To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PERGY 'lwmu, a oltlzen of the United. States re :dihg: s t
Newark, in the county oil Essex. and Eritate of New Jersey, have invented a new and iul BuHing-Iduckxine, of which the following lsaspccificatiou.
The objects of this invention are to facilitate the butting of bells for amplifying horns, and particularly to enable both the outer and inner surfaces to be readily reached; to )rovide for this purpose it device which can c either used independently or applied to any regular type of boiling stand to secure freedom. of cdgustment, and to ob tain other advantages and results which may be brought out in the following descrit Lion.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals oi" relerence indicate corresponding parts in each of the. several figures, Figure l is an end elevstiou of my improved. machine; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same partly in section. 3 is a sectional View of a hell to he culled Fig at is detail sectional View. of the chuck for boiling the interiorof the hell, and, showing" also the said bell and bufling wheel; Fig. 5 is detail of the chuck for boiling the exterior of c hell, artly in section to show the clamp for holdlilg a hell to the chuck, end Fig. 6 is a section upon line :0, Fig. l.
In said drawimgs, .l indicates a suitable frume which may he of any coustructioi commonly used in butting; machines end providing at its top raised. hearings 2, 2,i11 which is mounted or journaled a liorisoutally disposed shaft 3, which is shown in the draw ings as having at its middle portion a belt pulle 4 and. at its up osite ends hulliug whee s 5, 5, and. which mulling wheels thus have fixed locations at the ends of tie frame 1. T l j Upon one end of the frame 1 is mounted a. transverse bracket or auxiliary frame 6 l which is preferably adjustable in height by means of -martical slots '7 thrci h which its holding hoits 8 pass. lnthe top oi the said auxiliary frame 6 is a slideway 9 adapted to receive a imitahle foot or base 10 upon the carriage ll, which is thus adapted to he ad justed transversely of the main l as by means of a screw Upon a r post 13 upon the said. carriage is c rot hmcket i l, and lIGZlCiL'lll the in beackct is a Worm wheel 15 lust thereto and adopted to turn the same, prefcrohly Toy metms ol a worm 16 arranged upon a some which has hearings 18, 19 upon the said carriage sud auxiliary ire-me respectivcly, end is provided at its outer end with a laud-wheel 2G. The said bracket L4 has acted. to itself an exteiision or arm 21 which hoods upward and provides substanin the plane of the hu'lling wheel shaft a for a spindle The s )indle carries at outer end the driving pulley 2i and. at its inner end a chuck 25 suitably shaped to receive the hell or similar article to he boiled. This chuck I have shown in the drawings as formed to receive upon itself the bell 2e ol' a horn which is to be polished. or buffed upon its cute: surface, end to this end the hell 26 incloses the said chuck and is held. thereon by cclsm'p 27 and be varied, and fiirthermorc, the connection of the hraclzet and arm 21 is by means of slotting the two seid numhersand passing a cl raping screw thercthrou h, so that still tumbler adjustment is pcssi ole. This last adjustment is for the pur ose of accommodating difierci'zt sizes bells and is changed only when the size of the bells umge The udjustn'ieut of the carriagell regulates the pressure of the hell agsinst the boiling wheel end would probably be set each times hell is out on; it would also he used in case of mm even spots on a hell and to accommodatechanges in size oi the hutiin Wheel or of various curvatures of bells. fihviously, the movement of the chuck by means of hand Wheel 26 acting through shaft 17, Worm 16, and Worm Wheel 15, might also he effected eutrmiiatitelly by oceans oi gee-ring and proloi 'v would be so dose in actual practice.
.Will he understood thattllc apparatus lied. tiling the outer surface of e iglit prm ulc for use noon. another chuck; for huhiug "is-wide oi" s, 'ccih l prelcr for convenience es'mtllcr clm lz; upon. the opposite end of the hull g; uutchiuc and which driven and adjusted precisely as has already been. de- SOlil'JtXl in connection with the chuck- 25. This second driving and :uljusting means will therefore not he descibed. in detail, but the chuck its-elf "2), li- .S outwardly away from the end of the spindle. 3i) and is thus cupshaped. to receive Within. itself a bell 31. A clamp 32 lies u )on the bottom of said hell in the bottom ot said chuck, and the stem 33 of said clamp extends through the spindle to receive a Wing-nut 34 at the outer end thereof. 7
While I have designed this machine )articularly for Work upon the bells of ampiifying horns, it is obvious that the same might be employed upon other articles.
Having thus descrihcd the invention, What l claim as new is;
'l. in a boiling machine, the combination oi a frame, a horimnitally disposed shaft jourualed in said harm, a hui'ling wheel on said shaft, a v1 tical nos; on said frame, a
bracket'proiectiug piviitally from said post, an arm on said bracket iongitiulinally adjustalile with respect thereto, a chuck rotatahly mounted on said arm with its axis in substantially horizontal lilane, means for means or ro tat indesaid hracket. am 0 hulling wheel. shaft and chuck 'peru lcn tly.
2. In a huiiing machine, a bufling Wheel having a fixed locat n, a chuck having a curved. surl'uci', an ad talile bracket adapt ed to rotiualily support said. chuck and being pivoted at the center of curvature of said curved surface of the chuck, means for swingine brack t, and means lor rotating said huliiug Wheel and said. chuck.
3. in a boiling; machine, the con'ibinatiim oi a cl ruck lowing surl'ace flaring on curved. lines, a spindle harii'ig said chuck rcmovahly last thereon, an. arm in which said spindle is journalcd, a bracket pivoted at substantially the cmiter of curvature of the said lines of flaring of the chuck surface, means connectin said arn and. bracket and enabling the .c to he. adjusted with respect to each other to the radii of curvature of dilfcrent chucks, a bufiing Whcil, and. a supgm'ting frame.
4-. in a huiling' machine, conihiuation with a frame and a bracket pivoted tlu-reiln. of a spindlc jourualed in said hracl-is-t, a cupllliG chuck fast on said spindl hai 'iug its side surfaces flaring on curved lines and a transverse end, a clamping plat. 1 adapted to lie against said. end, and means extendingcell-- trally through said clamping plate into the spindle of the chuck for tightening the clamping plate against said chuck.
5. The combination with a frame, a horizontally disposed. shaft iourualml in said frame and a bufling wheel on said shaft, of a carriage horizontally slidahle on saidv frame in a direction transverse to the. Imlling; Wheel shaft, a screw shalt for sliding said (:ai'i'uigc and holding the same at any desired point, 2. vertical post on said carriage, a bracket pix oted on said post, an arm extensild connected with said hrachet, a cluick :roL-tahly mounted on said arm ilh its axis in suh stantially horizontal plane, lll-lzLHH lor suinging said hraclcct, and means for rotating said hull'ing Wheel sin-tit and chucl: inde jieud entl 6. The cmnhinatiou with a i'ixuiu, a hori- Zontally disposed shalt journa in said ;(.(.l frame and a huiling Wheel on said shaft, of an auxiliary frame vertically a hustahle u non said main. l'ramc and providing at its upper "part a horizontal slideway extending transverscly of the said hulling wheel shaft, a car riage in said slideway, means for sliding; said carriage and holding the same at any desired 'oint, a vertical post on said carriage, a liraclret pivoted on said post, an. arm extensihly conuectci'l to said bracket, a chuck rotatahly mounted in said arm with its axis in substantially horizontal plane, means for swinging said bracket, and means .l'or rotating said huiling wheel shaft and chuck. indepcni'ientiy.
