For this purpose I provide a univer sally adjustable support, consisting, as herein shown, of the following parts.
A tube 36 and a rod 37 telescoping the same constitute an extensible standard, said parts being provided at their outer ends with rigid spherical knobs or balls 38, and frictionally held in any longitudinally adjusted position as by means of a saring tongue 39 formed in the tube 36 by slitting the metal on either side of said tongue and bending the latter inwardly. Each of the knobs 38' engages a hollow longitudinally split and externally threaded boss I0, shown in detail in Fig. 4:, adapted to be compressed into gripping engagement with said knob by a nut 41. One of these hollow bosses is secured to the under side of the base-plate 10, while the other is formed on the upper end of a screw 42, which latter has threaded engagement with the upper arm of a clampmember 43 adaptc'l to engage over the front edge of the top h arizontal wall of an open camera case or box, the screw 42 having on its lower end a head 44 constituting the upper member of the clamp. The ball joints shown at the upper and lower ends of the extensible standard are both universal angular joints; so that the powderpan can readily be adjusted to any desired angular position, as well as on any side of thecamera, to produce the best lighting effect, while its distance iroin the camera can be regulated by the extensible support.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly modilied form of match-scratcher bar, consisting of a bar 34 of substantially V-form in crosssection, so that the head of the match as it rubs the same, engages the roughened friction surface on two of its sides, rather than simply on its tip, as in the form shown in Itip's. l and 2. This last-described form of scratcher-bar is best adapted for ordinary matches having headsof a single composition, while the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is best adapted for a type of match now extensively used that is provided with a spe cial ignition tip designed to prevent the flying of burning particles of the head when the match is scratched.
I am aware that flash light devices adapted to be operated at a distance through the ignition of the charge by electric means, and by the firing of a cap through the agency of a spring-actuated hammer, are old, as also the ignition of a charge through the release of a spring-actuated sweep having a roughened surface adapted to rub over the heads of one or more stationary fuses surrounded by a charge of powder. So far as I am aware, however, my present invention is broadly novel in the employment of a spring-actuated. device adapted to hold a match and rub the latter over a striker-bar to ignite it in such a manner as to bring the head of the match, when ignited, into ignit- Q ing juxtaposition to a charge of powder. IIence, while I have shown and described. what I believe to be the best and most practicable form of my invention, yet it should be understood that the same may be varied and modilied to a considerable extent in respect to details without involving any departure from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I claim:
1. In a flash-light apparatus, the combination with a powder-pan, of a'rotary springactuated match-holder adapted to support a match radially thereof, a detent for said match-holder, a curved gravity scratcherbar having a roughened under surface overlying said match-holder, said scratcher being pivotally supported at one end with its free end overhanging said powder-pan, and means for releasing said detent, substantially as described.
2. In a [lash-light attachment for cameras, the combination with base-plate formed at one end to constitute a powder-pan, of a springactuated matchholder rotatably mounted above said base-plate and provided with a radial support for a match, a radial detent arm carried by said match-holder, a pneumatically operated catch for said detentarm mounted on the opposite end of Said base-plate from said powder-pan, a supporting bracket n'iounted on said base-plate, a curved scratcher-bar having a roughened. under surface hinged at one end to said sup porting bracket with its free end overlying said powder-pan, and an angularly adjustable support for said base-plate adapted to be attached to a camera, substantially as described.
In a flash-light apparatus, the combination with a base-plate formed at one end to constitute a powder-pan, of a match-holder journaled above said base-plate and comprising a springmctnated shaft and a hollow radially disposed tnbe thereon adapted for the insertion of the stem of a match, a pivoted gravity scratcher-bar disposed above and transversely of said shaft, a detent for holding the shaft of said match-holder against the tension of its actuating spring, and means for releasing said detent, substantially as described.
4.
