Description

WALTER F. HUNTER, OF BROOKFIELD, MISSOURI.
EXTENSIBLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1909.
Application filed September 21, 1908. Serial No. 453,942.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WALTER F. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to house fittings, and more particularly to hinges, and has for its object to provide a hinge adapted to allow adjustment of a door or other closure vertically and horizontally within its frame without disengagement of the hinge.
Another object is to provide such a hinge which is adapted to be stamped from sheet material.
Another object is to provide such a hinge having a supplementary leaf section slidably engaged with one of the leaves, and to provide a simple means for adjusting the body of the hinge horizontally with respect to the extension.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will 4be understood that changes in the specifi'c structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, and that any suitablematerials may be used without de arting from the spirit of the invention.
n the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the hinge opened, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through Athe hinge at one of the grooves, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the extensible leaf, Fig. 5 is a detail of the supporting nut.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a hinge having leaves 10 and 11 provided with suitable intermeshing knuckles 12 having i perforations therethrough registering when the knuckles are intermeshed, the knuckles and the spaces therebetween being of such dimensions as to allow sliding movement of the opposite leaves relatively and longitudinally on their pivot. The leaf 10 is provided with a suitable number of perforations 13 to receive screws therethrough or other suitable fastenings for attaching it to a door or frame. The leaf 11 is provided with a plurality of spaced laterally extending grooves 14 pressed in its outer face and having an opening A centrally through each of the grooves the opening being of a diameter less than the width of the grooves. Carried by the leaf 11 there is a leaf extension 15 having a plurality of openings 13 therethrough, 'and provided with guide portions 16 stamped upwardly from the plate and engaged slidably in the grooves 14 of the leaf 11. Central slots 1'7 are formed longitudinally of the guides 16, being of a width to leave a retaining flange 18 on opposite sides thereof for a purpose to be subse uently indicated. Threaded bolts19 with s otted heads are engaged through the openings Ain the leaf 1 1 and disposed slidably in the slots 17, having a nut 2O engaged therewith below the guide 16 and disposed slidably in the space 2 1 beneath the guides 16 for engagement with the flanges" 18 upon operation of the bolts 19. by engagement of a screw driver with the slotted head 17, of the bolt 19 the extension 15 and leaf 11 may be adjustably clamped to each other. Slidably coengaged through the knuckles 12 of the leaves 10 and 11 there is a suitable pintle 22.
It will be understood that if desired, the flange 10 of the hinge may be formed similarly to the flange 11 and engaged with a similar plate 14, if found desirable. This would admit of the adjustment of the hinge to allow an attached door to swing out beyond adjacent architraves.
What is claimed is 1. A hinge comprising pivoted leaf members and a detachable extension member slidably coengaged therewith, certain of said members having longitudinally slotted laterally extending guide portions stamped therefrom, the coengaged members having grooves impressed therein provided with central perforations, said grooves being slidably engaged over said guide portions, and a fastening member engaged through said vopenings and disposed slidably in said guide members for adj ustably clamping the coengaged members against relative movement.
2. As an article of manufacture, a hinge including a pivoted leaf having spaced grooves pressed therein, and an extension leaf having spaced oblong projections formed thereon, said projections forming concavities on the opposite sides of the member, and adapted for slidable engagement within said grooves, said extension member having slots formed through said projections and extend- It will be seen that ing longitudinally thereof, said first named In testimony whereof I aEX my signature, leali1 haping perforation? therethrough oenin presence oftwo Witnesses. traJ y o the grooves, a, olt engaged through r said perforations and disposed slidahly WAL FER F' HUNTER' 5 through said slots, and a nut engaged upon l/Vitnesses:
