FARM- GATE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Application filed July 16, 1908. Serial No. 443,834.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL G. I-Invns, a citizen of .the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Jasper and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Farm Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in farm gates of the class which may be opened and closed from a distance, or with out alighting from a vehicle or from horseback, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of this invention Figure 1, is aplan view of this improved gate structure in closed position. Fig. 2, is a side view of the gate with the frame of the operating mechanism in section on the line 2-2, of Fig. 1.
The improved device comprises a supporting post, preferably formed fro-1n a section of gas pipe 10, and stepped in a concrete block 11, embedded in the ground, repre sented at 12. Erected adjacent to the post 10, and extending beyond the same at each side, is a frame composed of a plurality of vertical posts 13, spaced apart at suitable intervals and connected by a longitudinal head member 14, the post 10, being supported at its upper end from the head member 14, by a bracket 15.
The gate is preferably formed of a gas pipe frame having vertical end members 16, 17, and horizontal top and bottom members 18, 19, and one or more intermediate vertical members 20. t
The stationary post 10, is provided with two pairs of collars at 21, 22, oppositethe upper and lower edges of the gate, the end member 16, having eye bolts 23, 24, fitting around the post 10, between the collars 21- the eye bolts and collars thus constituting the hinges of the gate.
One of the posts 13, is utilized to receive the strand wires 25, of the fence, and erected at the opposite side of the gateway opening is a latch post 26, also having the strand wires of the fence connected thereto, as shown.
Swinging at 27, upon the gate member 20, is a latch bar 28, operating through a keeper 29, and detachably engaging its free end in a socket 30, on the post 26, and rising from the bar 28, is an arm 31, extending through a keeper 32, on the gate member 18. By this means the latch bar, when engaged with the socket 30, will hold the gate in closed position, and by applying a pulling force upon the arm 31, the latch bar will be released from the socket, as hereinafter explained.
Supported in hangers 33, upon the frame member 14, is a shaft 34, preferably formed of gas piping, and provided with transverse lever arms 35, 36, at the ends, the arm 35, having a pull cord or chain 37, and the arm 36, having a pull cord or chain 38, whereby the shaft may be oscillated. Connected at 39, 40, to the shaft 34, is a V shaped arm 41, and looped by an eye 42, in an aperture-in the upper end of the arm 31, is a rod 43,
coiled at 44, intermediate its ends around the bend of the member 41, and with its free end extending over one side portion of the member 41, and terminating in a loop 45, engaging beneath the adjacent portion of the member 41, as shown. By this arrangement a double lock action is produced, one by the lock and latch bar 28, by its engagement with the keeper 30, and again by the co-action of the members 41, 43, and 45, as the loop 45, effectually prevents any force applied to the gate to move it toward an open position, while at the same time any oscillating or rocking motion applied to the shaft 34, by either of its handles 35, or 36, willdepress the arm 41, and thus break the joint of the members at 45, and thus draw the gate into open position, the first movement of the arms 41, 43, being to re lease the latch bar 28, from the keeper 30.
lVhen a person approaches the gate either riding, driving or walking, a pull upon one of the draw cords 37, or 38, as the case may be, in one direction will first depress the arm 41, and then draw the arm 31, of the latch bar toward the post 10, and release the latch bar 28, from the keeper 30, the depression of the arm 41, uncoupling the loop 45, from the arm 41, and cause the further depression of the arm to draw the rod 43, toward the frame 13, 14, and thus open the gate. Then as the person passes through the gate a reverse pull upon the other cord 37, or 38, as the case may be, will reverse the motion and close and lock the gate. A brace rod 47, is connected at the ends respectively to the upper end of the post 10, and to the gate frame, and supports the gate, preventing it from sagging.
The improved device is simple in constructio-n, can be inexpensively manufactured, and applied to any size or construction of gate, and to gates employed in any of the various localities where devices of this class are usually employed.
'What is claimed as new is,
In an apparatus of the class described a hinge post, a gate swinging from said post, a supporting frame, a shaft mounted for oscillation upon said frame, means for oscillating said shaft, a lateral arm formed from a single piece bent into V shape and connected by its ends to said shaft, a rod pivoted at one end to said gate and coiled intermediate its ends around the arm of the shaft at its bend, and with a loop at its free end bearing beneath one member of the shaft arm.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
