HARRY M. SMITH, OF NEAR KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOH T() FRANK J. JONES, 0F KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
COOKING-RANGE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 20, 190B.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 428,203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that il, HARRY M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing near Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of "Tennessee, 'have invented a fnew and useful Improvement in Cooking-Ranges, of which the following lis a specification, reference bcing had 'to the accompanying drawing.-
My invention relates to cooking `ranges com rising oven chambers.
7D 1e 4object of the invention is to Aprovide forlthe economical utilization of heat for the heating of the oven chambers.
=In`the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an upright seotio'nfon the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fi 2 is -an upright section on the line 22 o Fig. 3; Fig. is an elevation `of one o f the upright 'walls of the range; Fig. 4 is a lan of -a ,portion tof the top of the range; if is a perspective of thegrate.
y Way of general description, it may be stated that, in the Aform shown -in the drawings, the range comprises four oveny chambers in the body of the range and -a fifth oven chamber extendingfpartially above the body of `'the range The said four oven chambers are separated farenough Ifrom each other to permit the p'lacin `of the lire grate intermediate said cham ers so that fire upon said grate will transmit heat to all of said chambers. And all of said chambers are so separated from each other as to increase thenumber of walls which can receive heat from said fire. Two of said oven chambers'have openings or doors through one of the u right Walls of the range and the other two o said chambers have openings or doors through the opposite upright wall of the range. For convenience 1n description, said walls will be herein termed the side walls of the range, while the other two upright walls of the ran e are termed the end walls. Said end wal s cover the ends of said oven chambers as well as the fire box and lues.
A, A designate said side walls; B, B designate said end walls; and C designates the bottom wall. Said side and end walls are preferably extended below said bottom wall to hold the latter above the floor, as shown in the drawings.
D, D are horizontal top plates, between which rises a half-cylindrical tubular top plate, E. A
F, F are two lower oven chambers each Vformed by the bottom wall, C, side walls, A, end walls, B, an upright Wall, 1, and a slop* ing top wall, 2. The walls, l, 1, are soparated sufficiently to make la space for an ash pan, Said oven chambers have doors, 4, 4. Above each chamber, F,is an oven cham ber, G, each formed by the side walls, A, cud walls,B, a bottom wall, 5,' a low upright wall, 6, and a sloping upper wall, 7. Said walls, 6, 6, are separated from each other sulficiently to make room for a lire box; and the bottom walls, 5, 5, are high enough above the top walls, 2, of the chambers, F, to form a space, I, at each side of the grate, 8. At the level of the lower edges of said sidewalls is located a trough-form grate, S, having at its ends journals, 9, extending through bear ings, 10, in the end walls, B, of the range. The projecting ends of said journals may be engaged for `turning said `journals and the grate for dumping ashes or cinders from the grate into said ash pan. Within the halfcylindrical top plate, E, and extending a little below the level of the tgp plates, D, is a cylindrical oven chamber, the'endsol whlch are formed by the end walls, B, of the range. At each end -of said chamber is a door, 11. In the space between the oven chamber, H, and the oven chambers, G, G, is a delector, 12, secured to the end walls, B, B, of the range and to the chamber, H, by means ofconnecting pieces, 13. A pipe liuc, 14, rises from the upperportion of the hall`- cylindrical top: late, 'E
The course ci? the products of combustion from the fire box or sp ace in and immediately above the grate is through the space between the slo ing top walls ofthe chambers, G, and the dellector, 12, around the side edges of the latter and beneath the top plates, D, and then around the cylindrical chamber, H, and into the flue pipe, 14. Such products of combustion impart heat to the to Walls, 7 of the chambers, G, and to the ellector, 12, and heat radiated upward from the fire box meets said deflector and is turned downward thereby to said walls, 7. The short u ward walls, 6, of the chambers, G, are heate by conduction and radiation from the fire located between said walls. And by means of the s aces, I, I, heat is transmitted to the bottom p ates, 5, of the chambers, G, G, and the top walls, 2, of the chambers, F, F. From the fire upon the grate, there is lateral radiation into said spaces, I, I, the heat rays striking the inclined top walls, 2, and im )arting a portion. of their heat thereto and lbeing dclccted upward so as to strike the bottom plates, 5, 5. A greater quantity of heat is made to enter said spaces, I, by extending said grate below the level ol the bottom walls, 5, 5,' for, under such arrangement, a considcrable portion of the body of fire is in position to permit direct radiation into the spaces, I, l. lleat is also radiated downward from the fire on the grate to the u )right walls, 1, 1, of the oven chambers, F, i". Thus heat is imparted to three walls of the chambers, G, G, and to two walls of the chambers, F, F.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a cooking range, an oven chamber, a fire grate located beside the lower portion of said chamber, another oven chamber located below said first mentioned chamber and se arated therefrom by a s ace, and walls whic i, with the adjacent walls of said chambers, form a space passing beside said chambers and containing said grate and connecting with the space between said chambers, substantially as described.
2. In a cooking lrange, an oven chamber, a fire grate located beside the lower portion of said chamber, another oven chamber located below said first mentioned chamber and separated therefrom by a s ace fully open toward said grate, and wa ls which, with the adjacent walls of said chambers, form a space passing beside said chambers and containing said grate and connecting with the space between said chambers, substantially as described.
3. In a cooking range, two horizontallyT opposite oven chambers, another two horizontally opposite oven chambers located above said first mentioned chambers and separated therefrom by spaces and separated from each other by a space, a lire grate located in the lower portion of the s ace between said upper chambers, and wa ls forming a flue passage leadin(T from the s ace above said grate, substantialIy as descri ed.
4. In a cooking range, two horizontally opposite oven chambers, another two horizontally opposite oven chambers located above said `lirst mentioned chambers and separated therefrom by spaces and separated from each other by a space, a fire grate located in the lower portion of the space between said upper chambers, and walls forming a ilue passage leading from the s nace above said grate across the upper walls of said upper chambers, substantially as described,
5. In a cooking range, two horizontally opposite oven chambers separated from each other by a space, another two horizontally opposite oven chambers located above said first mentioned chambers and separated therefrom by spaces and separated from each other by a space, a fire grate located in the lower portion of the s ace between said upper chambers, and wa ls forming a [lue passage leading from the s ace above said grate, substantially as descri ed.
6. In a cooking range, two horizontally opposite oven chambers separated from each other by a space, another two horizontally opposite oven chambers located above said first mentioned chambers and separated therefrom by spaces and separated from each other by a space, a lire grate located in the lower portion of the s ace between said upper chambers, and wa ls forming a flue passage leading from the space above said grate across the upper walls of said upper chambers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed 1n name, in presence of two witnesses, this 16t l day of April, in the year one thousand nine hundred and eight.
