' Application filed June 18,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Cnannns E. WAREAM and Gnonen N. LINK, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pressing ma chines, and more particularly to small presses for pressing collars, cuffs, shirt neckbands, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved frame construction which simplifies the circulation of steam or heating fluid to the pressing or other members to be heated.
More particularly the invention has for its object to provide a pressing machine frame made in several parts provided with channels or passages so disposed as to register with each other when the parts of the frame z t-reassembled, whereby the frame is simple to construct and provides proper steam circulation at minimum cost.
Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
The invention comprises the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, which represent one suitable embodiment of the invention, Figure l is a front view of the upper portion of the machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the machine; Fig. 4: is a sectional elevation, on a larger scale, on the line 1-4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a front view of the lower pressing member or bed Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. i is a side elevation from the right in Fig. 5; Fig. 8 is a front view of the upper frame member; Fig. 9 is a side elevation from the right in Fig. 8; Fig. 10 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 11 is a detail cross sectional view on the line 1111, Fig. 10; Fig. 12 is a front view of the intermediate frame member; Fig; 13 is a plan view thereof; and Fig. 14 is a side elevation from the right in Fig. 12.
The pressing machine shown in the drawings comprises a suitable frame includlng a stationary base-or lower member 1 adapted to rest upon the floor or other suitable support, an intermediate member 2 supported Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d J l 19 31921.
1919. Serial No. 305,048.
thereby, and an upper member or head 3 which forms the upper or stationary pressng member. In said frame is mounted a vertically movable lower pressing member or bed 4% which cooperates with the head and is mounted on the upper end of a post 5 to which is connected the operating means for producing vertical movement. Briefly described, the operating mechanism includes a foot treadle 6 pivoted in the machine base and one arm of which, marked 7, cooperates as a toggle with a link 8 connected to the lower end of the post 5. 9 represents the usual release treadle and 10 a compression spring serving as a shock absorber for the descending bed. The bed is provided with a horizontally movable work holding frame 11 provided and also with a rearwardly extending rod 13 connected at its outer end to a long link 14: which at its lower end is connected by a short link 15 to the stationary frame. 16 indicates a tension spring normally tending to advance the work holding frame into its outer or exposed position. 16 is a post on the vertically movable bed, which post is guided in an opening in the stationary frame, as will appear.
The lower frame member or base 1 is provided at its upper end with separated arms or posts 17 whose upper end portions are provided with finished surfaces in a horizontal plane. On these surfacesare supported the intermediate frame member 2 before referred to. This member is illustrated in detail in Figs. 12 to 14: inclusive. It comprises a horizontally extending hollow body 18 provided at its center with an upwardly extending cylindrical portion 19 and at one side thereof with a perforated ear 20 to receive post 16 At each end the body is provided with a vertically extending post portion 21 having horizontally finished upper and lower surfaces as shown in Fig. 12. tach of these post portions is provided with a vertically extending through aperture 22 and with a hollow chamber 23 provided with a threaded inlet 2a to receive a pipe or fit ting and with an upwardly extending threaded opening 25 communicating with said chamber. The chambers 23 in the two posts 21 communicate with a longitudinally extending hollow passage 26 in the body, said passage in turn communicating with the hollow chamber 27 in the cylinder 19.
The head 3 is of arched form, as shown with the operating handle 12 in Fig. 8, so that its under surface, which is shaped complementary to the shape of the work holder and bed 4:, gives the proper shape to the articles being pressed; Said head has an intermediate hollow body 28 whose innerchannel or passage 29 communicates at each end with a chamber 30 in the hollow post portion 31 at the end of said body. This post portion is provided with a vertically'extending through opening 32 and at one side thereof with a similar opening33-passing through the chamber 30, as shown in Fig. 4:. Near its center the body 28 is also provided with a threaded passage 34 into which may be threaded a pipe or fitting 35.
The frame parts are shown assembled in Figs. 1 and 4. Between the pest portions of the frame members 2 and 3"are located suitable gaskets 36, and said frame parts are solidly secured together and to the frame base 1 by the through bolt 37 fastened to the basel and provided on its upper end with the clamping nut 38. This bolt passes through the registering openings 22, 32. In the assembled position of the parts the channels 25, 33 register, and communication between chambers 23 and 30 is established through a longitudinal passage 39 and radial ports e0 in a hollow stud 11 threaded into the passage 25. This stud is threaded atits upper end to receive the clamping nut 42, the joint being sealed by a packing l2 surrounding said stud and lying above a packing nut 42.
Steam circulation through the frame may be established in either of two ways. I First, the opening 34 in the head may be closed by a plug. In this case steam is supplied through a pipe 13 threadedinto one of the passages 24 and flows to the chamber 23. From this chamber the steam flows along two paths, one through the passage 26 and chamber 27 to the chamber 23 in the opposite post member 21, and the other through the hollow stud 41 to chamber 30, thence through the passage 29 of the head to the other chamber 30 and down through the second hollow stud to the chamber '23 on the other side of the machine, from which it is discharged through a pipe 44. If desired, however, steam circulation may be established fromthe head downwardly. In other words, steam is supplied through the pipe 35 to the center of the head where the current divides and flows toward both sides of the machine thence downwardly through the hollow posts and out through both of the pipes 43, 44:. No steam flows through the passage 26 or chamber 27 but they are filled with live steam and maintain the parts hot.
. The head of the machine is heated by direct flow 'of steam therethrough. The bed 1 is a vertically movable member and no steam is directly supplied thereto. However, said bed has a cylindrical portion 45 which surrounds the cylinder 19, the lower portion of said member 15 being bifurcated, as shown in Fig. 7, to form two arms 46 which straddle the body 18. The bed is therefore heated by contact with the heated cylinder 19, from which the heat is radiated to the cylinder 45.
The machine described is ofsimple construction since the passages and chambers can be cored out in the castings. Bysubsequently finishing off the meeting surfaces the course of circulation of the steam is es tablished when the frame parts are secured together.
