Be it known that I, EDWARD P. Conn, a citizen'of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Looks for Oven Burners, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention has reference more particularly to a Safety lock for oven burners and seeks to provide a simple construction arranged to prevent the opening of the supply valve and the admission of gas to the oven burner unless the door of the oven has been previously opened.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a locking device operating with the gas supply valve and engaged by-the door when the latter. is in a closedposition so as to prevent operation of the valve and necessitating openingof the door before the valve can be moved from the closed position; to provide a valve. locking-device which interlocks with the door'to hold the valve closed and which 1' is entirely disengaged from the door in the open positions of the valve, to provide a valve locking device which is moved to the released position upon a slight opening movement of the valve and having a limited movement there after, so that the valve has a large range of adjustment, from a slight open position to a clear open position, without material operation of the locking device or danger of the locking device becoming re-engaged with the door, to provide a locking device adapted to interlock with the marginal edge of the door and wherein such marginal edge serves to guide the locking device to the locking position; and, in general, to provide an improved locking device for the valve of an oven burner which interlocks with the door, and is of simple form and adapted.

The stoveor range 1 has an oven 2pr0-' vided with a door 3 that is pivoted at its lower edge in a 'pairof lugs 4. A gas supply pipe 5' communicates through 'a valve 6 with the burner 7 in the bottom of the oven for heating the latter. A valve operatmg stem 8 extends outwardly through a side bracket 9, has a shoulder 10 journaled in the bracket and a handle 11 at itsouter end. The bracket 9 forms in effect an extension of the front wall of the stove.-' v
A locking dog ,12 is pivoted adjacent the axis of-the stem 8.0n a stud 13which pro jects outwardly from the bracket 9 and the outer end of this dog is arranged to engage a notch 14 in the beveled or rounded edge of the oven door 3., This notch forms an abrupt shoulder. thatmis adapted to abut against the end of the dog and prevent inthe closed and locked position of "the 7 valve, 6 fits in a notch'16 in the outer" end ofthe dog 12 and lies alongside and in reverse position to a finger 17 with which the dog is provided at one side of the notch. At the other side of this notch is' a short finger18 for preventing the finger 15 from passing out of the notch'at that, side.- 1

It is desirable that the-valve G'may have a large range of adjustment from the point n whi h it is. nearly cl sed to the fully op position without engaging the locking dog 12 with the door. In the closed and locked positions of the valve, the cooperating fingers-15 and 1.7 are substantially parallel and V angles to'the finger 17 and merely slides along its surface. In other words, the initial movement of the valve effects an accelerated movement of the dog and thereafter 7 7 effects a retarded movement.
. The locking mechanism is enclosed by a cover plate 19 whichis secured in position by bolts20, or in any other suitable manner, and through which the outer end of the valv e' stem 8 extends. An inturned 'flange21 about the edges of the plate holds the latter away from the outer faces of the stove and of the bracket 9,-and this flange is cutaway adjacent the oven door '3, so
that the endof the d0g'12 projects beyond the cover plateand has the necessary freedom ofmovement.
In returning the valveto off-position, the finger 15 at the end of the valve closing movement actson the finger 18 and movesthe, do-g 12 to the lockingposition. If this occurs when the door is closed, the end of the dog must yield insome manner and ride over the edge of the "door into the notch 14. In the present construction this is accom-. plished by'counter-sinking the aperture 22 of'the dog in which'the pivot stud 13 is engaged so that a limited rocking movement of the end of the dog to and from the wall of the stove is permitted. The cover-plate 19 whichserves to hold the dog in position onv the stud 13 is spaced so as to permit this movement, and the outer end of the dog ha's'a rounded cam surface on the underside, as indicated at 23, so that as the valve handle 11 is thrownwto the closed position and the'dog 12 swung on its pivot stud 13, the end of the dog engages the beveled or rounded edge of the door 3 and rides up over the edge until it reaches a point where it may drop into the notch 1 1 From the foregoing, it will be observed :that I have .ihrovided' a simple locking de vice for the supply valve of the oven burner,
which prevents opening: the valve when the doori's closed and. which is entirely disengaged from the door and offers no inter- I ferenceto the operation of the latter when the'gas supply valve has been preliminarily opened; that the locking device is so shifted upon a very slight preliminary movement of the valve handle, that a large range ofadjustment of the valve fromthe fully'open position to a nearly closed position is permitted without danger of re-engagement of the locking device; that the improved construction may be readily applied to existing types of ranges without material change or alteration, and requires only a few parts, which may be readily assembled, to afford a substantial and satisfactory valve locking device.
Obviously changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined by the appended claims. I
I claim as my invention:
1. 5. In a stove, the combination of an oven having a door, a burner for heating the oven, a valve for controlling the burner, a locking dog operable with the valve and engaging the door in the closed position for holding the valve in the closed position, said door having a notch in its edge to receive the dog and having means for deflecting the dog from its normal path of movement to'admit the latter into the notch.
6. In a stove, the combination of an oven, a wall at one side of the oven having an opening therethrough to afford access to the oven, a door closing the opening, a burner for heating the compartment, a valve for controlling the burner and having an operating handle projecting through the wall, and a locking device pivotaly mounted on the outer face of the wall to swing in a path substantiall parallel to the plane of the door opening and adapted to interlock with the edge of the door and said valve handle to prevent the opening movement of the valve when the door is closed.
7. In a stove, the combination with an oven, a door therefor, a burner for heating the oven and a supply valve for said burner, of a locking dog arranged to be shifted by said valve as the latter is opened and closed, said door having a notch arranged, in'the closed position of the door, to receive the end of said dog and thereby lock the valve in closed position, and said door having a beveled edge arranged, as the valve is closed, to deflect the dog from its normal path of movement to admit the latter in said notch.
8. In a stove, the combination with an oven, a door therefor, a burner for heating the oven and a supply valve for the burner, of a pivoted locking dog and a pivoted valve stem having co-operating lugs arranged substantially in line between the pivotal axes thereof when the valve is closed, and substantially at right angles to each other when the valve is open, said dog beingarranged to interlock with the oven door when the latter and said valve are closed to prevent the opening movement of the valve, and said lugs co-operating to shift said dog clear of the door upon the initial opening movement of the valve and re-engage the same therewith upon its final closing movement Chicago, Illinois, July 22nd 1920.
