UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX HANSEN, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
FLEXIBLE PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATE OR FILM.
Specificaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1909.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX HANsEN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Flexible Photographic Plates or Films, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of my invention is an improved fleXible plate or film for photographio purposes, which in addition to being eXceedingly durable and cheap to manufacture, is of such nature that the Shadows cast in printing by the grain or structure of the material employed as support for the sensitive medium are caused to van'sh, owing to dispersion of the light.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows an enlarged sectional view of a fragment of a negative film.
The transparent basis a may be of paper, To this support I apply an optically glassy layer b consisting of a mass of deXtrin, or some kind of glue, resin, varnish, or other similarly diaphanous substance. This hyalin layer serves to disperse the light in printing out, and in order that Shadows due to the teXture or grain of the support a may be eectually dii'used, I findthat the layer l should be of at least the same thickness as the base a which supports it. The sensitive material c is distributed over the intermediate layer b.
By means of my invention the disadvantages attending the use of prior paper or like films, owing to the Shadows arising in printing, are thus entirely obviated. At the same time the negatives given are free from halation.
The improved film is very essentially ohea er to manufacture than celluloid films, whic moreover are objectionable on account of their inflammability and their great liability to destruction by Chemical influences. My new film is also much superior to gelatin films, which owing to their fragility are altogether unsuitable for kinematographic purposes, and which are also apt to curl by reason of their hygroscopic character.
As compared with glass plates the improved film possesses the additional advantages of lightness and portability, without danger of fracture.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new is A pliable photographc plate or film, consisting of a basis of transparent fiexible material, a sensitive medium supported thereby, and a hyalin layer interposed between said basis and sensitive medium, of such thckness as to cause Shadows arising in printing out, owing to the structure of thebasis,to be efiectually diffused by dispersion of light, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
i MAX HANSEN.
