BAKE-OVEN LAMP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. Moonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellsworth, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bake-Oven Lamps and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, refer ones being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a lamp that is designed to be used in connection with baking-ovens and adapted to be placed in an opening in the wall of an oven for the pur pose of illuminating the interior of the oven, the invention having reference particularly to a bake-oven lamp that is designed to generate gas for its use from gasolene or similar fluid while in use.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved. lamp for balre-ovens that will produce brilliant illumination in abake-oven to facilitate the baking operations, or the handling of the product in the oven; a further object being to provide an improved bake-oven lamp that may be operated economically and conveniently.

Vi ith the above-mentioned and other objects in view the invention consists in an improved lamp comprising a base on which is mounted. a burner, a gas generator, a mixer, and a reflector, all of novel forms of construction in detail and novel arrangement; and the invention consists further in the parts, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the accompanying claims.

Similar reference characters in the various figures of the drawings indicate like elements or features of construction.

The improved lamp comprises a base 1 which may be suitably composed of metal or of wood, as may be preferred, and preferably has an end projection 1 that is somewhat narrower than the body portion of the base, so as to extend into the opening or recess that is required in the wall of the bake-oven, thus permitting the side walls of the opening to converge inward and permit the base to support the lamp burner in relatively close relation to the inner side of the oven wall. A hollow burner-stand 2 is provided with a flange 2 by which it is suitably secured to the narrower end portion 1 of the base, the stand being connected by a gas supply pipe comprising a horizontal portion 3 that extends from the burner stand obliquely toward one side of the base 1, an elbow 4 connected to the portion 3, and a vertical por tion 5 connected to the elbow and extending upward a suitable distance above the base at one side of the burner-stand. The burnerstand 2 is open at its top and has a hollow burner 6 removably mounted thereon, preferably fitting over the upper portion thereof and resting on the portion 3 of the supply pipe, the burner having a top 7 in which are perforations 7, the top supporting an upright rod 8, on which a mantle 9 is supported. It should be understood, however, that the rod for supporting the mantle may be otherwise supported if preferred. The burner 6 has a perforated flange 10 suitably attached thereto, on which is supported a relatively large globe or chimney 11 that extends about the burner and mantle and somewhat higher than the top of the mantle, the flange having also a chimney holder 12 thereon that is adapted to hold a relatively smaller chimney in position in case a small chimney is desired. This burner or lamp proper is of simple and inexpensive construction, and admirably serves the purpose, but other forms of burners obviously may be employed within the scope of the invention.

On the opposite side of the base 1 to that on which the upright portion 5 of the supply pipe is arranged, an elbow 13 which has a flange 13 is mounted and suitably secured to the base by means of the flange, and a supply-pipe 1.4 is connected to the elbow and extends rearward and is secured to the base by a clamp 15, a regulating valve 16 being connected to the pipe 14 for admitting gasolene or similar liquid hydrocarbon to the pipe 14 and regulating the supply thereto, the valve being near the rear or outer end of the base, so as to be easily accessible to the attendant. The pipe 17 is connected to the elbow 1.3 and extends upward above the plane of the top of the chimney and has an elbow 13 connected to the top thereof, a generator-pipe 19 being connected to the elbow 18, the pipe 1.9 being bent or curved, so as to extend forward from the elbow over the axis of the burner or directly above the lamp-globe or chimney, and rearward to a point nearly above the portion 5 of the supply-pipe, the part 19 being horizontal and having a tee 20 connected thereto that has one of its openings closed by a removable plug 21., and a pipe 22 is connected to the tie and extends downward toward the portion 5 of the gassupply pipe, the plug 21 being opposite to the u per end of the pipe 22, so that access may e had to the pipe when the plug is removed. The lower end of the pipe 22 has a plug 23 therein, in which is a small central aperture 24 for the escape of gas, and the pipe 22 has a suitable quantity of cotton or similar material 25 therein to serve as a purifier and strainer for the gas on its way to the burner. The lower end of the pipe 22 has external screw-threads 26 thereon, and a tubular mixer 27 has internal screw-threads 28 in one end thereof by which the mixer is secured removably to the pipe 22, the other end of the mixer having a sleeve-shaped end 29 extending over the upper end of the portion 25 of the supply pipe, and the middle portion of the mixer has apertures 30 in the wall thereof, so that when gas escapes from the aperture 24 into the portion 5 of the su ply pipe, a suitable quantity of air may e drawn in and mixed with the gas, and the quantity of air may be regulated by screwing the mixer farther onto the pipe 22, so as to partially close the apertures 30; and when it may be desired to remove obstructions from the aperture 24 the mixer may be unscrewed from the pipe 22 and slipped down over portion 5 of the supply pipe.

32 and 32 secured thereto and embracing the pipe 17, one strap resting on the elbow 13, the reflector curving around the rear of the lamp chimney to the pipe 22 and the portion 5 of the supply pipe, and has a spring-catch 33 mounted thereon adapted to be detachably connected to the portion 5 for holding the reflector in operative posi tion, and permitting the reflector when unlatched to swing away, so that the attendant may have access to the lamp chimney and mantle.

Preferably a brace 34 is secured to the base 1, and also to the portion 5 of the supply pipe to brace the pipe, and the base is provided with a handle 35 whereby to carry the lamp or to adjust its position.

In order to clearly explain the purposes and advantages of the improved lamp it is combined with a bake-oven 36, the front 37 of which has an opening 33 therein that is closed at its inner end by a plate of mica 39 or similar material, and the bottom 40 of the opening is flat and adapted to support the base 1 of the lamp which is mounted in the opening with the narrower end 1 close to the mica 39. h opening is preferably broader at the outer side of the oven wall than at the inner side, so as to all'ord space for the attendant to renew the lamp chimney or mantle when required without removing the lamp from the opening. he front 37 has a door 41 for the insertion and removal of the articles to be balied, and a lire-door 42 is also provided, 43 indicating the bottom or the oven on which the baking is done.

The supply pipe 44 is connected to the valve 16 and has a reservoir 45 connected thereto for supplying gasolene or similar fluid to the lamp, the reservoir being preferably provided with a pump 46, r the reservoir may be placed at a sufliciently high level to obtain gravity pressure tor forcing the liquid to the lamp. It should be understood that the reservoir 45 may be placed. in any suitable position at a sale distance from the oven, and the pipe 44 may, if desired, be flexible, so that the lamp may be readily removed from its operative position or replaced thereto.

In practical use, having provided for a flow of gasolene to the valve 16, the valve may be opened slightly and the reflector 31 may be swung aside, and then the attendant may hold a torch under the generator-pipe 19 to heat it and convert the gasolene into gas in the generator-pipe. The gas will pass through the purifying-pipe 22 and escape from the aperture 24, and draw air therewith into the supply-pipe connected with the mixer, and thence into the burner-stand 2 from which it will pass out of the perforations 7 and will then be ignited, the flame or incandescent combustion producing the required light, and also the necessary heat under the generator-pipe 19 for continuing the generation of gas to be consumed by the burner. The supply of gasolene and conse quently the supply of gas may be regulated by means of the valve 16, and. the light may be extinguished by closing the valve.

It will be seen from the foregoing, that the lamp may be used advantageously not only with bake-ovens, but in many situations where a strong light is desired and in air currents where oil lamps would be at a disadvantage.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A lamp including a base, a hollow burner-stand secured upon the base and having a gas-supply pipe connected therewith, a burner on the burner-stand, a vertical pipe mounted rigidly on the base, a horizontal pipe connected with the vertical pipe, a curved. horizontal generator-pipe connected with the vertical pipe and extending over the burner, a purifying-pipe connected with the generator-pipe, a mixer connected with the purifying pipe and also with the gas-supply pipe, and a reflector hinged to the vertical pipe.

2. A lamp including a base, a hollow burner-stand secured on one end of the base and having a gas-supply pipe connected therewith, a burner mounted on the burnerstand and having a flange thereon, the burner having also a perforated top, a rod mounted on the burner, a mantle supported on the rod, a chimney supported by the flange, a vertical pipe mounted rigidly on the base, a horizontal pipe connected with the vertical pipe, a valve connected with the horizontal pipe, a generator-pipe connected with the vertical pipe, a purifying-pipe connected with the generator-pipe, and a mixer connected with the purifying-pipe and also with the gas-supply pipe.

A lamp including a base having a projecting end, a hollow burner-stand secured on the projecting end of the base an d having a gas-supply pipe connected. therewith, a burner on the burnerstand and having a flange thereon, a rod. supported by the burner, a mantle supported by the rod, a chimney supported on the flange, an elbow secured on the base and having a supplypipe connected thereto, a valve connected to the supply-pipe, a vertical pipe connected to the elbow, a curved horizontal generator-pipe connected with the vertical pipe and extending over the mantle and the burner, a puritying-pipe connected with the generator-pipe, a plug in the purifying-pipe and having an aperture therein, fibrous material in the purifying-pipe, and a tubular mixer having aperturcs therein and screwed onto the purifyingpipe and also connected to the gas-supply pipe.

4. A lamp including a base, a hollow burner-stand secured upon the base, a gassupply pipe having a horizontal portion that is connected to the burner-stand and having also an upright portion, a burner on the burner-stand and having a flange thereon, a chimney supported on the flange, a mantle supported on the burner, a brace secured to the base and also to said upright portion, a handle attached to the top of the base, a vertical pipe mounted rigidly on the base, a horizontal pipe connected with the vertical pipe, a generator-pipe connected with the vertical pipe, a purifying-pipe connected with the generator-pipe, a mixer connected with the purifying-pipe and also with said. upright ortion of the gas-supply pipe, and a reflector hinged to the vertical pipe and having catch thereon normally engaging said up right portion.

5. A bake-oven lamp comprising a base having a projecting end, a hollow burnerstand having a projection that is secured. on the projecting end, a gas-supply pipe having a horizontal portion that is connected to the burner-stand and having also an upright portion, a brace secured to the base and also to said upright portion, a handle attached to said base, a burner on the burner-stand, an elbow having a flange that is secured to the base, a supply pipe connected to the elbow, a vertical pipe connected. to the elbow, a generator-pipe connected with the vertical pipe and extending horizontally over the burner, the generator-pipe being bent at its middle portion and having a tee connected thereto, a purifyingpipe connected to the tee, a plug in the tee opposite the purifyingpipe, librous material in the purilying-pipe, a mixer connected removably to the purifying-pipe and also to the said upright portion of the gas-supply pipe, and a reflector hinged to the vertical pipe and having a catch thereon normally engaging said upright por tion.
