3e it known that I, HENRY L. DARWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Pum for Drawing and Measuring Liquids, of whlch the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps for elevating 01' drawing and measuring all kinds of liquids, and es ecially alcoholic liquors to be sold overa er; and the objects of my improvements are to rovide a pump for drawing liquid from a arrel or ot receptacle located below the room in which the pump is located, and to provide the latter with means for indicating the accurate amount of liquid drawn.

Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, and more particularly to Fig. 1, A is the pump-head o'r casing, in which the devices for operating and locking the'piston-rod 5 is contained. In one side of the pump-head is formed a hollow shaft a with spout a, through which the rod and b 'is a pipe communicating with rod b to draw li ui t e full distance.

A gear-wheel e journaled in the head A meshes with said rack e and is operated by the crank e which when rotated in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4 elevates the rack e,'and rotating the same inthe opposite direction will force the rack e and piston-rod b downward. In order to accurately measure the quantity of liquid drawn by the pump, it becomes necessary to absolutely control the movement of the piston and itsrod, that is to say the piston must travel a certain distance and at the end of this distance it must 0 erate an indicator to showthat it did travel If the endof this'distance is not reachedthere must he means to prevent a retrograde movement until that certain distance has been traveled, when the The spear C is composed of a pipe 0, closed at i indicator will be automatically actuated at x the completion of such full stroke of the pistonand indicate that a certain amount of iquid has-been drawn from the barrel D.

The shifting'into this position of tlie switchlever 11 causes the disengagement of the pawl i from the teeth of the rack e, and the engagement of the pawl i with a toothof the same rack, so that now the rack can only be moved downward, by rotating the crank e in the opposite direction from that indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4;, until the rack reaches its lowermost position, when the pin e near the top of the rack will shift the switch-l ever i into the position again as shown in Fig. 4. The switch-lever i is provided with stops for the pawls i and i to rest against and a spring i for each pawl tends to keep the latter in position against the stops i The switch-lever i is held in oneor the other position by friction obtained by inserting a spring-washer 71 between the switch-lever and the walls of the pump-head A.
To indicate or record the number of strokes of the piston b, an indicator of any. preferred make or style may be used and operatedby the rack e. In Figs. 4, 5, 8 and 9, is shownan indicator and its actuating mechanism, which are found simple and efficient; the indicator 0 shown is a Veeder, covered by U. S. Patent No. 548,482, of October 22, 1895, and is actuated by a lug e at the upper end of the rack e, which contacts with the lever 0 secured to the rock-shaft 0 j ournaled in the housing 0 of the indicator 0; at the other end of the rock shaft 0 is secured an arm 0 to which is hinged a pawl 0 engaging the teeth of'the ratchet-wheel 0 fastened to the shaft of the indicator 0; a spring 0 is employed to turn the ratchet-wheel and indicator disks, while theupward movement of the rack e and lug e causes the rocking of the shaft 0 against the action of the spring 0 and the engagement of the pawl o with the next tooth of the ratchet-wheel 0.

Having thusdescribed the nature and obj ects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pump for drawing and measuring liquid the combination of the piston-rod and its operating devices, with means for locking the rod against retrograde movement while moving in either direction, until the limit of the travel of the rod has been reached, means for switching the means for locking the rod when the latter moves in the opposite direction, and an indicator to indicate the'number of strokes of the said rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a pump for drawing and measuring liquid the combination of the iston-rod and its operating devices, a rack ormed on the piston-rod, a set of pawls, a switch-lever for said pawls, means for operating said switchlever, and an indicator forindicating the number of strokes of the piston-rod, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth. 3. In a pum for the purpose described the combination 0 the piston-rod and its operating devices, a rack attached to said pistonrod, a gear-wheel meshing with said rack and adapted to operate the same, a set of pawls, a switch lever controlling said pawls and actuated by pins on said rack to prevent the v movement of the rack in a direction opposite to that in which the gear-wheel forces the said rack, and an indicator adapted to be" automatically operated by said rack, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
