HARRISON G. BURROWS OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAS-COCK FOR GAS-RANGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .iui e, 1909.
Application filed February 19, 1906. Serial No. 301,752.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON G. BUR- Rows, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Gas-Cocks for Gas-Ranges, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide novel gas-cock for gas ranges which may be automatically locked in its closed position, thereby preventing it from becoming accidentally opened so that the gas may escape.
All gas-cocks, as far as I am aware, are provided with a handle rigid with the plug of the gas-cock. According to my invention I substitute for this rigid handle a pivoted handle so constructed that when the gas cock is closed the handle may be dropped into its locking position, in which position it will engage the gas main to which the gascock is applied, and thereby prevent accidental opening of the gascock. In order to open the valve the pivoted handle is swung up into its horizontal position above the gas main when the valvemay be opened as usual.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a gas main having my improved gas-cock applied thereto, and also showing a portion of the burner; Fig. 2 is a side view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a front view of the construction shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 shows in side View a gas-cock as usually constructed.
3 designates the gas main or gas pipe which extends along the side of a gas range and into which the gas-cock or gas-cocks 4 are tapped, and 5 designates a side of a gas range through which the burner 6 projects. Usually the gas-cocks 4 are provided with a plug 7 having secured thereto a handle 8 which is usually of wood and screwed into the top of the plug 7 as at 90, said handle and plug be ing rigid with each other. Oftentimes the plug will work so easily in the casing of the gas-cock that a very slight pressure on the handle will open the valve and when a gascook gets into this condition the valve is very likely to become accidentally opened. To avoid this danger, I have substituted for the ordinary wooden handle 8 the jointed handle herein shown which comprises a handle portion proper 9 and a stem 10 to which the handle portion 9 is pivoted, said stem being provided with screw threads and adapted to be screw threaded into the gas-cock 7. When the gas-cock 4 is closed the handle stands parallel to the gas main 3 and because it is pivoted to the gas-cock it may drop into the full line position, Figs. 2 and 3. When in this position it lies against the gas main 3 and therefore absolutely prevents the gascock from being opened.
In order to open the gas-cock the handle is swung up into horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, thereby permitting the plug 7 to be turned to open the gas-cock. When the gas-cock is open the handle stands in the dotted line position, Figs. 1 and 2 in which position it may drop onto the gas main 3 but cannot drop behind it. With my improved device, therefore, the valve is automatically locked in its closed position, but cannot be locked in its open position.
One advantage of my improvement is that the handles embodying my invention may be substituted for the ordinary handles now in use on most gas ranges without in any way changing the construction of the range or the gas cook.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- In a gas range, the combination with a gas main, of a gas cook connected thereto and extending at right angles therefrom, said gas cook having a valve plug adapted for turning movement, the upper end of which is situated above the main, and a handle pivoted to the upper end of the valve plug and adapted to swing down into vertical position, said handle having such a shape that when the cock is closed and the handle is swung down into vertical position it engages the side of the gas main and thereby locks the cock from turning movement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRISON G. BURROWS.
