Description

I. GLUO-KMAN.
GARBAGE GAN.
APPLICATION FILED 11110.12, 1908.
Patented July 6,1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GARBAGE-CAN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISADORE GLUoKMAN, a subject of the Kin of Roumania, residing at Minneapolis, in t e county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enab e others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its especial object to provide an improved garbage can, and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the improved garbage can; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken centrally through the improved can; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the can; and Fig. 4 is a detail view in side elevation, showing on a larger scale than in the other views an improved lock for locking the cover to the can body.
The numeral 1 indicates the cylindrical body of the improved can, the same having, as shown, a multiplicity of longitudinally extended circumferentially spaced reinforcing slats 2, preferably constructed of wood, and secured thereto by rivets. These slats 2 very greatly increase the strength of the can and serve to protect the same against indentations. A quite heavy metal hoop 3 is telescoped on to the lower end of the can 1 and projects below the bottom thereof, so as to afford means for supporting the can with its bottom out of contact with the ground. The upward. movement of the hoop 3 on the can is, as shown, limited by an outwardly pressed annular crease 4 formed in the can body.
The upper edge of the can is preferably formed with an outward bead 5, over which the depending flange of the can cover 6 loosely telescopes. This cover 6 is provided with a hand piece 7 of suitable construction. Preferably this hand piece is formed by the upwardly bowed intermediate ortion of a metal strap 8, which is secure to the said Specification of Letters Patent.

cover by rivets and the ends of which are first bent vertically downward against the depending flange of the said cover and then are turned horizontally outward to afford lock lugs 9 that are located at diametrically opposite points.
At diametrically opposite oints on the upper portion of the can 1, ock brackets, preferably afforded by metal straps 10, are rigidly secured preferably by rivets. The upper portions of these straps 10 are bent outward and their vertically extended upper ends are formed with lock notches 11 located in each edge thereof. These notches 11, and especially the upper edges thereof, are inclined slightly, so that when by rotation of the cover the lugs 9 of the stra s 8 are engaged therewith, the cover wil be drawn down tightly onto the upper edge of the can. As is evident, with tlus construction, the cover can be locked to the can by rotation in either direction. In other words, the lock lugs 9 may be engaged with the lock notches 11 in either edge of the cooperating brackets or straps 10. This will be found to be a very convenient construction. Preferably, also, the brackets or straps 1.0 are bowed outward to afford seats for ringlike handles 12.
The improved can above described has, in practice, been found highly efficient for the urposes had in view. The cover, When ocked, cannot be removed by dogs and, furthermore, the cover will not come off even if the can is tipped over. Also, the can is of simple construction and may be cheaply made.
What I claim is:
The combination with a can having lock brackets at diametrically opposite points, said brackets having lock notches in both edges, of a can cover, and a rigid metal strap secured to the top of said cover and provided withv downwardly and outwardly extended ends, which ends afford lock lugs that are engageable with the lock notches of said brackets, the intermediate portion of said strap being bowed upward to afford a handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISADORE GLUCKMAN.
