I Pat nt d-31111927, .1909.
Be it known that I, JAMES KiMsEY, af-
. citizen of the United. States, residing Philadelphia, in the county'of Philadelphia,
engagement.
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Paper Box'i' for Articles of Merchandise, ofwhic'h- Ihefollo'wingis a full and co npletespecification. I
'nvention-.j jrelates to that class of ceptacles which are provided for the pu pe f andling OIfdiSPIlSingSlhfllh quantities. such artieles as teas, coffees, eto.-, and' 'the-objectsof my present inventionare'to-provide'ascheal) paper box into which the article maybe placed. and securely and ti ghfly held orsea-led, and which box inust be destroyed-before the contents can be removed. a I
To the accomplishment of these'and other objects the invention consists in the provision of a box composed of a paper body having a bottom secured.thereto, and a closure forced into the top "ofthe paperbody a short distance below the-upper'edge thereof and securely held against removal/by engagementwith said paper body, whereby to remove said closure a part of the paper body" must be torn to release the same. The invention further consists in the par; tieular construction and arrangement of: parts constituting thedevice, all asherein-- after fully described in the following-specifieation, and more specifiallyset forth in the appended claim.
I41 the drawing, which frms part herea of: Figure 1 is' a perspective view of a paper i of Fig. 2.
box constructedin accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional viewthereof Fig. 3 is a plan viewflflFig. 4 is a side elevation,. showing the paper body of'the box torn.
.to release the-closure. Fig. 5 is'a sectional view illustratinganodi'fication of the-in vent1 on.' Fig; 6"1san enlarged detailed vlew Referring to said-. drawing, theletter: A designates the body of thebox, which is com-' posed ofpaper, and in the present instance is'shown as cylindrical and tapered slightly from top to bottom. "The shape of thebox may be chan ed however without sacrificing any of the a vantages of the invention. The 1 cylindrical body A is closed at oneend by means of the bottom a, as in Figs 1, 2 and 4,
' or'by means of the bottom c shown in Fig.5
top orclosure is forced into the box' the bur closure to 5; in the former instance thebottom being :made of tin and securedby being 'crimp'ed over thelower edge of the body, while in the latter construction the bottom comprises fa thick paper disk held in placeby frictional edge, the said cover or closure being of such size with relation. to the box as to fit snugly therein and when forced a short distance below the upper edge thereof cannot be removed 4 without destroying the box sufiiciently to indicate that it has been tampered with or opened. In stamping out this 010- sure or "tin top B a-slightbur, projecting outward as in Fig. 6, is left at the upper edge of the flange Z), so that when said tin willv enter or be embedded in the paper sides thereof andefi'eetually prevent sn'chtin top or closure frombeing withdrawn until it is. released. f Y
' In use it is intended nished to 'the consumer or packer with the 'tin top or closure removed, and after the removed without destroying either said top or the body of'the box. To remove the contents-it is only'necessary to tear away a art of -the paper body, as'shown'in Fig. 4, w ioh will allow. the tin top or closure to be grasped. I Thus by providing that the-box be destroyed inremoving the contents the that the'box be fur- -.artiole is .placed. in the box said tin top or. clo's ure .is' inserted and forced in and will flbind -snfiiciently -to prevent it from being purchaser of abox which is intact may be I sure that he is getting the original article.
It .will be noted that the tintop or closure is located -when applied a short distance below the upper'edgeof the paper body, and. this-is for the'purposeof-providini;
a sufli cient portion of the paper body a ove the permit the. time it!) egrasped in tearing the paper'bod In Fig; 5 a is proposedfthatjtheibottom .tanceabove the hweredge the be made of athiclripatper".disln'fwhich is introduced into the widen-ne'er thejtapered .1 body (J, and edgeid therein to short idis -f ase t e box is closed by a ga dwhi'bh thebodyin the usual manner." Inthiscase the bottom is put on last, and the disk becomes really the top, similar to the other, and in removing such top or disk a the paper side or body is torn as before.
As heretofore stated the box provides a very simple and economical means for dispensing such articles as teas, cofiee, spices, etc., and being tightly closed or sealed in the manner set forth they will not lose their strength.
The boxes of course can be made of any size, but 1t s contemplated to make them small to contain small portions of such articles as cofi'ees, teas, and cocoas suflieient for a single order. In such cases where thebox is to contain two articles which are to be kept apart until subsequently used together or mixed, provision is made therefor by 10- eating a partition midway the box, such partition being similar to the disk 0' in Fig. 5.-
Havmg thus descrlbed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination in a box, of a cylindrical flexible body portion of paper having a smooth interior surface, a cap snugly fitting the box and having an outwardly projecting flange, the outer edge of the flange being flared to form a bur at its extreme edge, the flange having an unbroken edge so that when the cap is forced into the body portion and beyond the end thereof the fiarc edge will enter the paper body preventing the cap being forced out and forming a t ght seal between the cap and the body of the box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have Sigllfitl my name to this specification in'the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. KIMSEY.
