To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O'r'ro S. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to a toy cannon adapted for use in shooting peas or similar round objects, and has for an object to provide a device of this character whereby a quantity of peas may be fed to a barrel from which they may be discharged in a novel manner.

A further object of this invention is to provide an interesting toy for the amusement of children which will be simple in construction, manufactured at a relatively low figure and which will include a novel form of piston for ejecting peas or the like from the toy.

With these and other ends in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing have been illustrated a simple and preferred form of invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desirable.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the present invention, parts being in an inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, the piston partly withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing there is shown a toy cannon 5 having an enlargement 6 in which is formed a vertically disposed funnel shaped receptacle 7, the lower end of which opens into a longitudinal extending passage 8 which opens at both ends outwardly of the device as shown, and in which is slidably mounted a piston 9. The piston 9 carries at its outer end a head 10 which is preferably formed of cork or similar elastic material. An elastic band 11 is provided for holding the piston normally within the passage 8, and the free ends of this band are secured to the sides of the toy as indicated at 12, and the curved outer portion 13 of said band is passed around the head 10. While an elastic band is preferably employed it is obvious that any spring or elastic means may be substituted in lieu thereof.

The funnel shaped receptacle is closed by a lid 14; in which is formed a passage 15 whereby the peas or other objects may be inserted within the receptacle. The passage 15 may be normally closed by means of a sliding element 16 mounted upon the lid 14: as shown.

In use, it will be seen that peas or the like from the receptacle may be automatically fed to the passage 8 upon withdrawing the piston 9 to uncover the lower open end of said receptacle. As soon as the head 10 is released from the fingers of the operator, it is obvious that the same will be moved inwardly to discharge the peas from the passage 8. A toy as set forth and described presents a vast amount of amusement for children, and may be manufactured and put upon the market at a slight cost.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

A toy cannon having a longitudinally disposed passage opening at its ends at the front and rear ends of the said cannon, a piston slidably mounted in the said passage and provided at one end with an elastic cushion head, a strip of rubber secured to the cannon and engaged with the said elastic head for holding the piston normally at the inward extent of its movement in the said passage, a funnel shaped receptacle carried by said cannon having a contracted discharge end communicating with the passage and adapted to be closed normally by the piston, a lid for said receptacle having a' passage formed therein adapted for use in filling the receptacle with projectiles, and an element upon said lid adapted to close the passage therein.
