My invention relates to machiner r' designed to street a separation oi iron and other metals capable of magnetic influence from a body of other material, and the ohject oi the invention is to provide an apparatus of hu capacity and one in which the sopa ition of ore can thoroughly and rapidly performed.
The invention consists generally in various constructions an d combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a tical sectional view of an ore separating machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the construction of one of the circuit closing rings.

A wheel 13 is mounted on a shaft i l and supported in a vertical plane with a portion depending within the solution in the tank. This wheel is arranged to revolve slowly and is divided into a series of sections 15. l have shown 8 of these sections laut a greater or less number may be employed, it preferred. in each section I arrange a series oi electro-magnets 1.6 having their polo pieces projecting beyond the periphery oi the wheel, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Upon the shaft 14 I arrange a series o'l rings 17 insulated from one another and from Specification of Letters Patent.

Vith this arrangement it is evident that during a predetermined period in the revolution of the wheel 13 the circuit will he closed through the clectro-nragnets of each section and their pole pieces energized, and during another period in the revolution oi the wheel the circuit will be broken through the electromagnots and their polo pieces dcncrgizod. The rings 17 are so arranged that tho magnets will he energized when they are passing through the solution in the tank and will he denergivzed when they roach a point where the material collected on the pole pieces through magnetic attraction will, when ro lievcd, l all upon the inclined plate 25 and he conducted to a suitable receptacle. A brush '26 is arranged abov said plate and adapted to contact with tho pole pieces and sweep oll any particles of iron or other metal adhoriir' thereto. The groups ol' magnets are arranged in water-tight compartments in the sections 15 of the ring, their polo pieces only being exposed to attract the ore and separate it .trom the solution in the tank.
In the operation of tho machine tho tank is filled withwater to a point near the top and a quantity oi iinely ground ore introduced. The agitator is set in motion and air under pressure being discharged through the holes 7 will cause a violent agitation of the water and the pa 'ticles of ore to he held in suspension. The wheel 15 is now set in motion and an electric current turned on. As each group of clcctro-magnets passes through the solution a quantity of iron will adhere to the magnets and he carried out of the tank. Upon reaching a predc' ermiuod point the circuit will be broken through the magnets, their pole pieces demagnctized and the greater portion of the iron will fall upon the inclined plate L5. The revolving brush keeps the pole pieces clean, and upon reaching a point Where the magnets can enter the solution the circuit will be closed therethrough, the ore will collect on the pole pieces and the process n'niy be repeatefl as long 1as any iron remains in the solution.
