W. LEWIS.
TUNNEL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 31, 1907.

i A fiumnroz Hfst UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LEWIS, OF ALLEGHEN Y, PENNSYLVANIA.
' FUNNEL.
To all whom fit may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEWIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to funnels designed more particularly for use in filling the fuel tanks 1n automobiles, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a funnel with a detachable gasolene strainer, by means of which the gasolene is strained as it is poured .into the fuel tanks of automobiles, and to arrange means whereby the means employed for retaining the strainer to the funnel will also serve as means for support- .ing the entire device upon a can during the filling process.
This and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a funnel made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the gasolene strainer detached from the funnel proper. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the funnel from which the strainer is detached. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the funnel, and strainer.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the funnel of tapering form as shown in the drawing and provided at opposite points near its upper edge with keepers 2, said keepers 'having a horizontal arm 3, and an inwardly extending lip 4. The gasolene strainer 5 comprises a hollow tapering body portion, the smaller end 6 of which is adapted to fit within the up er end of the funnel l. An annular ange extends around the periphery of the strainer 5, and is provided with oppositely disposed notches or recesses 8 designed to be brought into coincidence with the keepers 4, and when the strainer is turned the flange 7 is engaged with the inwardly extending lips 4 of said keeper, thus permitting the strainer to be readily attached Specification of Letters Patent.

and detached from the funnel. At the lower end of the strainer a reduced tubular extens101119 is provided and above the reduced portion an annular flange 10 connects the lower edge of the strainer with said reduced portion 9. Beneath the flange l0, the extension 9 has formed therein an annular concavity 10a. A ieee of chamois skin is secured by means of a cord or wire 11 which is confined within the eoncavity l()a to the reduced portion 9 near the flange 10, said chamois skin l2 extending below the lower edge of the tubular portion 9 to form a strainer for gasolene.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a combined strainer and funnel made in accordance with my invention may be carried within an automobile and will occupy but little space, will efficiently strain the gasolene as it is poured into the fuel tank; that the strainer may be readily detached from the funnel and the funnel used for other purposes, that the device is of simple construction and can be manufactured at slight cost.
The fiange 7 carried by the strainer 5 while serving the purpose hereinbefore described serves as a stop to limit the upward Amovement of the funnel and also as a stop or support for the funnel and strainer when engaged with a vessel during the filling of the same, it being obvious that the said flange 7 will rest upon the top of the vessel around the filling opening.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
The herein described funnel and strainer comprising a tapering tube forming the funnel, keepers secured at opposite points upon the said tube, each keeper having a horizontally disposed arm, and an upwardly and inwardly extending lip carried by the arm and disposed above the upper edge of said tube, a strainer comprising a hollow tapering body portion having its smaller end fitted in the larger end of the funnel, and an annular flange extending around the periphery of the strainer and adapted to serve as a stop to limit the upward movement of the funnel and also serving as a nstmony whereof, I affix my signustop o1' support for the funnel and strainer ture 111 PleSenCe O WO WllneSSeS- when the s'nme is in .use with a vessel, said WILLIAM LEWIS flange having oppositely disposed notches Y; y formed therein to receive the horizontally W itl-1955651 disposed arms of the keepers so that the JOSHULISVALENTINE, inwardly extendinolips can be locked with said flange at the slides of the slots.
