Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Original application filed January 26, 1907, Serial No. 354,344. Divided and this application filed November 22,
1907, Serial No. 403,363.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MELVIN IIARTWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Signal Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signal devices for use in connection with movable lids, doors, etc. to indicate audibly the opening of the door or lid.
The invention constitutes a division of an application filed by me on Jan. 26, 1907, Serial No. 354,344 and subsequently issued as Patent No. 875,073, dated Dec. 31, 1907.
The invention is more particularly designed for use in connection with mail boxes such as are used uponthe doors of residences, and its object is to provide novel means whereby an alarm will be sounded every time the slot closure of the box is raised for the purpose of placing mail within the box.
Another object is to provide simple and eificient means for sounding the bell, said means being of inexpensive construction and capable of being readily applied to a door or other structure and connected to a part, the movement of which is to be signaled.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a section showing the present improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the alarm mechanism, the bell being removed but indicated by dotted lines.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, A designates a door and B designates a mail box connected thereto, said box being provided with a slot lid or closure 0 movably connected thereto in the usual or any preferred manner. An arm 20 extends downward from the lid and is ivotally connected to one end of a rod 21 slidably mounted in the door and extending beyond the in- Renewed March 11, 1909. Serial No. 482,830.
ner face thereof. This rod has its inwardly projecting portion waved or crimped as shown at 22, said waved portion extending through and being guided within a small aperture 23 formed within a rocking plate 24. This aperture intersects the longitudinal axis of the rocking plate. Trunnions 25 project from the ends of this plate and are j ournaled in ears 26 outstanding from a base plate 27. This base plate is secured to the inner face of the door and has an outstanding end portion 28 folded thereon and terminating in a stem 29 which is perpendicular to the plate 27. A bell 30 is secured to this stem and extends over base plate 27 and the parts connected thereto, the clapper 31 of the bell being arranged at one end of an arm 32 which extends from and is movable with the rocking plate 24.
It will be understood that when the lid is raised arm 20 will pull the rod 21 longitudinally so as to draw the waved portion 22 through the opening 23. This will cause the plate 24 to rock upon its trunnions and clapper 30 will be rapidly oscillated and will strike the bell so as to sound it. The occupants of the residence or ofiice will therefore be promptly. notified whenever the lid 0 is raised. A lid of this character can be used instead of a door bell should it be so desired.
Although the invention has been shown used in connection with the slot lid of a mail box it is to be understood that the same may be employed equally as well in connection with a door or any other swinging structure, the movement of which is to be signaled.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a supporting structure and a movable member connected thereto; of a signal device, a rocking plate supported adjacent thereto, a clapper movable With the plate, said plate having an orifice therein and intersecting the axis thereof, a waved rod slidable and guided within the orifice and disposed to rock the plate, and means operated by the movable member for reciprocating the rod.
2. The combination with a supporting structure and a movable member connected thereto; of a base plate having an integral outstanding stem, a bell mounted on the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as stem, ears integral with the base plate, a my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature 1G rocking plate j ournaled Within the ears and in the presence of two Witnesses.
having an opening therein a waved rod mov- I w H T able longitudinally through the opening to OIARLES MMVIN HARLWLLI" actuate the plate, means operated by the -Witnesses: movable member for reei roeating the rod, J. S. LUNGER, and a clapper carried by t e rocking plate. JOHN C. HUBER.
