Description

S. W. SLOCUMB. Wagon Axl e.
Patented July 20, 1869.

W/ rue-$85.9:
flaunt dtiijiirr.
SAMUEL -W. sLo'cUMB, OF ALBA NY ILLlNOIS.
Letters Patent No. 92,891, dated July 20, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To an whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. swarms, of A1- bany, in the county of Whitesides, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Axle-Trees; 'and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a plan or side view of a thinlble-skein of my improved construction, orit may represent one end of an iron axle;
Figure 2 is an end View of the smaller end of the same;
Figure 3 is an end view of the larger end; and Figure 4 is a transverse section in line at x, fig. 1. Corresponding lettersrefer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the skeins of axles, or the journals of iron'axles, in
such a manner that the centre of weight is eccentric to and forward of the centre'of the wheels, as hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, in the drawings, represents a. thimble-skein, made of cast-iron, or other suitable metal.
On each cut], extending some distance along its outer surface, it has the projections a a a and b 1: b the outer surface of which forms the half of a perfect circle of the diameter of the box of a wheel which is to revolve over them.
These projections are'eccentric to the main body of the skein, as clearly shown in figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
The skein is firmly secured on the end of an axle in such a manner that the outer edges of projections a and b are perpendicularly under the centre of the periphery of. such projections, and in rear of the centre of its main body and axle.
It is apparent that by this arrangement, the centre of the skein and axle, which is also the centre of weight, will be forward of the centre of the wheel, which is the centre of motion, and the pressure of the load will be communicated'through the projections a A and b to the front lower portion of the box in the hub of the wheel.
B represents a packing of cloth, or other suitable material, which is fastened upon the outer surface of the main body of the skein, and extends along its whole length, and is of suitable width. It serves as a constant lubricator as well as a preventive of friction from grit.
It is obvious that where iron axles are used, the.
skein may be dispensed with, and the projections above described be formed upon the journals of such axles.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The projections 11 a a? and b b b, formed upon the outer surfaces of axle-skeins or axles themselves, eccentrically thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described. g
2. The packing B, in combination with the skein A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Intestimony whereofi'Ihave signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
