PASSENGER-CAR.
No. senese.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Application filed August 21, 1908. SerarNo. 449,618.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it linown that l, ln'rnn M. KLING, ot Pittsburg, Northside, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania` a ritizen ofthe United ,L -States, have invented certain new and useful linproveinents in Passenger-(jars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reterence being had to the accompanyingV drawings` in which like characters refer to like parts, and in which# Figi-ire l is an end elevation of the seat structure in passenger car, showing also portions ot the car framing; Fig. 2, is a vertical section on the line '2-2, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line Ilml, Fig. l.
:in object of the present invention is to provide a seat structure of o'reaty sim licitv rigidity and strength or stitl'ness and at toe saine time retainingneatness in appearance.
Referring'now in detail to the drawings, i represents a portion otf the -oar undertraine7 2 a portion ot' the car side structure, 3 one ot a series of seat postspt the seat cross-bearers. Side struc lu're 2 and under structure l are connected by angles 5. Cross-bearers l slant dowmvardly toward and are riveted to side structure 2 by down wardly turned flanges '-tA. Cross-bearers t are also riveted to the upper ends of posts 3.
t3 is an intermediate sill connecting the upper ends of the several posts 3'.
T is an outer sill connecting` the outer ends ot cross-bea17ers` Li. Sills (l and 'T are both angular insertion. Sills (3 are connected to cross-bearers .4 by downwardly extendii'lg flanges el on crossbearers 4t.
8 is the usual seat end panel, ol' suitable shape, riveted to crosssbearers ft and through nieans of angles t? to the undertraine l.
linel S langjed vertically at its inner edge at the. side et the car. Angles 9 likewise support. the post 3, as they are riveted thereto.
10 is a reinforcing or finishing border vfor the panel 8, and consists in piping or tubing' split to receive the edge o'. panel 8, said piping' or tubing being riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the panel S.
il is a seat and seat-back guide casting to properly locate the forming abutments 12 is the seat and 13 1s seat and seat-back.
the seat-back.
M is the front panel of the seatstructure riveted to angles 6 and posts 3.
l5 isa wooden filler or side abutment forv the seat; 12. y
'ihrough -ineans of angles 9 and 5 theseat and' side structure is elevated above the horizontal plane of the underframe, so that a composition or cement {lnoringniay be applied and yet the seat structure or portionsot' the car superstructure may be yremoved without. disturbing said flooring. The seat structure, thus shown, is simple and forms a `rood truss and has a finished appearance.
Having thus described my invention, the Vfollowing' is what ,t claiin as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a seat structure for passenger cars, upwardly extending posts riveted to the undert'ranio, cross-bearers riveted to the upperends oi said posts and asill riveted to said posts and cross-bearers.
2. In a seat structure tor a passenger cai-,
the combination with the car side andundertraine.' of' cross-bearers secured to the side and posts secured to the underfraxne and secured to said cross-bearers at points intermediate the ends of said cross-bearer?.
.23. ln a seat structure for passenger cars. a seat cross-bearer supported at one end by the car side structure in combination with a seat post supporting said cross-bearer at a point. distant troni the outer and inner ends ot `said cross-bearer.
l. In a seat structure tor passenger cars. a seat panel` an edging or border for said panel having a` tubular section embracing* said panel',l and fastening means passed through said section and panel. I
ln a seat structure for passenger cars, a panel and an ledging; or border for said panel consisting of a\ tube splitL to receive said panel and fastening` means passed through said tube and panel.
(S. In a seat structure for passenger cars, a panel having an irregular Shaped edge and a border or edging t'or said panel consist-ing of a commercial tube split to receive said panel and bent io form to' the shape of said The foregoing specificatin signed at Mcedge.
