Description

G. aA. HUNTLEY.
' Heating Stove.
4mmm July 2011869v PETERS. WMI-HMBC.
naar ,ema
@wwf -Gliiiira Letters Patent No. 92,829,'dated July 20, 1869.
coAns'rQvn.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters P atent and making part of the same'.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE.I A. HUNTLEY, of
l Quincy, in the county of Adams, and State of Illinois,
have invented a new'and improved Heating-Stove;
and I. do 'hereby declare that the following is a full, f
clear, and exact descriptionof the vconstruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the acvsaid air-passage, whereby the current of airis made to pass either back and forth in a zigzag course, as it rises, or else to pass around the tire-pot in an ascending spiral line, so as to become thoroughly heated' before it is discharged from the stove, the outer wall of the stove remaining comparatively cool all the while.
In the drawings- 'f A is that part of the drum or outer wall of the 'stove which encloses the nre-chamber;
B is an annular plate, attached to the top of the drum A;
C is a drumresting upon the plate B, and fastened in place by rods and nuts, or screw-bolts;
D is the topiofy the stove E is the grate;
F is the ash-pit; and
G is the vtire-pot, a space' being left between the walls of the tire-chamber G and drum A, as shown in fi 1.
gThis space isdivided, by annular horizontal partitions h h, into several compartments, H H H, one over another. l
Each compartment is also provided with -a vertical partition, I, which prevents a current of air 'om passing continuously around the ire-pot.
The lower compartment, H, communicates with the next, H', above it, through a small opening, a, in thc partition 7i., alongside of the vertical wall I, so that` the air, entering the compartment H, is obliged to pass around and escape through the opening a, into chamber H'. There it is obliged to turn to the light and pass entirely around the lire-pot, till it arrives at the opposite side'of the wall I, when it nds another opening, a', through which it can escape into the next compartment," H, above, and so on, as many compartments being employed as may be thought best.
From the upper compartment H", it escapes through the hole J, or through a pipe inserted into the hole, and passes to the apartment that is to be warmed'.
It will begobserved that`the air is thus forced 'to travel slowly around the lire-pot, s o as to become thoroughly heated. This is effected much better by the arrangement described, than by means of a spiral pipe, since, in the latter, the current passes continuously and rapidly around the stove, and escapes but partially heated, while, by my apparatus, the air travels slowly around the fire-chamber, escaping ina rapid jet through the holes a a', from one apartment to the other.
When moving slowly in the several apartments, it has an opportunity to circulate up and down and laterally duringits passage, so as to become thoroughly intermingled. anduniformly heated; whereas, if im` pelled almost directly forward at a considerable `vef locity, it would not become thus thoroughly intermingled before it escapes through the hole J or through a pipe inserted into the hole, and passes to the apartment that'is to he warmed.
It is evident that if the walls I I were in the same vertical line, the cuxrentcould be made to pass in a zigzag course around thestove, theetect of which would be the same as the arrangement above described. y
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim the application of aspiral tube between the wallsG and A, to convey a current of air; but
What I do claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement, in a stove, of the horizontal partitions It h and vertical partitionsI I, in connection with the'walls A G and small passages a a', as described, whereby the air is made to circulate slowly around the fire-pot iu the large horizontal passages H H H", escaping rapidly fror'nonc passage to another through the small holes a a', substantially as ,and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the, above, I have hereunto subscribed my naine, in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. HUNTLEY.
