaft and provided with pins 39, which enter holes in the underside of the stone. fg.
In operation, the sharpening device isad-y justed to the belt knife after the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3, with the driving disk knife and thestone b in Contact with the opposits side or surface of said knife. As a result, the traveling knife turns the .disk f,
which in turn rotates the shaft c and the stone t, which latter is thus positively driven and .aets on the knife to maintain its cutting j edge in a most efficient condition. The driv` ing disk f and thestone `b are free to move opposite directions onthe shaft, to` eornpensate for any irregularities 4in the surfaces of the knife. i .-Claims..y
l. The combination with the belt knife of a leather splitting machine, of a sharpeningr device eomprisinga stone 'to engage kone therewith, a driving member ,for said stone mountedbn saidshaft to rotate therewith Asurfaee of he knife opbesite that with whieh saidstone `makes jeontaetfto cause f i driven by the said `stone to be; positiv y said knife, substantially asdsserihed. i. i* 2. in a sharpening device of the class de-Y scribed, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a
sharpening disk mounted thereon to rotate therewith,
said shaft to rotatetherewith, one of said parts being movable longitudinally on saidY shaft independently of the other and means to yieldingly force the movable member toward the other member, substantially as de scribed.` 1 f v-` 3. In a sharpening devise of the elfissdescribed, in combination,` a rotatable shaft, a
a driving member mounted on,
sharpening disk mounted thereon to rotate i therewith, a said shaft toY rotate therewith, both 'of said parte `being movable shaft, and `means to `yieldingly force said v partstoward each other, substantially as described.`
fl. In a sharpening device of the class described, in eombination,-`a rotatable shaft, a
sharpening member mounted thereon to ron tate therewith and provided `with a substantially central recess, a `driving member mounted on said shaft to rotatetherewith andprovidedwith a beveled surface adja driving. member mounted on' 6.0, longitudinally on said u cent to, said sharpening member and means to move said driving member longitudinally f v on saidshaft, with.al yaking fessura Sub 'Stfmluy SLS described. f
"In testimony whereof, l have signed iny name to` thisspecification in the presence ofV twosubscribing Witnesses. f e
