No. siem;
Be 'it known'that ll, 'Anon J.l HOFFMAN," a citizen of the Unitedv States-of America,
,. and al residentvof the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Im# provements inv Clothes-Pressing l Apparatus,
' of which the -following is a specication.
My invention pertains tov certainnew and useful improvements in clothesrpressingv ap paratus, and has for its object a device .of
. l this type which in its operationwill simultaneously dampen or moisten and press the clothes. g
The invention consistsv in'the novel con-.v
structionf-arrangement and combination of parts to be fully hereinafter referred toand pointed out in the appendedclairns. I.nthe accompanying drawings Figure 1, 1s an end elevation of my improved device, the press head being in partial` section ,taken on line l, of Fig. 4, Fig. v2, is'a fraglnentary Vlongitudinal section on fline- 2,; of Fig. 4, Fig.` 3,1lis a top plan view .of-the pressblock, showing its supports in ,dotte'd lines, and Fig. 4, is a top planvlew of my improved device, 'portions being broken away and parts-removed.: Fig. 5y 1s a4 sec-- tion@ through a pressing block used in connection with'the present invention. Fig. '6 is a sectiongthrough an 'air intake valve `forming part ofthepresent invention.
In the'embodimentof my inventiona base `designated at 1, is yemployed whichsupports 'supported vand the 4press head a press blocl'2, anda presshead 3, movable i oneln relation to the other, as shown in the f present case the pressfblock being rigidly movably' mountedwith respect' thereto. f L
For the purpose ofv the present-invention'l 'the press block may be of the usual and well known-form,shown in` F ig'. 3, aj facing of @10th 4,-being employed which verlies paddinfr4 shaped-to impart a convex contour to t'liepress-block. face. Y
' w 'f Q The press head is hollow and preferably of the fornoA shown,vv co forming 1n outlinel i to the press block, and comprises a base V5,
`formed 4with 'a 'dependingmarginal :flange .6, and v elon ated dome 7, whichi's disposed [centrally o the base and'spacedfromthe i periphery' of 'the -san1e.".. The base 5,4 forms-v rv1n conjunction with the. sides'of fthe` dome and a covering8,va heatingfchamber, en.' 5.5-

and a like flange-11, of greater .width than Han'ge -10, for the purpose of,` engagement with and securement to ange 6, the securement being preferably eii'ected by means of screws 12.
In the present disclosure I haveshowna pair of burners, 13, 14, vof U-form disposed' vso as lto conjointly embrace the dome, The
burners lare identical duplicates of each other', Va detail description ofo'ne: therefore Asufficing' for the other. Burner 13, coInprises atubular member 15, whose endsI are curved inwardly as at-`16,forming elbowconnections withr pieces of pipe 17, whose inner ends are suitably closed. with stops 18.-
Member v15, is formed with a central tubular.l part 18, to which is threaded an air and gas mixery '19, provided with valve 20, to govern I `the intake of'air, and tube 21, for the admission of'gas, said tube leadingto the sc )urcev of supply. :The burners 'are spaced froln base 5, which lis accomplished by seating the' burners on 'ribs 22, formed on base 5, clips 23, being employed whichvare secured t'o the base at their lower ends and curved at their opposite endsto embrace the tubular member 15, for the purpose of rigidly retaining the burners in position. J v yThe burners are formed with -a series of gas outlets 24, disposed radially and arrangedso as to direct.l the flame at points coincident with the junctionof base' 5, and
herein after' set forth.
the sides of the dome, fora purpose to be The vpress headfurth'er embodies dee.
Hector-'25, here shown the form of a ,plate disposed at a distance below the top of dome A, 7 .Y The mode of supporting deflectorff25, may
be, as shown, bymeans fof spacingfl sleeves 26, through which pass bolts`27, the heads of `which engage the undersides of dector 25, and the opposite ends of which are 4threaded ico into engagement with bosses providedl on the -un'der side of'do'me 7.; Byrefe'r'ence, to Fig.' 2, ofthe drawings it- Willbe observed that '.deector 25, extendsin proxnnlty ,to the pointof juncture ofthe sides of dome/ and said point of juncture f :To .the marginal Hang@ eccevepn 1 28', is secured. preferablyY by 'meansff screws area with perforations 29 and1being'spaced the base 5,l being y,but slightly [spaced from' from :deiecto'r'25.. Itvwill beobserved that concave plate28, has its degree of curvature corresponding to the degree 'of curvature of the convex face of press block 2, enabling the press head yand press block to act in con- `junction when operating on clothes. Plate 28, is faced with a section of. cloth- 30, which isturned upwardly. to engage the outer lsides of the flange 11, of covering 8, preferably being retained in engagement by means of a 101 securing\wire 31,n which is drawn tau to frmly' segr'e the cloth. f IQome 7 is formed with a steam inlet 31, disposed centrally thereof, and to .which a pipe 32, is connected, a controlling valve 33., eingfintrposed in said pi e to govern the ingressjof steam. Pipe '32, Is connected toa ipe'34, the latter being connected to a pipe i? ween'pipe 34', and 'a pipe 36, which leads 'o the steam source of supply, this swivel /ma'nifestly being for ythe purpose of accommodatingA movement of the press head;
, It will be observed that detlector 25, serves to divide the ,hollow press head into an 'up- 2 5 per and a lower chamber, in communication with each other b virtue-of a passage formed by the de ector terminating at -a point adjacent to the dme sides, this pas-v .sa e as previously stated being at a point co1ncident with the pointV at which the burner flames are directed. Steam upon en- I tering the upper chamber throughV inlet 31, `is encountered by deflector.V 25; the steam upon expanding seeking the said, passage 5 vand passing downwardly into the lower chamber Awhere it again expands and completely lls the lowerI chamber. vThe steam 1n egressing through the apertures of plateA 28, has itsv moisture absorbed by the cloth facing of said plate, and by reason of said cloth facing being in contact with the clothes being pressed imparts thel necessary'inoisture to the latter, as well as heating plate 28, toa degree of temperature sufficient for 45 the purpose of pressing. It will therefore be 'obvlous that during the entire oper-ation a certain proportion of moisturefwill beimparted to the clothes, itbeingossible, however, to cut off the ingress o steam, after the press head has become heated toa degree sufficient forthe purpose, by operation of controlling valve 33.-
A valuable v adjunct to my invention is iny the nature of the burners, whose function it isfto superheat the steam during the` time ofv its passage vfrom the upper into the lower chamber, at which perlod the steamg is egressing into'the lower chamberv through'a assageV of comparatively small area,"there 0 y'completely subjecting the steam toheat from a Vlameof great intensity.
The press head is swingingl mounted for movement 'to and from blocli 2, the head being supported A'b y arms 37, 37,'A Secured vto a shaft 38, the latter havingfulcrumed -to hanger 43, 'which depends frombase'l; la retractile spring 44, being connected to the base andthe foot lever for returning the press head to normalposition.y
The present invention is designed for use in tailorin establishments as distinguished skirts, and the like, be moistenedprevious to application of the' heated pressing medium applied under` considerable pressure. By the use offmy invention separate operations for obtaining a dampening or mo'istening of the cloth and the pressing thereof are obviated, both being performed in one and the same operation.
