No. 926,964. Specification of Application led August 4,
To all whom it may concern: V- l Be it known that I, CARL SCHRADER, a sub'ect of the German Emperor, and residing l Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coils, of which the following is a specification.I
The present invention relates to coils, l particularlyfor electrical purposes, and an important object is to provide improved electrical conductors which can readily be wound into a coil having a large cross-sectional area. V
In all instances .in electromagnetic ap aratus for heavy currents Ahaving a pluraiity when it is a matter of importance to obtain as good utilization as possible of the space which is limited to a minimum amount, as is known great difficulties are met with in constructing and arranging such windings and their ends.- This isvery noticeable particularly when constructing electromagnetic apparatus for hi h tensions, such as transformers for examp e, in which case, on account of it being necessary to observe 'definite aths and spaces for insulation, a useless -en arge,e ment of the winding-space, which is connected with considerable use f material, and a positively injurious inereae in length of the enlarged iron cores.
N ow an important object of the presentinvention is to provide conductors for making, in a more simple manner, coils having two-or mbre turns of large cross-sectional area, so that not onl are the above mentioned defects avoided,r but in addition the advantage is obtained of being able to employ such coils particularly vfor closed iron cores, in which case the arrangement of the windings lcustomary heretofore isl connected with special technical difficulties.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing in which one en1bodi ment is represented by way of example, and in which:
Figure 1 is a/sectional elevation of a coil according to the present' invention, whereas Fig. 2 is a front elevation of part of a strip of metal prepared ready for being wound into a l comprisin Letters Patent. Patented July 6. 1909.
1908. Serial No. 446,973.
coil. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a strip two complementary halves. dng coils of two or .more turns, according to the present invention suitably long strips of metal p1, p2, etc., corresponding to the number of turns necessary in each case are employed which are provided at suitable distances corresponding to the circumference of each turn with suitably shaped holes I which serve for the passage 'of the inner end of the coil and for insu ation around the same. Such coils can be particularly con- For ma vemently wound, since at each turn the pcr-A forated .places of the strip of metal is simply placed over the previously bent, insulated, inner end, and the latter is finally mechanic ally connected with the other end of the iinished coil. Both ends are separated from one another by an insulating layer and form thel connections of the coil. In coils 'which are made in this manner both the' noxious .space which is produced on account of the mside or commencing end of the coil being brought out laterally, and the enlargement of the coil or of the iron core which is to be wound which is thereby occasioned are avoided. On account of the inner end being passed through the individual turns, the coil is simultaneously prevented from flying open. The manner in which such coil is made will be readily understood from Figs. 1 and 2; a is the outer end ofthe strip of metal which is provided with holes Z at dcnite intervals corresponding tothecircum- .ference of each turn. inner or commencing end b and insulated from the sides posed holes in the winding,
is passed through,
of the superand after the strip has beenv wound up the commencing end is connected with the outer end e, a layer of insulation being placed between them: I v
The commencing end of the coil does' not always require to be brought out in the center of the strip, as shown 1n Fi s. 1 and 2 of The preliminarily bent the accompanying drawing, ut may be passed through the same at optional places', for example at either edge also. Also under certain circumstances, for example when specially long coilsl have to he wound, it is preferable to subdivide the strip longitudinally, for example in suchmanner that as pim-@my of shown in Fig. 3 the strip Consists of two symmetrical hal ves L and' o. The holes l and l through which the inner or commencing ends l) and li are to pass are at one edge of each half strip.
What l olaiiu my invention and deeire to secure by Letters ljateiit is:
l. T he herein-described coil consisting o' a plurality of superposecl broad strips oi metal corresponding in breadth to the breadth of the Coil and having` at definite intervals holes in the same corresponding to the separate turns of the oeil, through which holes the commencing end of the coil passes to the outside.
2. The herein-described coil consisting oi" a plurality of superposecl broad strips. of metal corresponding in breadth to the breadth of the coil and having at delinite intervals holes at one edge of the same Corresponding to the separate turns of the coil:l through which holes the commencing end ot the coil to the outside.
3. The herein-described coil consisting o a euperposed luoad strips of metal divided longitudinally into symmetrical .halves and having at ilenite intervalo holes eaaoea at one edge of each half of the same corresponding' to the separato 'turns ol" the (foil, through 'which holes the Cmuiuoueiup; oud o l" 'the eoil passes to the outside.
The l1eieir1(lesoiil)e l coil consisting of one h ioad strip of metall correspoudiug iu hreadth to the lxioadth of the coil and liaviigfy at definito intervals moles in the same Corro- S'ponding to the separate turns of the coil, through 'Whiel'i holes the limer or commencing end of the coil passes to the outside.
5. The hereiwdesorilzed lu'oad stri p of metal having; a, plurality of holes iu the same, the distauees hetweei'i oaeh two adjacent holes heing equal to the Corresponding: circumference of the individual turns of a coil Composed of said strip of" metal, substantially as described, with. reference to the drawing.
ln. testimony whereof l. have signed my name to this speeilieatifjru in the presence of two Witnesses. l
