Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHESTER W. CANINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Marking-Machines for Laundry Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

gether may be set in operative position most expeditiously, and the invention consists of that certain novel construction and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed.

5 is the front casing,which in its upper part6 is semi-cylindrical in shape, and is provided with a series of slots 7 for the passage of the operating handles of the mechanism.
Strung on the shaft 8, journaled across the machine in the side standards 4, 4 are a series of sector plates 9, provided with gear teeth 10, and each sector plate meshes with the type teeth 11 of a corresponding series of t pe wheels 12, which are mounted on the shaft 13 secured across the frame. On the outside of the casing along side of the slots 7 the letters of the alphabet and numerals from O to 9 are indicated in vertical series 60, and each sector plate is provided with an arm 14, which extends up through its proper slot 7. For economy of space, the sector plates and type wheels are mounted almost in contact with each other, and side extensions 15 are-formed on the upper end of the sector lates, so that each arm 14 may be arranged in proper position to pass'through its proper slot in the case. The arms 14 are united to therespective extensions of the sector plates 64, raising the plate by the screws 16 which take into block 61 riveted to the end of the arms, the arms be ing slotted at 62, so that their position can be properly adjusted, while a horizontal tongue 63 on each arm 14 takes into a corresponding groove in its respective block to prevent the arm from'turnmg;
Mounted on each arm outside the casin is a toothed plate 17, whichtakes into notches 18, which are arranged opposite each letter and numeral lengthwise of the slots, and these plates are raised by the finger latch 64 to permit movement of the arms from one position to another. These finger latches 64 are pivoted as indicated on the casing leased the toothed plate will find a seat with-x in. the notches opposite the desired letter.
By pressing the arm across and back of all of the atches all of the lates will be raised and all of the arms may e brought down to the lowest position simultaneously. lhe type for the letters and numerals are arranged on the periphery of the type wheels at the end of the teeth, and the parts are so constructed that when the arm on any sector late is brought down opposite any particu ar letter or numeral, the sector plate shall rotate its type wheel to bring the corresponding type into printing position at the opening 22 in the front casing.
In order to set the printing of any desired name, or series of'nutype wheels for the morals, the operator grasps the finger latch 17 and brings the arm down 'opposite the particular letter desired, and this movement will set the type wheel in the proper position. It is not necessary to reset the sector plates, and type wheels for new names, but the arms can e moved directly to the new position. These arms can be operated very rapidly.
In order to guide the movement of the sector plates each plate is provided with a slot 23, which rides on the rod 24 supported across the machine in the side standards 4, 4, while to properly separate the sector plates and prevent engagement with an adjoining type wheel this rod 24 is provided with a series of teeth 66, forming a comb for spacing the plates, the rod being mounted with the comb teeth in horizontal position.
25 is the printing lever carrying the platen 26, and this lever is pivoted in the bottom of the case on the shaft 27, which carries an arm 28 connected by the link 29 to the arm 30 on the rock shaft31; This rock shaft carries also the segmental hook plate 32 pivoted at V 43 of a rock shaft 39,, which rock shaft is provided with the arms 38 carrying the segment movement of the segment rack 40 after the gears 40, which mesh with the teeth 41 on the inner curved ends of the inking bar 42, which bars carry at their outer end the inking pad 44, which receives its ink from a pad 45 pivotally mounted in the casing, and provided with a projection 46 against which the end of the inking bar bears to keep the two pads in close contact.
As the printing lever 25 is pushed by the handles 47 toward the machine, the rock shaft 31 is rocked, which in turn actuates the segment gears 40 to rock or draw down the inking bar 42. The inking pad on the bar is pressed against the type, and the further movement of the hook plate 32 causes it to slip off of the roller pin 37, and the inking bar is returned to its coiled spring 48 attached between the upper end of one arm 38 and the casing. .The
inking pad has been brought down over the type exposed through the opening 22, draws the inking bar 42 inward to press the pad-on the type, and causes the notch 49 on the inthe prmtinglever presses the ner end of the inking bars to engage the roller pins 50 on the standard, so that in the return movement the inking bar and the pad will be thrown forward before it can be returned to its normal position to prevent the inking pad from rubbing upon and smearing the case upon its return movement.
The operation of the machine will be evident from the foregoing description. The operator first sets the type wheels for any name or series of numerals desired by bringing down the arms 14 on the sector plates opposite the proper letters or numerals. The goods to be marked are then placed over the platen 26 and the printing lever raised by the handles 47. This movement as heretofore described causes the inking pad to ink the type, and the further movement inward of platen and goods against the type to imprint the de sired name or numbers thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a marking machine for laiindry articles in combination with a fixed case, a plurality of type wh' els, each provided with a series of type forming gear teeth with a shaft normal position by the.

In a marking machine for laundry arti-" cles in combination with a fixed case, a plurality of type wheels, each provided with a series of type forming gear teeth with a shaft mounted in fixed position in the case, upon which shaft the type wheels are strung, and a corresponding number of oscillating sector plates meshing therewith, each provided I with an arm for operating said sector a cover plate with longitudinal slots t lerein, through which said arms extend, witha series of letters and numerals indicated on the easing opposite said slots, whereby the setting of the arms opposite any particular letter will bring a corresponding letter on the intermeshing type wheel to printing position and. a platen bearing pivoted lever for impressing the goods to be marked on the selected type.

In a marking machine for laundry arti-' cles, which said wheels are strung'in contact with each other, a corresponding number of oscillating sector plates, a shaft'upon which said plates are mounted, and a slot in each plate with a rod mounted in the casing passing through said slots to guide the plates, said rod carrying teeth to form a spacing bar for spacing apart the sector plates, to compel engagement thereof each with its corresponding ty e wheel.
