Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Hninnion Knnnnnnn, a subject of the King of Prussia, and residing at No. 13 Ottostrasse, in the city of l rankfort-on-the-Main, Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented an Improvement in Short-Cylinder Hide- .lreating hflachines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a machine for treating hides, skins and leather, which is especially adapted among other uses to be employed for iieshing and like operations.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient machine for the purpose specified in which a rotatable working tool is employed, which is of such length as to be capable of acting upon only a portion of the width of the hide or skin at one time, and which is moved. axially by power into different working positions with relation to the work support and the work thereon, whereby some portions of the hide or skin may be worked more than other portions, if desired. To this end, the machine is provided with power-operated means for moving the work-support, and for moving the working tool axially thereof, which means are independently controllable by a single operator from one side or end of the machine, so that a maximum out-put of the machine may be obtained with a single operator.
The invention further has for its object to provide novel means as will be described for effecting the axial movement of the rotatable tool.
These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

In the present instance, the invention is shown as embodied in a machine having a rotatable work-support in the form of a segmental drum (1,, upon the periphery of which the hide or skin is supported while it is being treated or worked upon by a rotatable tool, usually a bladed cylinder or roll I), which will be hereinafter referred to as the short cylinder, inasmuch as it is materially shorter than the length of the drum (1/. The drum (1 provided on its periphery with the usual yielding bolster c, is fast on a shaft cl, and has cooperating with it the usual clamping jaw or bar (5 carried by the arms f loose on the drum shaft d; The clamping jaw c cooperates with a fixed jaw 7a carried. by the drum a, to grip the hide or skin (not shown) and said movable jaw is held in its closed position by springs i, having one end secured to the said jaw and the other end "to the drum. The drum a as herein shown has imparted to it an oscillatory motion, which is effected in the present instance by mechanism comprising a gear 10 (see Fig. 1) fast on the drum shaft, meshing with and driven by a pinion (not shown) on a shaft 12 having a gear 13, which meshes with a pinion 14 on a shaft 15, provided with normally loose pulleys 16, 17 which are adapted to be rendered fast on the shalt by a clutch of any suitable construction, andherein shown as a sleeve 18 provided with cones 19, 20, which cooperate with lingers 21., 22, carried by the pulleys 16, 17, said cone sleeve being provided with an annular groove 23, which is engaged by a forked. arm 24 on a rock-shaft 25 provided with an arm 26, forming a handle by which the clutch is operated. When the clutch member or sleeve 1.8 is moved. into engagement with the finger 21, the pulley 16 is rendered. fast on the shaft 15, and when said sleeve is engaged with the finger 22, the pulley 17 is rendered fast on the said shaft. The pulley 16 is connected by a straight belt 28 with a pulley 29 fast on a counter shaft 30 supported by the framework of the machine, andv the pulley 17 is connected by a cross belt 31 with a pulley 32 fast on the counter shaft 30, which is provided with. a fast pulley 32:3 and with a loose pulley 34, which are operatively connected by a belt 35 with a driving pulley 36, only a portion of which is shown in Fig. 3.
The drum (0 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow 37 in Fig. 3, so as to carry the hide or skin clamped thereto under the bladed. cylinder or operative tool I), when the clutch sleeve 18 is moved so as to render the pulley 16 fast on the shaft 15, and said drum is rotated in the reverse direction when the clutch sleeve 18 is moved so as to render the pulley 17 fast on the said shaft. As the drum to is rotated in the direction of the arrow 37, F 3, the bladed cylinder 6 is brought into engagement with the hide or skin on the drum, by the operator depressing a foot treadle 40, which is secured to cranks 4.1 on a rock-shaft 42 located at the front of the machine and provided with cranks or auns 43, which are joined by links or connecting rods 44 to a swinging frame in which the shaft 45 for the bladed cylinder l) is ournaled. The swinging frame comprises in the present instance two levers or arms 50, 51, (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3), which are pivoted on a rod or shaft 52 supported by the framework of the machine. The shaft 45 is designed to be rotated continuously while the machine is being used and is separately driven by a belt 53, passed about a pulley 54 on the shaft 45 and about a pulley 55 on the shaft 30.
The short cylinder 6 is mounted on the shaft 45 and is secured thereto by a key 56 (see Fig. 3) slidable in a longitudinal way or slot 57 (see Fig. 2) in the shaft 45, so that said cylinder rotates with said shaft and is capable of movement longitudinally or axi ally thereon. Provision is made for moving the short cylinder 6 axially with relation to the drum by power-operated means, and for enabling the workman who operates the foot treadle 10 and clutch lever 26 to control said power-operated means. In the present instance, the power-operated means for axially moving the short cylinder 1) comprises an endless chain or carrier 60 (see Figs. 2 and 4), which extends parallel with the shaft 45 above the drum a, and is passed about sprocket wheels 61, 62, located near the opposite ends of the machine. The sprocket wheel 61 is mounted to turn loosely on the swing arm 50, and the other sprocket wheel 62 is fast on a shaft 63 having bearings in a frame 64, which is suitably secured to the framework of the machine. The endless carrier or chain 60 is arranged. in a substantially vertical plane and is designed to be driven continuously in one direction, which is effected as shown by a bevel gear 65 on the shaft 63, meshing with a pinion 66 on a shaft 67 provided with a pulley 68, which is driven by a belt 69 from a pulley 70 on the shaft 30. (See Fig. 3.)
Between the upper and lower parts of the endless chain 60 is located a clamping device, which is carried by the frame in which the bladed cylinder is supported in its axial movement.
The cylinder-supporting frame comprises as herein shown (see Figs. 2, 3 and 5) two side bars 72, 7 3 connected at their front end by the cross bar 7 1 and at their rear end by a frame consisting of two parallel bars 75, 76, joined by tie bars 77, and hangers or bearing disks 78, which are secured to the side bars 72, 73, and engage the journals 79 of the l I l l l short cylinder (3. Between the parallel bars 75, 76 are located the clamping bars 80, 81, which are pivotally connected at their ends to cranks S2, on rock-shafts 84., 85, journaled at one end in lugs 86, 87 on the side bars 72, 7 3, and at their other end in the cross bar 7%. The rock- shafts S 1, 85 have secured to their front ends depending cranks or arms 88, 89, which are joined by a cross bar 90 forming a handle for the operator to rock the shafts 84, S5, and work the clamping mechanism as will be described. The clamping bars 80, 81, are also interposed between the upper and lower halves of the endless chain or carrier 60 and normally are disengaged therefrom, but are adapted to engage said chain and clamp it between one or the other of the clamping bars and the parallel bar of the cylinder-supporting frame with which it cooperates. By reference to Fig. 4-, it will be seen that if the operator moves the handle or cross bar 90 in the direction indicated by the arrow 91, the rock- shafts 84, 85 are turned so as to lift the clamping bar and force the upper half of the endless chain 60 against the upper bar 75, thereby firmly clamping the cylinder supporting frame to the endless carrier 60, with the result that the said frame and the short cylinder are moved by power in one direction axially of the drum a and into position to have the said cylinder act upon a fresh or untreated portion of the hide or skin. hen the short cylinder has been properly positioned with relation to the work, the operator moves the handle 90 back into its starting or normal position indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 4, with the result that the clamping bar 80 releases the upper half of the endless carrier and the short cylinder has a practically fixed relation to the shaft 15 and drum a. In the manner just described, the short cylinder 7) is moved axially with relation to the drum, until the entire surface of the hide or skin 011 the drum has been fleshed, or otherwise treated. The cylinder 7) may be returned to its starting position by the operator moving the handle 90 in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow 91, so as to rock the shafts 84, and cause the lower clamping bar 81 to press the lower half of the endless carrier against the lower bar 76 and thus firmly clamp the cylinder-supporting frame to the lower half of the endless carrier, which moves the said frame and its cylinder in the direction opposite to that indi cated by the arrow 91 or toward the right hand end of the machine (viewing Fig. 1) and when the bladed cylinder has reached the position desired by the operator, the handle is moved back shown in Fig. 4:, and the cylinder-carrying frame is released or unclamped from the end less carrier.
Provision is made for facilitating the axial movement of the bladed cylinder and this is to its normal position i ill) accomplished as herein. shown, by extending rearwardly from the cylinder-carrying frame, rods or arms 95 having wheels or rollers 96, which run on the pivot rod 52, and adjustably secure counter-weights 97 t said rods or arms by the set screws 99 or otherwise.
T he operation of the machine herein shown may be briefly described Assume the drum a to be at rest and in its starting position shown in Fig. The operator throws one-half of the hide or skin to be treated into the drum between the jaws c, 71. He then moves the clutch handle 26 to the right into the position indicated by the dotted line 100, which action connects the shaft 15 with the pulley 16, and the drum (L is started in what may be termed its lorward rotation or movement in the direction indicated by the arrow 37 (see Fig. 3). The drum or on its forward movement picks up the clamping jaw e and carries it with it, thereby firmly cl amping the hide or skin between the ewe e, h. At or about the time the drum a has been moved su'lhciently to bring the portion of the skin gripped between the jaws c, it below the short cylinder or operating roll I), the operator depresses the foot treadle a0 and lowers the short oylinder 1) into engagement with the hide or skin on the periphery of the drum (.1 and maintains the said cylinder in ei'igagement with the hide or skin until the latter has been carried beyond and out of engagen'ient with the same, after which the operator removes the pressure upon the foot treadle and reverses the clutch lever so to clutch the pulley 17 to the sh ajl't 1-5 and reverse the rotary movement of the drum. On the reverse movement of the drum, the movable jaw c engages the stops 7i? and is arrested thereby, while the drum continues its reverse movement until the clamping jaws are wide open, whereupon the clutch is moved to its central position and the drum stopped in its starting position. If the short cylinder is in the center ol? the machine as represented in Fig. 1, the opera tor moves the handle 90 so as to clamp the c 'linder frame to the endless carrier 60, which moves it axially into a new working position, and when properly positioned, the handle 90 is moved back to its normal post tion to unclainp the cylinder frame. The workman again throws the clutch 'meinb er 18 into engagement with the pulley l6 and de presses the loot treadle above described. The operations above described are repeated until the entire surface of the hide or skin has been treated.
It will be observed that when the cylinder frame is unclamped from the endless carrier, the cylinder remains in a practically fixed position with relation to the drum and the work thereon, until the said cylinder is moved into a new position as above described. It will also be seen that the same as follows I l l l l l l l portion of the hide or skin can be treated one or more times, which is an advantage, as the thicker parts of the hide or skin can. be worked over two or more times while the thinner portions need be worked over only once it so desired. It will also be observed, that only one operator is required to work the machine, and that the clutch mechanism for controlling the rotation of the work-support or drum, the loot treadle for bringing the short cylinder into contact with the work, and the handle i' or clampin g the cylinder frame to the endless carrier, are all accessible l'roin one side or part of the machine, prelerably the front side as herein shown, which enables a single operator to perform a maximum amount of work with the machine in the least possible time. It will further be observed, that the rotation of the drum is ei'l ected by mechanism independently of the rotation of the mechanism for rotating the short cylinder, and independently of the poweroperated mechanism, which effects the longitudinal or axial movement of said cylinder When the pressure of the foot is removed from the treadlo ll), the short cylinder 1) may be raised into its elevated or inoperative position, by counterweights 101 on rods or arms 1.02 extended rearwrn'dly from the cranks 43 and only one of which is shown in l 3.
I have herein shown the invention as einbodied in one form of machine, but I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect.
Claims.
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work support, means to clamp the work thereon, a tool roller cooperating with the said work support and arranged to present its periphery to the work on said support, power-operated means to rotate said tool roller, power operated means to axially move said tool roller and controllable independently of the power operated means for rotating said tool roller to enable the same portion of the work on said support to be subjected to the action of the tool roller one or more times at the will ol. the operator, and means accessible to the operator from one side or part of the machine for controlling said power operated means, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable work support, power-operated means for rotating," said work support, a power-operated rotatable bladed cylinder or roll axially movable into different working positions with relation to said worksupport, means operated by power independently of said cylinder or roll to etlect axial movement of said cylinder or roll and to permit the latter to be left in any desired working position without interfering with the rotation of said cylinder or roll, and means accessible to the operator from one side or part of the machine for controlling said power-operated means, substantially as described 3. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable work -support, poweroperated means for rotating said work-support, a rotatable working tool. cooperating with said Work-support, means to rotate said tool, power-operated means for effecting bodily movement of said tool across the work-support, means for controlling said bodily movement without interfering with the rotary movement thereof, means for controlling the power-operated means for retating said work support, both of said controlling means being accessible to the operator from one side or part of the machine, substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable work support, power-operated means for rotating the same, a rotatable operating cylinder or roll cooperatin with the rotatable work-support and movable axially with relation to the same, power-operated means for effecting said axial movement of the operating cylinder, and means accessible to the operator from one side or part of the machine for controlling said power-operated means, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable segmental drum, a clamping jaw cooperating therewith to clamp a hide or skin thereon, power-operated means for rotating said drum, a rotatable bladed cylinder or roll axially movable with relation to said. drum, a shaft upon which said cylinder is mounted to rotate therewith and to move axially thereon, a frame movable with said cylinder or roll in its axial movement, an endless carrier ex tended in the direction of the length of said drum, and means to clamp said frame to said endless carrier, substantially as described.
6. In a machine of "the class described, in combination, a work-support, a rotatable working tool cooperating with said worle support, means to rotate said tool, an end less carrier extended across said work-support, and means for detachably connecting said rotatable tool with said endless carrier to effect axial movement of said tool without interfering with its rotary movement, substantially as described.
7. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work-support, a rotatable Working tool cooperating with said worksupport, means to rotate said tool, an endless carrier extended across said work-support, and means for connecting said rotatable tool witn said endless carrier to effect axial movement of said tool without interfering with its rotary movement, substantially as described.
8. In a machine of the class described, in
combination, a work-support, a rotatable shaft arranged substantially parallel therewith, a bladed cylinder or roll mounted on said shaft to rotate therewith and to move axially thereon, a support for said shaft movable toward and from said work-support, a fame carrying said roll and movable axially of said shaft, an endless carrier, power-operated means to move it, and I means to clampsaid frame to said endless carrier, substantiallyas described. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work-support, a rotatable l shaft arranged substantially parallel therewith, a working tool mounted on said shaft to rotate therewith and to move axially l l support for said shaft, a l foot treadlc connected with said pivoted sup- ,l port, a support for said working tool in its [axial movement on said shaft, an endless l I l l thereon, pivotec carrier, clamping means for connecting said support with said endless carrier, rock-shafts to operate said clamping means, and. means accessible to the operator while depressing j the said foot treadle for operating said rockshafts, substantially as described. l 10. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a worlesupport, a rotatable shaft arranged substantially parallel therewith, a working tool mounted on said shaft to rotate therewith and to move axially thereon, a pivoted support for said shaft, a foot treadlc connected with said pivoted l support, a support for said working tool in 1 its axial movement on said shaft, an endless carrier, clamping means for connecting said support with said endless carrier, and means accessible to the operator while depressing l the said foot treadle for operating said I clamping means, substantially as described. 1 11. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a worlesupport, a rotatable tool cooperating therewith, means to rotate it, an endless carrier extended substantially parallel with said work support, and means to connect said rotatable tool with said endless carrier, substantially as described.
12. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a work-support, a rotatable tool cooperating therewith, means to rotate it, an endless carrier extended substantially parallel with said work-support, clamping 1 means interposed between the halves or parts of the endless carrier, and means to I engage said clamping means with said end- I l l l l l l less carrier to effect bodily movement of the rotatable tool in opposite directions, substantially as described.
13. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable work support, poweroperated means for eflecting rotation of the same in opposite directions, means for controlling said power-operated means, a rotatable worlnng-tool cooperating l with said work-support, a support for said tool movable toward and from said Worksupport, means under control of the operator for moving said tool support toward said Work-support, bodily moving said tool across said work support, means for controlling the bodily movement of said tool, the controlling means for the )oWer-operated means being accessible to t 1e operator from the same side of the machine as is the means for moving the tool support toward the work support, for the purpose specified.
14. In a machine of the class described, in combmation, a work-support, a rotatable 15 shaft substantially parallel therewith, a rotapoWer-operated means for l movement,
table working tool secured to said shaft to rotate therewith and to move axially thereon, a frame to support said tool in its axial an endless carrier extended across said worlcsupport substantially parallel therewith, and means for connecting said tool supporting frame with said endless carrier, for the purpose specified.
