Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 29, 1908. Serial No. 435,724.
the main frame so as to normally lie flush therewith, and a means whereby said supplemental frame may be raised to form a pillow.
It also comprises combinations of parts and details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
It is the object of my invention to provide a couch of the ordinary construction having a main rigid frame, and supporting legs, with a supplemental frame let into the side frames of the couch, so that it may normally lie flush and flat therewith, said frame being hinged to the main frame and capable of rising to an angle with the upholstered top portion of both parts, in a smooth continuation; and in conjunction with this head frame I employ a novel automatically operating device for retaining the head in its raised position. a
As shown in the drawing, A is the main frame of a couch consisting of side and end bars united together, the whole supported upon legs B in the usual manner for this class of couches. are each in a single piece, extending the full length, and they have portions near the head cut away so as to form offsets for the reception of the side bars 2 of a head frame. The side bars of this frame have a depth equal to the cut away portions of the main frame, and are hinged thereto as shown at 3 so that this frame may be raised or depressed about the hinges. Vhen depressed it lies in the cut away portion of the main frame, resting solidly upon the edges. Both parts The side bars of the couchof the couch thus constructed are upholstered in any usual or suitable manner, and when the couch is in its normal position, this upholstery extends continuously from end to end.
hen it is desired to form a pillow or raised portion, the head-piece 2 is turned upwardly about its hinges, and it will be seen that when thus upturned, the upholstery will be smooth and continuous, forming a gradual curve at the hinge oint 8. In order to hold this head portion in its raised posi- 7 tion, I have shown a bar or connection a having hinges 5 at each endwhich connect it with the cross-bar 2 of the head portion of the frame. The hinges 5 have spiral springs 6 surrounding the hinge pins, and the tension of these springs acts to normally force the lower leaf of thespring inwardly, the upper leaf being secured to the bar 2 with the hinge pins substantially on the line of meeting of the bars 2 and it. Thus when the upholstered head 2 is in a flat position, this bar lies just outside of the transverse head bar A of the main frame. .Vhen the head 2 is raised, this bar 4 slides upwardly until its lower edge is near the top of the head bar A. This bar A" has its upper edge cut away to form a shoulder or support into which the lower edge of the bar t falls, and the head is thus supported at the desired position. When the head is to be let down, it is only necessary to pull the part L outwardly, clear of the shoulder, and the head may be dropped to its normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A couch of the character described, having in combination a main frame with continuous sides, the upper edges thereof near the head being cut-away, a supplemental head frame, the side bars of which fit and normally lie flush in the cutaway portions of the main frame, the upper edges of the two being hinged together, a transverse main head bar having an outwardly presented offset and shoulder alon the upper edge, said supplemental head frame normally concealing said offset and shoulder, an extension across the head bar of the supplemental frame and spring hinges by which the top edge of said extension is connected with the bottom edge of the head bar whereby the lower edge of the extension is caused to move inward and engage with the offset or shoulder of the transverse head bar when the head frame is raised about its hinges.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand 1n presence of two subscrlblng witnesses.
