Description

amt satafitment Elfin.
SELF AND L. C. SHEPARD.-
Lmm Patent No. 92,847, dated July 20, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To allquhom it may concern Be it'kn'own that I, JAMES S. LESTER, of Knoxville,
in the county of Knox, and in the Stateof Tennessee,-
have invented certain new and useful Improvements inElevating-Apparatus; and do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact -description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an elevating-apparatus, for elevating brick, mortar, or other building-material, to the point where Wanted in the erection of houses, 850. I I11 order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which re'present a perspective of my apparatus.
A represents a: horizontal beam, laid across the wall of ahouse, and provided, on its under side, with two bars, B B, which extend downward, one on each side of the wall, thus bracing the beam A and holding .it in position.
. One of ,the bars 13 is provided with one or more temper ,orset-screws, C, so as t6 conform to walls of different thickness.
Onthe outer end of the beam A is a frame, D, pivoted in its centre, so as to turn in any direction desired.
The frame Dis at each end provided with two pulleys, a a, and at.the foot of the wall is placed a pulleyblook, l), with two pulleys.
At any convenient distance from the wall is placed another block, 0, with one pulley.
Through the. pulley-blocks b and c, and over the pulleys a a, runs'a rope, (1, arranged in such a manner that as one end is running up the otheris running down.
To the ends of the rope (I are attached receptacles E E, suitable for elevating whatever building-material is required.
The elevator may be operated either by a crank or by a horse attached in some suitable manner to the rope (I, so that the horse will raise one side going one way and the other side returning, lowering the opposite side each time.
The weight of the frame D and the hoisting-apparatus on the outer end of the beam A is counterbalanced by a lever, F, slippen on the inner end of the bean A, and attached to a joist in the building.
The elevator, thus constructed, can readily be raised as the building progresses.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable elevating-apparatus, so constructed that when one receptacle moves up another moves down, substantially as herein set forth.
2 The adjustable elevating-apparatus, so constructed that when the hoisting-rope is moved in one direction one end is raised, and when moved in the opposite di- 1 ,rection the other end is raised, lowering the opposite side each'time, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the horizontal beam A, bracebars B B, pivoted frame D, and counterbalancing-lever F, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. In combination with the pivoted frame D, on the
