IMPROVEMENT IN ALARMS FOR SAILING-VESSELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent. and making part of the' same.
To whom it ma/y concern Be it known that I, ZADOCK PANGBORN, of Al: gonac, in the county of St. Clair, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Alarms for Sailing-Vessels; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,
and to the letters of I reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, with parts broken away to show the interior mechanism.

The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of an apparatus designed to be employed on board of sailing-vessels, for the purpose of giving alarms, and to perform the functions for which steam-whistles on steamboats are designed.
I design, by this apparatus, to produce, as may be desired, a continuous or intermittent sound, by means of a whistle or horn, to be used in fogs, and for signals.-
My invention consists in suitable whistles, or single or. compound horns, which are attached, by means of the necessary pipes, to the. side of the fixed cylinder on the top of the flexible-one, and the pipes are fitted with proper cocks or valves, by means of which the air is admitted to or shut'otf fi-om the whistles or horns. 1
A, 'in the drawings, represents a circular bellows, constructed of any suitable material, the lower end of which is secured to a metallic or other head, B, through which is an aperture for the admission of air, and which is provided with a proper valve. I
G are cars and circular slides rigidly attached to the head B, and having a reciprocating motion communicated to said head by means of the pitman D, connecting arms E, rock-shaft F, and lever G, said slides working on the vertical guides H.
The upper end of the'bellows A is secured to the bottom of the cylinder I, which also is provided with a suitable aperture and valve for the admission of air from the bellows. p
The cylinder I is a fixed one, and may be made of metal, or any other proper material, secured to a frame, J, within which the bellows A operates, and to which the rock-shaft and vertical. guides'O are also secured.
The top of the cylinder I, has an opening therein, corresponding in size with the flexible reservoir K, which is constructed of the same material and size as the bellows.
The two reservoirs I and K are secured together, as shown, and to the top of the reservoir K, or to the side of thefixed cylinder I, may be secured proper pipes L, one or more, communicating from the interior of the cylinders to the whistle or horns, or both, if it is desired to use both.
The head M of the rserigoir K is provided with ears N, which are secured to the tops of the guidingrods 0, which pass downward into the hollow standards P of the frame J, and work therein.
R are coilsprings around the rods 0, and within the hollow standards P, and so secured to said rods that when the reservoir K is distended by being filled with air, the action of the springs tends to draw down the head M, thereby compressing the air within the reservoir, and giving it additional force in its passage to the whistle.
Should the apparatus be placed in theafter-part of the vessel, and it becomes necessary to sound the alarm near the bow of the same, this may be done by means of leather or other pipe extending fi-om the reservoir to the whistle or horn used.
I do not intend to confine myself exclusively to the device, as shown, but may modify the same by giving motion to the bellows by means of a crank and connections, as shown in fig. 2.
I may also connect the heads 13 and M, by means of connecting-rods, in such a manner that the downward stroke of the connecting-rods will compel the head M to compress the air in the reservoirs, and force it through the whistles or horns.
Such compression may be effected by simply placing weights upon the head M.
Suitable guides and flanges may be provided to guide the rods 0 and secure the action of the coil-springs It, or the rods may be thrown out entirely, and suitable springs connecting the -bottom'of cylinderI with the head M, will produce the same result.
1 What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the bellows A, head B, ears 0, pitmen D, arms E, rock-shaft F, lever G, guides H, fixed 'cylinder I, frame J, flexible reservoir K, pipes L, head M, ears N, guiding-rods O, hollow standards 1?, and coil-springs R, or their equivalents, wit-hany suitable whistles or horns; the whole combined .and. operating substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
