VALVE-LOCKING DEVICE FOR THE OVEN-BURNERS OF GAS-STOVES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, An'rmvn C. Porn and IIENRY KAHL, both citizens of the United States, residing at New Albany, Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valve-Locking Devices for the Oven-Burners ol' Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, relerence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gas stove provided with a valve-locking device constructed in accordance with our invention, and shows said device in operative position for locking the valves of the oven burners; and Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig- 1, showing the locking device in an inoperative position.
This invention relates to gas stoves and ranges.
The main object 01" our invention is to pro vide a device that will effectively lock the gas valves for the oven burners of a stove when the oven door is closed and thus prevent said valves from being turned on without first opening the oven door.
7 Another object of our invention is to provide a device tor the purpose described that can be used on gas stoves which are provided with either needle valves or two-way valves or gas cocks. And still another object of our invention is to provide a locking device that prevents the oven burner valves or cocks from being turned either on or oil' when the oven door is closed.
Other objects and desirable features of our invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Patents have been granted on devices for locking the oven burner valves of gas stoves but the devices covered by said patents have not proved entirely satisfactory and therefore have not been used extensively. ()ne of said patented devices comprises a sliding bar provided with spring arms which are adapted to engage the levers on the stems of the oven burner valves when the oven door is closed. said bar being moved in one direction into an operative position by the oven door and in the opposite direction into an inoperative position by means of an expansion spring.

1 the construction just described is that the gas cocks or valves can be turned to cut oil the supply 01' gas when the oven door is closed so that it does not absolutely revent the gas cocks from being tampere with. Another objectionable feature of said construction is that the spring arms on the sliding bar are apt to engage the levers ol' the gas cocks when the oven door is being closed and thus accidentally turn on the supply of gas to the oven burners. And still another objectionable feature of said patented device is that the spring arms on the sliding bar ol'ten stick or catch on the levers of the as cocks and thus prevent the actuating spring from moving said bar into an inoperative position to release the gas cocks.
Our improved device overcomes all of the objectionable teatures above referred to and can. also be used for locking either needle valves or two-way valves or gas cooks for the the operating devices on the stems of the valves.
Briefly described, our improved device consists of a movable member that is adapted to project over the levers or controlling devices of the oven valves when the oven door of the stove is closed, and means for moving said member into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened. Means is also rovided for preventing said member from lieing raised when the oven door is closed, and means is provided for locking the valves in an open position.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of our invention, 1 designates the levers on the stems of the gas cocks or valves for the oven burners f a stove. and 2 designates a member that is adapted to pro'ect over said levers when the oven door I; of the stove is closed. The member 2 is prelcrablv pivotally connected at 4 to lugs 5 on the side of the stove and is provided with a depending Ilange 2*, thus forming a hood which projects over the operating devices tor the gas valves and prevents them from being tampered with. The oscillating shalt 6 to which the oven door 3 is connected is provided with an arm 7 that engages the hood or locking member 2 and moves it u )wardly into an inoperative position when he oven door is opened.
In the construction herein shown the arm locking member does not positively engage 7 is provided with a lug 8 that projects over the end ortion of the hood 2 and an inclined face 9 tiat engages the underneath side of the hood 2. When the oven door is opened said inclined face 9 engages the hood and raises it into the position shown in Fig. .2, and when the oven door bein closed the hood 3 will be moved downwardly into its operative position, as shown in Fig. 1, by the lug s on the arm 7. The main function which this lug 8 performs, however, is to prevent the hood 2 from being raised when the oven door is closed for force of gravity would carry the hood downwardly into its operative position even if the arm 7 were not provided with a lug 8.
The depending llange 2 a on the hood is provided with notches 10 that receive the levers l of the gas valves when said valves are turned on and thus lock the valves in an open position. These notches are preferably of such dimensions that the levers 1 can be turned slightly to reduce the low of gas but not far enough to cut otl' the supply of to the oven burnels. The only way that the supply oi to the oven burners can be cut off so as to extinguish the [lame is to open the oven door and thus raise the hood 2 far enough to carry the notches 10 in the flange of the hood out of engagement with the levers 1. There is no possibility of the locking member sticking or catching on the levers ol' the gas valves when the oven door is being opened and thus tailing to release said valves, for the hood does not engage or contact with the levers l. The hood 2 merely extends over said levers when the oven door is closed and as it is raised by a member 7 that is rigidly connected to the oven door said hood cannot fail to move into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened.
One great advantage of our improved locking device is that it can be used on a stove provided with needle valves; namely, valves whose stems. are provided with knobs or handles that are rotated to open and close the valve, or it can be used on cocks or two-way valves for the locking of the valves is effected by a member that merely extends over the operating devices for the valves and does not positively engage said devices. The device presents a neat and ornamental appearance, 1tcan be manufactured at a low cost and it can housed on practically any type of gas stove or range that is now in general use.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is:
1. A device for locking the oven burner valves of a gas stove, comprising a member that is permanently connected to the stove and which is adapted to project over the operating devices of said valves, and means on said member for preventing said operating devices from being turnedso as to cut oil the supply of gas to the oven burners when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.

3. 4. A gas stove provided with valves for Controlling the supply of gas to the. oven burners of a stove, a pivotally mounted hood-shaped member that is adapted to project over the operating devices for said valves when the oven door is closed so as to cover said devices and prevent them from being manipulated, and means for causing said member to move automatically into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened; substantially as described.
5. A gas stove provided with valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners of a stove, and means for locking said valves in a closed position when the oven door is closed, said means also being adapted to lock the valves in an opened position when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
6. A gas stove provided with valves for controlling the supplyot' gas to the oven burners, means for locking the gas valves in an open position, and means controlled by the oven door for preventing said locking means from being moved into an inoperative position while the oven door is closed; substant-ially as described.
7. A gas stove provided With valves for controlling the su ply of gas to the oven burners, a pivotally mounted hood-shaped member permanently connected to the stove and adapted to project over the operating devices for said valves when the oven door is closed and thus lock the valves in closed position, means for automatically moving said member into an inoperative position when the oven door of the stove is opened, and means for preventing said member from being moved into an inoperative position when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
8. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, an approximately hoodshaped member" that is adapted to project over the operating devices for said valves when the oven door is closed. and means for automatically moving said member into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened; substantially as described.
9. A gas stove provided with an oven door. valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, an approximately hoodshaped member that. is adapted to project over the operating devices for said valves when the oven door is closed, means controlled by the oven door of the stove for moving said melnber into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened. and means for locking said member in an operative position when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
10. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, and means controlled by the oven door for preventing said valves from being manipulated to cut off the supply of gas when the oven door is closed substantially as described.
11. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, a locking member ada ted to project over the operating devices or said valves to hold the valves closed, and means i or lockin the valves in an open position; substantially as described.
12. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, a pivotally mounted member that is adapted to reject over the operating devices for said va ivcs, and means moved by the oven door for engaging said member and moviiu it into an inoperative position; substantially as described.
13. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to theoven burners, a pivotally mounted de vice, for locking said valves, a device connected to the oven door for engaging said member and moving it into an inoperative position, and means on said device for preventing said member from being moved into an inoperative position when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
14. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, a movable member for locking said valves, and an arm connected to the oven door for engaging said locking member and moving it into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened; substantially as described.
15. A gas stove provided with an oven door. valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, a movable member for locking said valves, an arm connected to the oven door for engaging said locking member and moving it into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened, and means on said arm which prevent said locking member from being moved into an inoperative position when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
16. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners. a pivotally mounted locking member provided with a depending flange which is adapted to )rojcct over the operating devices for the vaives so as to prevent them from being manipulated, and an arm connected to the oven door for preventing said locking member from being raised when the oven door is closed and for moving said locking member into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened; substantially as described.
17. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners. a )ivotally mounted locking member provided with a depending flange which is adapted to )roject over the operating devices for the val ves so as to prevent them from being manipulated, an arm connected to the oven door forpreve'nting said locking member from being raised when the oven door is closed and for moving said locking member into an inoperative position when the oven door is opened, and notches in the depending flange of said locking member for engaging the operating devices for' the valves so as to lock the valves in an open position; substantially as described.
18. A gas stove provided with an oven door, valves for controlling the supply of gas to the oven burners, an approximately hoodshaped member pivotally connected to the side of the stove and adapted to roject over the operating devices for said va ves, an arm connected to a rock shaft to which the oven door is secured for engaging said member and raising it when the oven door is opened, and a lug on said arm which projects over said member and prevents it from being raised when the oven door is closed; substantially as described.
19. A gas stove provided with a valve for controlling the supply of gas to an oven burner. a pivotally mounted a proximately hood-shaped member that is a apted to project over the operating device for said valve when the oven door is closed, and means for causing said member to move automatically when the oven door is operated; substantially as described.
